If Arcadia is to survive, we should learn to get involved. Show interest in athletic, artistic, and academic events. Show your support for your school by showing a little enthusiasm. Get INVOLVED!!

By definition, morality is being in accord with the principles of proper conduct. More specifically, sexual conduct. When viewed this way, the word "moral" doesn't seem to be in the average teenager's vocabulary. Why have the standards of today's young adults dropped to an all time low?

These days virgins are an endangered species. A loss of virginity used to be the exception; now it seems to be the rule. This often stems from peer pressure.

Speaking from the female point of view, an awful lot is expected of the girl, even on a first date. A lot of guys are obsessed with the need to be more experienced than their friends. This type of guy does not care what he has to do or who he has to hurt along the way to get to the top and stay there. To him, it's just a game.

The guy is not at fault in every situation. The slack-off in girls' values is also very apparent. There are girls who don't care one way or the other about morals. This could be caused by the fact that they don't have a very good self image. Another cause of this insecurity could be the fact that a girl is a virgin and all of her friends aren't. A girl may feel self conscious about her lack of sexual experience.

The 80's has proven to be a difficult decade in which to be a teenager. When there is pressure mounting from all sides, it may seem easier to give in to it. But don't compromise your values for something your friends consider normal. Make your own decisions. Wait until you are ready to handle the situation as a commitment, not as a game.

Arcadians abandon their "Kids" Late last night my doorbell

rang. When I got to the door there was no one there, but I caught a glimpse of a little girl dashing down the street. On the doorstep was a basket.

"Please take care of my baby. The pressures are too heavy for me and I can't take it any longer," read the note.

I picked up the blanket halfway and discovered, to my horror, a Cabbage Patch Doll! The little girl that I saw running down the street must have been the mother.

Well, the girl was gone, now what? Should I take the doll in myself, find it another home, leave it on the neighbor's doorstep or leave it outside to fend for itself?

I was tempted to just leave it out there. Then her red pigtails and freckled face caught my eye. I picked her up and took her inside. What the heck? We don't need anymore juvenile delinquents.

I changed her clothes, fed her some milk and put her to bed. I'd find her another home in the morning.

As I was rocking her to sleep, looking into her blue eyes, I realized how incredibly ugly she was. I decided it wasn't the little girl's fault for leaving her here. I understood the pressures she was referring to. She was referring to the burdens of having an ugly baby. Nobody in their right mind wants an ugly baby.

AJI of a sudden the grotesqueness of the child overtook me. I wrapped her up, put her in her basket, crept outside, slid the basket on the neighbor's doorstep, rang the doorbell, and stepped around the corner of the house.

As I stood there, glued up against the wall, waiting for someone to answer the door, I realized my human indecency. What am I doing? I'm aban-

doning a child. Just because someone else abandoned it before I did gave me no reason to act on this sort of 'Sick behavior. What was I thinking? What is becoming of me? What is the world coming to? I have to say, with this kind of goings on, I am ashamed to be an American.

What if word got to the Russians that all our children were abandoning their Cabbage Patch Kids? They would probably realize that the United States of America was giving up, falling apart. They'd notice that the nation as a whole was becoming weaker and weaker. They would probably issue an attack and the US of A would be no more.

I peeked around the corner. No one had come out yet. Quickly, I picked up the baby and her basket, took it home and let her sleep with me.

Student of the Month

The amazing lIsa Hohn was voted by the Arcadian as Student of the Month, and I mean AMAZING. When I first approached lIsa about her interview for Student of the Month I thought I knew a lot about her. It turns out (excuse the cliche) I was only at the tip of the iceberg. lIsa has been involved with everything from Interact to learning to fly airplanes.

To start off with, as a freshman she was in A.F.S., X-country, was the freshman V.P. In her Sophomore year she was President of her class, a member of Interact and Latin Club, and attended

Any town , and was on J.V. cheer. She was also a volunteer at St. Joseph's Hospital in the Labor, Delivery and Pulmonary care units. Now in her Junior year, lIsa Hohn is again President of her class . She had done volunteer city work and she has worked for the Phoenix Symphony.

As far as hobbies go, lIsa loves to ski. It is one of her favorite sports along with scuba diving and deep sea fishing. lIsa also hopes to get her pilots license by this summer. When I asked lIsa if she wanted to say anything to Arcadia she replied, "I am so proud of the class of '86!"

lIsa has been working very hard to organize this years T.W.I.R.P. and Homecoming to make it the best Arcadia has ever seen. After working three years as an Arcadian leader, lIsa is going to take a deservedly fun vacation . in Europe this summer.

