TRANSCRIPT

ORGANIC CHM 250 lab-what to expect?By : Dr. Robert D. Craig, Ph.D

In the past-1980’s

• Large text books• Needed to memorize “Reactions of functional

groups and mechanism”

Chemials you are dealing with

• Are ofcourse-are Acids –Bases or Organic!• They have high vapour pressures• They are Flammable

Safety in a car

lab coats

• Can be taken off if something spills on You

Accidents could be from some else

Just like a drunken driver

• You are not always the cause-some other lab

Most organic molecules are tearing agents-leave lab when feeling dizzy!

Also –No contact lens!!

No flip flops –when warmer!!

• Proper footwear is imperative-sneakers OK!

The labs are cold-be prepared

Water flow simulates air flow

When Some has an accident . .

Lastly –respect for others

Assignments will look like this

Week 2 : 2/6/2012 Prelab Questions: Due 2/6/2012 at the start of the class:• Please watch required video-download sample lab-• Define what is a crystal?• Write an expanded outline for the seven-step process

of crystallization.• *This will be included in the lab report

.

.

• This technique is used for obtaining a compound in pure solid form of well-defined geometrically shaped crystals. This process of crystallization can be used for the purification of a compound only when the compound and the impurities present in it differ considerably in their solubilities in any particular solvent

Digimelt apparatus

Chapter 4: Melting point- Please watch required video in portal

• 3.) (3 sentences) Why are melting points

recorded?• Review operation of “Digimelt apparatus”*This will be included in the lab report
