Geelong Mayor Bruce Harwood Visited Mano! On Monday at Assembly we were very privileged to have the Mayor of the City of Greater Geelong, Mr Bruce Harwood, attend our whole of school weekly Assembly.

This was in response to a wonderful letter that Sadie Hurst (Grade 2O) sent him.

Bruce told us how he became the Mayor, where he went to school, what the Mayoral role duties were, how he gets lots of letters and that he is Patrick Dangerfield’s father-in-law! He brought along the Mayoral robe and Sadie wore this as she interviewed him in front of the whole school. The Mayor was very impressed with our children’s behaviour and attentiveness at Assembly.

Pupil Free Day – Friday 9th August As previously advertised this day is pupil free and no classes will be conducted for students accordingly.

Plans for staff on this day include building our capacities around Literacy and Numeracy teaching, together with a session on positive mental health strategies.

Regular classes will resume on Monday 12th August.

Looking for ways to extend your child in Numeracy? Parents may wish to consider this opportunity – Gateways offer an upcoming one day program suited to very capable students.

It will be conducted at South Geelong Primary School: 4th September for Grade 1, 2, 3 students and 5th September for Grade 4, 5, 6.

Chocolates for Sale There are still some boxes of Cadbury chocolate fundraisers available for sale – boxes of 60 chocolates at $30 (half price!).

Selling this will help us to redeem some costs and support the finalising of the profit margin achieved on the Cadbury

chocolate drive held earlier this year.

Please enquire at the General Office. Maybe your swimming club, netball team, dance group, etc might like to purchase some boxes and run their own little fundraiser?

Parent Opinion Survey: We Want Our Parents To Tell Us What They Think! Government schools are conducting a survey to find out what parents think of their school. The Parent Opinion Survey is an annual survey offered by the Department of Education and Training that is conducted amongst a sample of randomly selected parents. It is designed to assist schools in gaining an understanding of parents’ perceptions of school climate, student behaviour and student engagement. Our school will use the survey results to help inform and direct future school planning and improvement strategies. Randomly selected parents will be invited to participate in this year’s survey. All responses to the survey are anonymous. This year the Parent Opinion Survey will be conducted from Monday 22nd July to Sunday 11th August.

A link to the survey was sent via email last week.

The survey will be conducted online, only takes 10-15 minutes to complete, and can be accessed at any convenient time within the fieldwork period on desktop computers, laptops, tablets or smartphones. The online survey will be available in a range of languages other than English. These include: Arabic, Vietnamese, Mandarin, Chin (hakha), Hindi, Japanese, Somali, Turkish, Punjabi and Greek. The survey results will be reported back to the school at the end of September. We use these results to ensure that we are meeting the needs of the school community in a variety of areas. Please keep an eye on your inbox for an email from the school inviting you to participate.

Helping with Primary School Maths Whether your primary school child is bringing home maths that you are familiar with or not, you can still support them to learn.

Here are some ideas how:

Understanding the question: Encourage your child to take the time to think about what is being asked of them. Ask them to explain to you what the problem means and how they would solve it, for example, “How would you work that out? Do you need to use addition, multiplication or division?” Talking the math problem through will assist them with their learning and comprehension.

Multiplication practice: Simple multiplication is an important part of Maths, and practice is the key! Encourage your child to practise the times tables. Try turning multiplication practice into a fun game by asking your child the occasional multiplication question as they wait for dinner, in the car or walking the dog. For example, “What’s six times seven?”

Pause with the answers: When your child is struggling to answer a math equation, hold off giving them the answer. Instead, encourage them to solve it themselves by giving them tips such as, “We know six times five is 30, so seven times five would be 30 plus five”.

classroom to produce some fantastic work. Keep up the excellent effort Jarvis!

2C AALIYAH GEARON - Aaliyah always shows great resilience and persistence when completing her set tasks in the

classroom. She never gives up and always tries her best. Magnificent Aaliyah!

2O CALEB HART - Caleb readily adapts to changes in the timetable or classroom. He is also prepared to try his best at

any activity. Awesome Caleb!

MC JACK VICKERS - Jack has demonstrated resilience this week when completing his work. He is able to reflect on and

apply feedback to ensure he is making the most of his learning time. Great effort Jack!

MG ITAI MUDZEKENYEDZI - For showing great resilience and pushing on, having the initiative to try a different strategy

when the task became challenging.

MM PATRICK IVEY - Patrick has shown great maturity in managing his emotions this term. As a result, he is happily

completing tasks in the allocated time and is engaging with others in a friendly and jovial manner. Top Job Patrick!

MS ALEXANDER STYLES - Alexander showed his love for school and resilience when he chose to stay at school the

day he got back from holidays. He also showed great responsibility by practising his times tables while away.

MW AVA HINES - Ava is a mature student who always demonstrates resilience as well as a positive attitude. When faced

with change she has demonstrated that she is able to easily adapt. Awesome Ava!

SB LIAM GREGOIRE - Liam adapts to changes easily and shows resilience when taking on feedback about his

behaviour and trying his best to improve. His broad grin is always welcome and he is always willing to have a go in

class. Great job Liam!

SN LEWIS MORRISON - Lewis has been making a huge effort to bounce back when challenges arise during class time.

This allows him to make the most of his learning time. Legendary Lewis!