As a closing, at the Arcadian we have concluded that Arcadia is lucky to have lIsa. I say we all stand up and give lIsa Hohn a round of applause. She is a faithful leader who has made many sacrifices for Arcadia.

lisa, we're really proud to have you at Arcadia!

She also attended Washington University with a Masters in Secondary Education. She enjoys teaching biology as well as physical science. She also likes to combine science with outdoor education.

Mrs. Kubida used to teach junior high students and the biggest change with teaching high school is the realization that high school students are so much closer to college and jobs. "All of their courses are for graduation credits so their academic record is so much more important to them than it is to junior high

students", she said. "Also, the good and bad habits developed these four years are so much more critical to success in their jobs or college careers."

She enjoys teaching here, and enjoys the students and staff. She says, "The students here are very cooperative and friendly, and the staff has been extremely receptive and supportive." She is very impressed by the enthusiastic involvement with the academics and activities at Arcadia.

Mrs. Kubida said she was flattered to be chosen "Teacher of the Month." Congratulations! We hope you are enjoying teaching at Arcadia.

The Word This month we asked several students what they would do if

they found an ecchymosis on their date. Our responses were: E.G. Carlstrom, senior-Tell her to go out with Steve Rosholt ... he'll know what to do to it! Jeff Lindemann, sophomore-I'd try to be understanding and not stare ... 1 know how I feel when people look at mine. Dave Burkett, senior-I don't have any dates. Eric Hitchcock, senior-Carefully remove it with my tongue. Leah Hirsch, sophomore-I'd lick it off. John McCutcheon, alumni-I'd make her take a bath in sulfuric acid. Mike Acklin, sophomore-Give her a couple more. Les~ Brown, sophomore-Throw it out the door. George Trezos, senior-I would give Christy B. a steak, put her in a room with Tina before an infection occurred! Right L.W. Mr. Kay, unknown-I would set her up with Bill Rosenfeld, because he has ecchymosis in his jeans too!! Ha ha Bill! Eriq Leonhart, sophomore-I'd politely ask him if I could have it to give it to Sarah, because Lord knows that she needs one! Nichole Cheeney, sophomore-Pick it off and step on it! Ed Sipes, junior-It depends on where I found it. Mark Hunsaker, senior-Wrap her up in Saran Wrap and send her to Siberia. Tona Edwards, sophomore-Find a new date. John Reese, sophomore-I'd cut it and suck it so it wouldn't spread. Jill Cederlof, sophomore-Remove it! Or scream! Eric Rinehart, junior-Use protection! Carol Brown, senior-I'd say "EEECK", and then I'd run away! Deg Davies; junior-I enjoy it so much, I'd give her another one. Mindi Smith, sophomore-I would say, "Oh how cute!"

By the way, ecchymosis means a bruise!!!!!

Athletes feats Basketball

Playing in the Phoenix Union High School District Holiday Tournament and being in aproximately two tough games may be hard work, but the Arcardia Titan Basketball Team has given their best effort to make this a successful season.

The team has faced some very tough competition recently. On January 8th, they confronted Alhambra, who was currently ranked 3rd in the State. The Titans lost 45 - 75 to their opponent. Dan Colson led the rebounds as he took eight.

The Titans were up in the next game they played. They pounded on the Maryvale Panthers as they won 85 - 66 at Maryvale. Unfortunately when they played Agua Fria on January 15th, Arcardia lost 78 - 66.

It is only every once in a while that an athlete manages to be high scorer for almost every game. But a certain Junior here at Arcardia has led almost every game as high scorer including the three most recent games. If you're wondering who this amazing athlete is check over this month's "Athlete of the Month. " Sean Lake has done exactly this. Not only is Sean a tremendous scorer, but he is also a fantastic rebounder as well. His leadership and talent have brought the team together this year.

Sean also showed his talent at the Phoenix Union High School District Holiday Tournament. He led his team both in points and rebounds as he scored 56 points and 29 rebounds in the 3 games played.

Of eight teams, Arcardia placed 2nd in the

consolation bracket. The Titans played Central, Cortez, and Maryvale. They were barely edged 68 - 69 by a last minute shot by Central. The Titans recoevered and coasted to an easy win over Cortez 60 - 48. In their last game, Maryvale beat Arcardia 71 - 55.

Troy Kochis did a tremendous job scoring 27 points throughout the games while Mark Marmanek had 24 rebounds. Duane Behrmann showed his skill as he scored 21 points and the same number of rebounds.

Coached by Richard Yee, the team expects to do better as the season porogresses. The trainer is David Wohl. Assistant trainer is Tammi Smith, and Statisticians are Tony Nowak and Claudia Higgs.

