Mano Students Set Individual Learning Goals

Students have settled quickly back into effective daily school routines during the first weeks of term. One area of focus across all grade levels is helping students to understand ‘where they are at’ – usually via a combination of formal and informal testing and assessment. Armed with this knowledge the mastery of strategies and actions which will achieve learning growth is the key. At Assembly on Monday we had 8 students who each shared some of their very specific learning goals for Term 1 – some were highlighted via their end of 2018 School Reports. Research would support the premise that – if we know where we are at, we know where we want to get to and also how to get there, then success will follow. I ask parents to ask their children what they are working on improving, why and how they are trying to improve. In most cases, support at home can assist significantly with the pursuit of learning goals and targets.

Permission Forms and Information Notes Issued to Students

The start of a new school year is always a busy time for permission notes and alike. PLEASE ask your children if they have any notes from their teachers for you to read and/or sign and return to school each day – and check their bags! This will help greatly with school organisational matters and help to ensure that your child does not miss out on important activities and opportunities. If in doubt about an activity or a due date please contact the General Office.

Do you have COMPASS on your phone and refer to it often?

Term 1 Camps for Grade 4 and 6 Students

Our annual camping program will be in full swing late this term with Grade 4s heading to Anglesea and Grades 6s to Maldon. These promise to be fabulous experiences for our students, with staff preparing and finalising details of the trips in the coming weeks. We do appreciate that the cost of these camps early in the school year places financial strain on family budgets – whilst we are asking for expressions of interest and deposits to confirm places, we are very happy to support payment plans which can extend into dates after the camps are conducted. Please contact the office staff or myself to arrange this if deemed appropriate.

Upcoming School Council Elections

School Council elections will be conducted during Term 1 in Government Schools.

I encourage parents to consider nominating for parent representation on Council and contributing to our school in such a manner. Assisting with policy development and reviewing requires a range of opinions and thoughts, as we strive to achieve the best of outcomes for our students whilst adhering to Department of Education & Training guidelines and regulations. Support with school financial management, overseeing fundraising, monitoring of the Annual Improvement Plan and participating in committees such as ICT school planning are areas which parents might feel they are able to contribute. Our School Council meets twice per school term (usually on the Monday evenings of the 4th and 8th week of each

term). The first meeting for 2019 will be Monday 18th February. Next week’s newsletter will include details of how to nominate and the timeline for elections. Please feel welcome to talk Mrs Mundine, myself or existing members for further information.

Internet Safety and Cyber Bullying – Senior Constable Robbie Noggler Bisit (Geelong Youth Resource Officer)

It has been terrific to have Robbie back at Mano supporting our Middles and Seniors with these important issues.

Robbie delivered with care and empathy, two very well received sessions which focused upon very current issues for our young people.

Some of his messages which resonated with our students included: Cyber bullying can take many forms, Stop and Think, Tell a trusted adult and Speak – even if your voice shakes (Dolly Everett story). Robbie is available to return to Mano and conduct parent sessions if we feel this would be needed.

With close to 50% of current students in the Middles now having an iPad which they are encouraged to bring to school to support their learning, this work is both relevant and vital in 2019 for young people. He referred very clearly to the options available for students to seek help if they are feeling unsafe or uncomfortable when online – number one being their parents!

Do You Volunteer at Mano?

If you volunteer at the school, whether it be helping in the classroom, with Bike Ed, at the Carnivale, processing books in the

Library, attending excursions or activities such as the Walkathon, it is a Department of Education & Training requirement that you MUST

have a valid Volunteer Working with Children Check and have supplied a copy of your card to the Office.

If you don’t have a valid Working with Children Check please apply by following the instructions attached to this newsletter. There is no cost

for a Volunteer Working with Children Check (a passport photo is required). Please ask at the General Office if you need a hand – we look

DIGITAL TATTOO

PARENT/CARER INFORMATION SESSION (All Parents Welcome)

Middle Department Hub

Wednesday 13th February, 6:30pm - 8pm

Young People live in an amazing world, they seamlessly move between their ‘online world’ and ‘living directly world’. As a

community this can create some in trepidation as they baffle us with their speed and connectivity, take risks and sometimes make

mistakes.

The success of the Digital Tattoo project is in the strength of the school-family partnership. By providing education to

students, teachers and parents/carers at the same time the project aims to begin a number of conversations which will

continue long after the project is finished.

This session is a chance for parents and carers to come together and look at how Young People use their Digital Space and

explore opportunities to support them whilst they navigate and build their skills online.

The session runs for 90 mins is interactive and aims to build knowledge and skills for families.

TOPICS INCLUDE

From YouTube to social media, gaming to SnapChat we will talk about looking out for your mates, the importance of strong

role modeling, conversation starters for home, monitoring gaming habits, gambling and all things online.

FEEDBACK FORM PARENTS/CARERS WHO HAVE ATTENDED THIS SESSION –

‘The whole thing was fantastic. It’s always going to be hard to cover all the content in one evening but you did extremely well. Loads of

great ideas and communicated in an accessible and humourous way. A fun evening! Thanks for keeping up with the research too- that

feels good to have that tied inot the anecdotes.’ ‘ Stop the head in the sand mentality ‘ ‘Learning that prohibition doesn’t work.’ ‘Funny,

entertaining, informative’ ‘Lots of practical tips delivered in an accessible way’

SCHOOL BANKING School Banking day is FRIDAY - resumes Friday 8th February 2019 Remember, Friday is School Banking day and students should bring in their weekly deposit. For every deposit made at school, students will receive a silver Dollarmites token. Once students have individually collected 10 tokens they can redeem them for an exclusive School Banking reward item in recognition of their regular savings habits. School Banking is also a great fundraiser for our school, raising 5% on every deposit made through the school (to a maximum of $10 per individual deposit). If your child has lost their book, they can bring their money to school in a sealed envelope with a note on the next School Banking day. We will issue them with a replacement.