SS EVE MCDONALD - Eve has shown some superstar ideas this week in connecting new ideas to things she has

already learned. Keep up the superstar effort Eve!

SV ALEXIS JOVANOVSKI - Alexis has returned from her holiday and shown a great amount of resilience by springing back to school life and doing her best. Awesome Alexis!

Manifold Heights Primary School Art Show

The 2019 Art Show is called Places to Go and Things to See. The show will follow the same format as the past shows. Students

will be dismissed as normal on Wednesday 4th September. Once they have gone, all staff help to transform the school! The

artwork of every student is displayed ready for tours starting at the Prep building any time between 5:00pm—7:00pm. Again

families will collect a brochure at the starting point and a tour map. After completing each section of the school, families will

receive a stamp on the back of the brochure. All brochures go into the draw for Art Packs which will be drawn at the following

Monday’s Whole School Assembly.

Art Show Community Mural

Once again we will be making a Community Mural for our Art Show on 4th September. Last Friday a pack was

sent home with the eldest in each family. There was a note explaining the activity and a CD for decorating. It is

designed to be a fun activity. Please see me if you have any questions.

Manifold Heights Community Garden News

Thank you to those wonderful people who are helping us weed, water, plant and mulch the organic edible food

forest!

On the first Saturday of each month, you are invited to meet other friendly, like-minded people to swap produce and ideas in the

community garden from 9:30am-11:30am (enter from Manifold Street) and to join our group if you wish to

participate in the fun of producing and harvesting local, seasonal, organic food.

Do You Volunteer at Mano?

If you volunteer at the school, whether it be helping in the classroom, with Bike Ed, at the Carnivale, processing books in the

Library, attending excursions or activities such as the Walkathon, it is a Department of Education & Training requirement that you

MUST have a valid Volunteer Working with Children Check and have supplied a copy of your card to the Office.

If you don’t have a valid Working with Children Check please apply at http://www.workingwithchildren.vic.gov.au/. There is no cost

for a Volunteer Working with Children Check (a passport photo is required). Please ask at the General Office if you need a hand –

we look forward to seeing our students continue to benefit from the amazing work that parents do as volunteers at our school.

Please check with your local post office if they process Working with Children Checks.

Chaplain’s Corner Dear Mano community,

I would just like to inform you all that I will be finishing my time as Chaplain at Mano next Tuesday, 6th August. I have very much

enjoyed pastorally supporting students, families and staff, as well as the whole community during my time as Chaplain.

A big thank you and goodbye to all that I’ve journeyed with over the past years. I wish the very best for you, your families and Mano. Mano is a great school and the classroom teachers will be able to readily assist you if you feel you or your family needs any additional support. Peta Mundine and Barry Rowland are also excellent welfare supports and can connect you with outside agen-cies if required.

Library News During Term 3 the Library lessons will continue to focus on the Book Week theme ‘Reading Is My Secret Power’ with class studies based on the Children’s Book Council shortlisted books. Students have completed some creative and imaginative work on the following texts, ‘Heads and Tails’, ‘Noni the Pony Rescues a Joey’, ‘Red House, Blue House, Green House and Tree House’. Students’ work will be displayed in the Library.

In order for students to develop regular borrowing habits, it would be beneficial for parents to assist their children in the borrowing process by bringing a personal, named Library bag to each session. The Library Timetable for Term 3 is as follows:

Monday: Grades 1C, 1A, 1S & Prep A

Tuesday: Grades 2B, 2C, Prep H, Prep T & 2O

Scholastic Book Fair During week 6, Monday 19th – Friday 23rd August, Mano will be having our second Scholastic Book Fair for 2019. This will be an exciting week celebrating Book Week, Science Week, Literacy and Numeracy Week. Students are always very keen to read and browse the broad selection of books on display.

All parents and grandparents are most welcome to share the experience with the students. All profits from book sales during the Book Fair will go towards enriching the School Library and encouraging a love for reading books.

What’s happening in Grade 2?

In Term 3 the Grade 2s have been learning about multiplication. They have learnt about repeated addition and how to add numbers together to solve multiplication equations. They have also learnt how different numbers or amounts can be split into equal groups. Another topic that the Grade 2s have learnt about is Graphs and how to display data. Students have enjoyed conducting surveys and presenting the data they have collected in graphs.

At ‘Mano’ we want our students to be problem solvers and explorers when thinking about Maths. Talking at home about ‘Real Life’ problems and using everyday Math language builds self-confidence in our children.

SCHOOL BANKING School Banking day is FRIDAY

Remember, Friday is School Banking day and students should bring in their weekly deposit. For every deposit made at school, students will receive a silver Dollarmites token. Once students have individually collected 10 tokens they can redeem them for an exclusive School Banking reward item in recognition of their regular savings habits. School Banking is also a great fundraiser for our school, raising 5% on every deposit made through the school (to a maximum of $10 per individual deposit). If your child has lost their book, they can bring their money to school in a sealed envelope with a note on the next School Banking day. We will issue them with a replacement. If your child is not attending the OSHC program on any day they are booked, you must let us know via phone on the Manifold

Heights OSHC mobile phone service number which is 0405 422 142. We are to follow correct procedures in locating children who

have not shown up at the service. Please ensure you communicate via call or text if your child is not attending the OSHC program

service and there is a prior booking for the day.
