PMP® Certification Exam Preparation Techniques -Patrice A. Bell, PMP®

An assumption is your application has been approved by PMP®. 1. Set aside a time and a place to study every day and stick to the schedule. It will help you focus. 2. Determine your pace to: read, review, and test on each chapter of your chosen study guide. I purchased and read both Kim Heldman and Rita Mulcahy’s guides. Kim’s content is closer to PMBOK® but Rita’s guide has exercises in addition to tests. 3. Once you determine your pace you can calculate how long it will take you to finish the study guide(s). 4. Develop a memorization technique as you read the study guide(s). I created index cards. 5. Once you have finished reading the study guide(s) and taking the quiz at the end of each chapter, take the written practice test(s) at the end of the guide(s). If you achieve a score of 70% or above, continue. 6. Use written practice tests from other sources focusing on content.

a. Create a blank answer sheet you can use for retaking written tests, if needed. b. Use practice tests for PMBOK version 5. c. I printed and practiced the following on paper: i. http://www.headfirstlabs.com/books/hfpmp/hfpmp_ch15.pdf ii. http://www.oliverlehmann.com/contents/freedownloads/ 175_PMP_Sample_Questions.pdf

iii. There are other practice tests, but did not seem accurate. There may be newer tests. iv. At this point you should score at least 80%.

Exam Preparation Techniques…. Continue …

7. If you feel comfortable, schedule the exam at the test center, between 2-4 weeks out. If you don’t live near the test center and are taking the exam in the morning, reserve a hotel room the night before the exam. To understand the test environment, visit the test center prior to exam day. I went to the test site the night before and it was hot and stuffy. I was glad I was scheduled to take the test in the morning. 8. Start taking timed on-line tests:

a. This is where you will get a feel for the actual test format and concept of test content. I use the term “concept of content” because the real exam was harder than the practice tests. b. Use your scratch paper as a “cheat sheet” while you take the practice test (I used 8 1/2 x 11”). Figure out what you need to memorize. I memorized formulas, but also “what happens when”. I created and memorized a matrix: Knowledge areas down the side and phases across the top. I also jotted down the motivational and quality theorists. c. I took the following timed online tests (but again check for more current PMBOK v.5 tests): i. http://www.oliverlehmann.com/pmp-self-test/75-free-questions.htm ii. Rita Mulcahy’s guide comes with a CD. It includes a couple of sample timed tests. I also purchased her full test version for $249, which includes over 1400 test questions. iii. Finalize your test taking strategy (I used the following strategy):

1. Answer all questions you know 2. Skip calculation questions 3. Mark for review questions with more than one “right” answer 4. Take a short break (I brought a snack/water) 5. Circle back and answer calculation questions 6. Circle back and answer questions marked for review

Although I finished practice tests in 3 1/2 hours, it took me 4 full hours for the exam. Best of luck to you !
