ICT Parent Information Session – Monday 14th August, 7-8pm Want to know more about what’s happening in classrooms with the use of ICT? Want an update of the 2017 Seniors iPad Pilot Program? Please come along to this information session in the Senior Building as we share current ways in which ICT is embedded into everyday classroom programs (current Grade 4 parents especially encouraged to attend).

Literacy and Numeracy Week - Monday 21st – 25th August This will be a week of special activities and events, focusing upon the importance of building strong foundational literacy and numeracy skills. The book week theme for this week is: ‘Escape to Everywhere’.

We will have the Book Fair operating again back in Library all week, on Wednesday 23rd August from 2.30-3.30pm there will be a Maths Open Session in all classrooms, Buddy Activities - maths trail/coding/reading with a buddy for an hour during the week, a Writing competition (based on the theme Escape to Everywhere), Family Maths problem solving competition sent home during the week prior and newsletter inserts – helping your child at home with literacy/numeracy. Something for everyone we hope!

New Canteen Menu and Special Lunch Day Our new Canteen Manager (Karina) has modified the canteen menu, adding some additional healthy options. This menu will commence on Tuesday 15th August. Copies of the new menu are available from the Office or on the school’s website.

On Thursday 24th August the canteen will have a Special Lunch Day and offer Book Week Burgers. Order forms will be sent home with students today. Please ensure these order forms and correct money are returned directly to the canteen by Tuesday 22nd August. The menu includes vegie burgers and gluten free rolls.

Refurbishment Works of Juniors/Admin Building Set to Commence The tender processes has commenced and prior to the end of this term we hope to have appointed a contractor to undertake these major refurbishment works. We will have to endure several months of disruption as the 90 year old building gets a significant modernisation and upgrade. Works will be staged and the first phase may involve Junior H and Junior B classes relocating to the Multi for a significant period of Term 4. Updates of confirmed plans will be published as they are known.

Parent Opinion Survey Each year a sample of parents are asked to complete a survey which provides feedback to the school across a range of operations and policies.

This has just been launched for 2017 and if you have been contacted about such a survey (by email) please help us with our improvement agenda by completing the online survey – your thoughts do matter and can help us to make our school a better place for all. The Department of Education oversees the collation of feedback responses and these can be compared to previous years of Mano data and to other like schools and the state.

Next Week is ES Week! In the week beginning Monday 14thAugust we note the very significant and caring contributions made by our Education Support staff – the General Office ladies, the many Classroom Aides, our Chaplain and Gardener/Handyman. It would be scary to think how a school could operate effectively without such a team and at Mano we will show our appreciation of these key people in this state-wide ES week. If you see them, you might just say thanks and pass on a smile!

A message for all parents and carers who have a child in the Middles

Learning Area

Our maths focus for Term 3 is for students to learn their Times Tables. We would love your help at home to

support your child with learning their times tables. You can help by playing the following games at home

with them and encouraging your child to logon on to the following apps at home.

Below is a list of fun learning games and apps your child has been using at school to help them learn their

times tables:

Games: Tennis, Harry Potter, Around the World, Steps, Pacman, Get Out of My House

iPad Apps/Online Activities: Maths Rocks, Timetable Toons, Mathletics, Times Tables You Tube Clips

If you have the following items or resources at home: Cards, Dice, Grid Paper, Stop Watches.

Please encourage your child to practice.

They can also practice by:

Writing down their times tables and memorising and practicing verbally. Practising in the car is also a great way they can use their time!

A multiplication strengths and challenges note will be sent home regularly to let you know what times tables your child is up to.

We appreciate your help and happy practicing!

Middles Teachers: Lisa Benson, Amy Barr, Ande Santilli, Alicia Wakeman and Ashlee Roach.

The Manifold Heights Primary School Art Show

The fish for the Community Art Piece have been distributed. We are enjoying seeing the finished results of your creative efforts. There is

a collection box for your masterpieces at the office.

The 2017 Art Show is called ‘Inspired.’ The show will follow the same format as the past shows. Students will be dismissed as normal on

Wednesday September 6th. Once they have gone, all staff help to transform the school! The Art work of every student is displayed ready

for tours starting at the office any time between 5:00-7:00pm. Again families will collect a brochure at the office and a tour map. After com-

pleting each section of the school, families will receive a stamp on the back of the brochure. All brochures go into the draw for Art Packs

which will be drawn at the following Monday’s school assembly.

The students have already been working on their pieces. They are certainly INSPIRED!

SCHOOL BANKING School Banking day is FRIDAY Remember, Friday is School Banking day and students should bring in their weekly deposit. For every deposit made at school, students will receive a silver Dollarmites token. Once students have individually collected 10 tokens they can redeem them for an exclusive School Banking reward item in recognition of their regular savings habits. School Banking is also a great fundraiser for our school, raising 5% on every deposit made through the school (to a maximum of $10 per individual deposit). If your child has lost their book, they can bring their money to school in a sealed envelope with a note on the next School Banking day. We will issue them with a replacement. Win a family adventure holiday at Tokyo Disneyland! This year, School Banking is running a Future Savers Grand Prize competition that will take one lucky School Banker all the way to Tokyo, Japan. The winner gets an unforgettable family trip, for up to two adults and three children, where they’ll explore Tokyo Disney-land with its amazing attractions, including the futuristic Tomorrowland, plus enjoy the fun rides at Tokyo DisneySea. Students who make 15 or more School Banking deposits by the end of Term 3, 2017 will be automatically entered into the draw. Department of Education and Training that is conducted amongst a sample of randomly selected parents at each school.

It is designed to assist our school in gaining an understanding of parents’ perception of school climate, student engagement and relationships with our parent community. Our school will use the survey results to help inform and direct future school planning and improvement strategies. The survey will be conducted online by ORIMA Research Pty Ltd and only takes 15 minutes to complete. The survey can be accessed via desktop

computer, laptop, tablet or mobile at any convenient time within the fieldwork period from Monday 7th August to Sunday 27th August.

Approximately 30 per cent of parents will be invited to participate in this year’s survey via email. All responses to the survey are anonymous.

The online survey is available in English, Arabic, Vietnamese, Mandarin, Chin (Hakha) and Hindi. Survey language guides will be provided in a range of languages including Albanian, Bengali, Burmese, Cantonese, Dari, Filipino, Greek, Gujarati, Indonesian, Japanese, Karen, Khmer, Korean,

Macedonian, Malayalam, Pashto, Persian, Punjabi, Russian, Serbian, Sinhalese, Somali, Spanish, Tagalog, Tamil, Telugu, Turkish or Urdu.
