... through much of the earths

history its been at 22 degrees Cel-

sius when there was no ice at either

pole and all the land was tropical

and subtropical. In fact ice is theenemy of life, frost is the enemy of

life, when you pass from the tropi-

cal into the subtropical and then

    into the temperate regions where

theres frost in the winter, biodiver-

    sity plummets by about 90%.

    Patrick Moore

Patrick Moore said that it would not be a bad

thing for this earth to warm up, because cold

is the enemy of life. Some of the evidence

he cited to support this statement was a

90 percent drop in biodiversity between the

tropical regions and temperate regions with

    winter frost.

This statement sounds a bit facetious with

Use a projector to display the reconstructed

historic temperature record for the last 2000

years. The record shows two important

events, the Medieval Climate Optimum and

the Little Ice Age. These two periods provide

comparative historic records of life on the hot

and cold end of the oscillating temperaturescale.

What would their day be like if they hadto rely on walking, biking, or other manualtransportation methods?

Would the school be smaller? Would theyhave to eliminate some of their after-schoolactivities? Are there friends they would see

less often? How would that change the localbusiness community? Would there be smallershops? No mall? Would their parents be ableto get to work?

The transportation involved in the products weuse every day is more invisible to the averagehigh school student, although most of themwill have seen trucks that bring soda to thestore (Pepsi and Coca-Cola trucks are so

thoroughly branded, its hard to miss them),semi-trailers along the highway, and freighttrains snaking along across the country.

Ask the students to read the essay I, Pencil. This essay explains all the details involvedin making one lead pencil. Parts come fromfar away places such as Sri Lanka (formerlyCeylon) and China, India, Brazil (countries thatgrow Castor Beans) and more familiar places

such as Missisippi and Oregon. If there is that much transportation involvedin one pencil, imagine how much is involvedwith all the other things we own. Ask thestudents to look in their books, in their bags, and their jackets. Where were these productsmade? Most of them were made overseas,in Asia and South America. They got to thecountry on freight ships. Some produce,
