Not Just Fleurons: Calligraphy
Calligraphy
Calligraphy is a very beautiful artform, where very thin and delicate lines can be created. Overlaping and playing around with calligraphy, the possibilities are end-less. Personally calligraphy reminds me of flower forms, as their very free and delicate, same qualities of most flowers.
Summer set lip to earth’s bosom bare,And left the flushed print in a poppy there.- Francis Thompson, “The Poppy,” 1891
How can one help shivering with delight when one’s hot fingers close around the stem of a live flower, cool from the shade and stiff with newborn vigor! - Colette

Flowers seem intended for the solace of ordinary humanity. - John Ruskin

When you have only two pennies left in the world, buy a loaf of bread with one, and a lily with the other. ~Chinese Proverb
If you’ve never been thrilled to the very edges of your soul by a flower in spring bloom, maybe your soul has never been in bloom. - Terri Guillemets
Flowers have an expression of countenance as much as men or animals. Some seem to smile; some have a sad expression; some are pensive and diffident; others again are plain, honest and upright, like the broad-faced sunflower and the hollyhock. - Henry Ward Beecher, Star Papers: A Discourse of Flowers
Not Just Fleurons: Flower Quotes
Flowers & Humans
There are many quites that include flowers as they are very metaphoric for life and death, as they live and die just like us. There are many similarities between humans and plants. Even when we give flowers to someone, there is a reason for this and a meaning for which flowers are being given.
Flowers are the sweetest things God ever made, and forgot to put a soul into. - Henry Beecher, Life Thoughts, 1858
Earth laughs in flowers. - Ralph Waldo Emerson
I’d rather have roses on my table than diamonds on my neck. - Emma Goldman
People from a planet without flowers would think we must be mad with joy the whole time to have such things about us. - Iris Murdoch, A Fairly Honourable Defeat
For myself I hold no preferences among flowers, so long as they are wild, free, spontaneous. Bricks to all greenhouses! Black thumb and cutworm to the potted plant! - Edward Abbey
I will be the gladdest thingUnder the sun!I will touch a hundred flowersAnd not pick one.- Edna St. Vincent Millay, “Afternoon on a Hill”
To be overcome by the fragrance of flowers is a delectable form of defeat. - Beverly Nichols
Flowers... are a proud assertion that a ray of beauty outvalues all the utilities of the world. - Ralph Waldo Emerson, 1844
A morning-glory at my window satisfies me more than the metaphysics of books. - Walt Whitman
‘Tis my faith that every flowerEnjoys the air it breathes!- William Wordsworth, “Lines Written in Early Spring,” Lyrical Ballads, 1798

Marian Bantjes is a very talented designer and has produced many successful designs to this day. These pieces of work particularly took my fancy, as the patterns almost look flowery, yet have text cleverly integrated within the design,

Not Just Fleurons: Physical Properties
Reproduction
Inside the blossom of a flower is the reproductive organs of the flower. The petals enclose a pistil, stamen or sometimes both. The petals protect the reproductive parts from outside interferences. Some varieties of flower may fertilize themselves, but often they will need the help of outside forces (commonly insects and birds) to pollinate or fertilize.
Nectar
Flowers contain nectar deep in the cup of their blossom. Nectar is rich in nutrients, and the smell of it attracts birds and insects to come and feed on it. When these creatures drink the nectar in a flower, pollen will attach itself to them. As these animals move from flower to flower, the pollen (similar to se-men in humans) will rub off on other flowers and fertilize them.
Physical Properties
Blossom
The most notable part of a flower is the blossom. The blos-som is often a showy, colorful collection of petals that grows at the top of a stem. Often the blossom emits a pleasant aroma unique to each type of flower. Blossoms are often the parts of flowers that people are most concerned with due to their pleasing aspects.
Stem
All flowers have a stem, no matter how small the flower. A stem is a stalk that attaches the blossom at one end to the roots at the other end. Through the stem passes water and energy to keep the blossoms healthy, and to provide nutrients for the reproductive process when it begins.
Roots
All flowers, and all plants in general, have roots. The roots of the flower (or of the larger plant which the flower may grow from in some cases) an-chor it to the soil, as well as ab-sorb water and nutrients from the earth. Like any other plant, the roots act as a combination of a foundation and “mouth” to absorb needed nutrients.