Wrestling With the experienced coaches such as Mick Barone and Dino Barber, the 1984-85 wrestling team is bound to have a winning season. Even though the wrestlers started the season a little slow and currently have a 1-3-1 record, the team has recently begun to show outstanding improvement. Considering that it is a young team with only two seniors, the eighteen member team wrestles tough.

"Our goal is to be a respectable team," comments Coach Mick Barone. Coach Barone, from Montana, has wrestled for about six years. He placed second in Montana State

Wrestling Championships and third in Tri-State.

Coach Dino Barber is the two time NCAA All-American Powerlifting Champion. He benches about 560 and is the weight training coach for the Oakland A's. The two coaches both taught at Saguaro previously and this is their first year at Arcadia.

In addition to the experienced coaching given by these two men, the team has some very respectable athletes. Anrew Nabity Ed Elliot are the main forces which carry the team to victory.

When the team recently attended the McClintock Invitational, Andrew Nabity placed 5th. Six of the sixteen teams attending the meet ranked top 10 in the state so it was obviously a tough meet.

Wrestling Divisionals will be held on Feb. 8th. Good luck wrestlers!

SOCCER The Arcadia Soccer team

has done a relatively good job this season. They have played a total of six games, of which they won one, lost four, and tied one. Their toughest game was against Gilbert, when the game went into overtime and the final score was 5 -3 Gilbert. The games are played at 3:45 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The players have a lot of talent. With the help of Coach Schaeffer and some assistants, they have the potential of becoming a fine "team." The starters on the team are: Scott Watko, center half-back; Jason Shorb, left full-back; Steve Koskola, sweeper/center forward; Bill Bran, right fullback; Jeff Brookher, sweeper; Jason Price, left wing; Jason Glasner, right wing; Kevin Ford, right half-back, Scott Hammond, goal keeper; Tommy Dane, left half-back. The remaining players are: Steve Abt, Perry Brooks, Mark Marahello, Kent Lassen, Buddy Hammond, Mike Tassoni, Dave

Burkett, Mia Onodera, and Kehli Wardell. Well, good luck with the rest of the season, and we hope to see many of you next year doing an even better job.

Athletes of the Month

Andrea The outstanding girl athlete

for February is Andrea Marin. She is on the varsity softball team and her position is pitcher. Last summer, she pitched for a team that placed first in metro Phoenix, first in Arizona . and third in the Rocky Mountain Regionals.

When asked what she thought about this year's varsity softball team, she replied, "They're a young team, but if they all stay with it, they could be great."

Miss Hughes is the coach of the softball team, and Andrea's father is a part time coach to the team.

Andrea attributes much of her success to both her mother and her father. "If it weren't for them, I don't know where I'd be."

Andrea hopes to receive a scholarship for softball and plans to major in sports medicine. She enjoys playing volleyball and basketball also.

Andrea is a true credit to Arcadia, especially to the varsity softball team.

Month. Sean's main interest is basketball, which he has played for several years. His brother was the one who inspired him to play basketball.

The very first week of basketball, Sean was nominated player of the week. After graduating from Arcadia, he hopes to get a basketball scholarship in Utah. In fact, Sean likes basketball so much, he even sleeps with one! Sean's best game. was against Central. He liked it because of the fact that he prefers to listen to soul music and breakdance like Andrew Hartsfield! Like most people, Sean has his "Idols". When I asked him who his "Idols" were, he said in a convincing voice, "Mike Jordan and Steve Rosholt, but I want to be just like Steve."

During the summer, he enjoys water skiing and swimming. In the winter he does a lot of snow skiing at Alta. He also enjoys underwater basket weaving year round. Along with all of Sean's hobbies, he has a little side one which is collecting "curvature"things from different states, even in foreign countries-if he ever makes it there! Well, good luck, Sean, and we hope you make it to Utah.

Valentine's Day

How sweet how sentimental, it's Valentine's Day,

Another reason to eat, isn't that what they say?

Eat, eat more candy more cake

until all you have left is a FAT stomach ache.

It's hurting so bad you lay down and dream,

I can't understand, what does Valentines mean?

Your mind starts to wonder and you begin to think,

a heart appears fluorescently pink.

It's the time of year when a couple's love will enhance,

the fighting will stop and in comes romance.

Some see stars, some think it's stupid,

others believe there is a midget named Cupid.

He supposedly sits on a cloud in the sky,

shooting his arrow putting love in your eye.

I have to believe that Cupid is there,

because love doesn't start from a friendly affair.

Even if you think this poem is gay,

I wish you a Happy Valentine's Day!!!
