Ryan Lahey, G4, was one of three finalists for the 2013 CCVR Young Investigator Research Awards, as announced by E. Douglas Lewandowski, PhD, Director of the Center for Cardiovascular Research and Professor in the Departments of Physiology & Biophysics and Medicine (Cardiology). The three finalists presented their work as oral abstract presenta-tions during the CCVR research day activities on Tuesday September 10, 2013 and were selected by a panel of CCVR faculty from the abstract submissions for the CCVR Research Day. Ryan’s presentation, entitled: “Lipid dynamics in de-compensated hearts are influenced by chain composition of major dietary fats and linked to nuclear signaling through peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-alpha”, won first prize.

Mir (Isaam) Isaamullah, M1, was elected Historian in the September 2013 elections for the M1 Class Board.

On September 13, 2013, the Office of Student Affairs announced the members of the Class of 2014 that were inducted into the COM chapter of the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society, including two MSTP students, Sachin Moonat, M4 and Lawren (Ren) VandeVrede, M4. AOA was founded in 1902 by William Webster Root and five other medical students at the College of Physicians and Surgeons, which eleven years later became the U of I COM. AOA is organized for educational purposes exclusively and not for profit, and its aims shall be the promotion of scholarship and research in medical schools, the encouragement of a high standard of character and conduct among medical students and gradu-ates, and the recognition of high attainment in medical science, practice, and related fields.

At the Department of Physiology & Biophysics 24th Annual Awards/Recognition Evening on November 20, 2013, the fol-

lowing awards were given to MD-PhD students: 2013 Kate Barany Graduate Student Award – Sarah Baumgarten, G3 2013 Mark R. Lambrecht Award for Scholarship and Commitment: Ryan Lahey, G4

On November 26, 2013, Michael Cho, PhD, Professor in the Department of Bioengineering and Thesis Advisor to Farah Shareef, G3, proudly informed us that Farah was a winner of the 2013 Chancellor's Graduate Research Fellowship.

Dr. Tobacman, wearing his hat as Senior Associate Dean of Research, had the pleasure of announcing the 2013 COM Research Forum Award winners, including these MD-PhD students: Honorable Mention to Ryan Lahey, G4 (Physiology and Biophysics), Michael Marshall, G1 (Anatomy and Cell Biology), Christine Haddad, G3 (Microbiology and Immunol-ogy), and Justin Sysol, G1 (Medicine).

On December 5, Alicia Rizzo proudly reported that her American Heart Association grant application was awarded with a fellowship.

The FMC Technologies, Inc, Educational Fund Selections Committee selected Farah Shareef on March 25 as the win-ner of their 2014-15 Fellowship Award. This award was established in 1963 by a generous donation to the U. of I. Foun-dation by 1897 alumnus Bert A. Gayman.

On Sunday, October 13, 2013, Christine Haddad, G3, ran the Chicago Marathon with a time of 3:49:23 as part of Cellmates on the Run of the Chicago Diabetes Projects, which raises funds for dia-

betes research. Prior to the run she sent out the following message, with a picture of her 2012 Mara-

thon run : Dear friends and family,

Another year, another marathon, and I am again running the Chicago Marathon this year to raise money for the Chicago Diabetes Project. Running for a cause means a lot of me, and your contribu-

tion and support in the past years has made my race experience much more meaningful. Please con-sider supporting me again this year as I do what I can to raise awareness and funds.

Congratulations to Vanessa Reese on her marriage to Ben McFadden on November 16, 2013 in Orlando, FL at her aunt's home.

Congratulations to Alan Tseng on his marriage to Cindy Hou, Guest Service Manager, Club Quarters Central Loop on De-cember 28, 2013 at Shangri-La's Far Eastern Plaza Hotel, Taipei, Taiwan. Aside from family, they had friends from the US, Taiwan, HK, Shanghai, Japan, and Europe celebrate with them.

Again we are deeply grateful to Tatiana Grzeszkiewicz, 2003, for her second generous donation to the program. This donation, in De-cember 2013, came earmarked "for something social for the students!" The Student Activities has been apprised of this wonderful news and is thinking of ways to use it to the best advan-tage of all. (At right is Dr. G’s annual Christmas photo of her family).