Kew gardens is a very tran-quil and beautiful place as it’s infested with the wildest yet healthiest flowers. I was amazed with the range of different plants i saw. From texture to colour the range was immense.
Not Just Fleurons: Colour Makes a Difference
Its not just different flowers that give different meanings. It also depends on the colour of the flower too. The rose being the most popular and colour variety, you can see how much colour can make a difference to the meaning. The way a flower is given is also part of the message too, for instance giveing a rose upside down means the opposite.

Not Just FleuronsFlower Messages
Using hundreds of gift tags, spiraling on top of each other, the shape of a flower begins to emerge. Flower Messages.
Not Just FleuronsRetail Sales
How do people buy flowers:The UK fresh cut flower and indoor plant market is worth £2.2 billion at retail level. To put this in perspective, the UK music industry is worth around £2 billion.
This represents an average spend per person per year of £36 (£28 on flowers and £8 on plants). In the UK we spend £9 on cut flowers for every £1 we spend on indoor plants.
Around 60% of the £2.2 billion spent represents people buying flowers and plants for them-selves, for their own homes. Why should they be saved for special occasions only? Poeple use gardens alot more now.
Not Just FleuronsBuying Flowers
When poeple buy flowers, meanings dont usually come into the equation. Roses are well known to be associated with romance, making it common to be bought for valentines day and anniversaries. However other occasion it becomes more difficult as people aren’t aware of all the different meanings that flowers have. Usually it depends on personal preference.

Flower-Pedia
This book will be available to the public but mostly flower shops and stalls in particular. The idea is for this to act as a guide to customers when selecting flowers for whatever occasions their buying for. Staff members can also use this book for reference when selling, and can recommend certain flowers to customers. It will be sectioned by occasion, for example the first chapter is for when buying flowers for romance or an anniversary.
Not Just FleuronsGift Tags with Flower Meanings
This idea has come from looking at the meanings of flowers. As most people don’t know the meanings of each flower, i think this is an interesting fact that people would love to know. This initial design is a concer-tina fold, with a flower pattern on the front, where you can customize your message depending on whom you’re sending the bouquet to. On the reverse side are all the flowers in the bouquet, individually laid out with the meaning of that particular flower.
Not Just FleuronsPaper Samples
Brown Paper
Different designs and textures of paper would be availa-ble for tags to be made from, however could prove to be more expensive. Customers should want to pay more for better designs, and in return they get a well made tag, customized message and the meanings of every flower purchased in their bouquet.
Not Just FleuronsGift Tag Prototypes
I have tried to test out many different sizes, colours, textures and designs to see which ones work best. They’re all quite successful, it really depends on what the customer wants. Having a wide range will mean more customers will find what they want.
Not Just FleuronsGift Tags
These are the prefered size for the tags, and are available in a variety of sizes and textures.
Not Just FleuronsTag Design on website
I have decided to go with a realistic photo of the tags when it appears on websites, as customers can see exactly what their buying. The line drawing looks neater however doesnt give an authentic view for paying customers.
Not Just FleuronsTag Integration with Marks and Spencers
This is an example of how the tags would integrate into a flower website. Marks and Spencer’s is well known for their flower services, and have chosen this for an example. Once the customer has clicked on a bouquet of flowers they are interested in, it goes to a close up of the flowers with a description along the side. Underneath is where you can add to basket, and add other items, which is where my product will be advertised. All a customer would need to do is click the checkbox to include this within the purchase, and they can customize the message to give to whomever they want.
Not Just FleuronsAny Website Integration
These tags will be able to intergrate into any flower shop, the concept of having the meaning of each flower should encourage them to sell them on their websites as the meaning of the flowers is what is actually important as its the product your buying. Im sure people would like to know what their buying means. Anoter example is flowers direct website on the right. Where you can add to basket with just 1 click.
