What is Internet Of ThingsWhat is Internet Of Things

The Internet of Things (IoT) is the network of physical objects accessed through the Internet, as defined by technology analysts and visionaries. These objects contain embedded technology to interact with internal states or the external environment.

In the future, digital sensing, communication, and processing capabilities will be ubiquitously embedded into everyday objects, turning them into the Internet of Things (IoT). Smart devices will collect data, relay the information or context to each other, and process the information collaboratively.

Internet Of Things Contd..Internet Of Things Contd..

An IoT system is a network of networks where, typically, a massive number of objects/things/sensors/devices are connected through communications and information infrastructure to provide value-added services via intelligent data processing and management for different applications.

IoT enabling technologies such as sensors, radio frequency identification, low power and energy harvesting, sensor networks, machine-type communication, resource-constrained networks, real-time systems, IoT data analytics, in situ processing, and embedded software.

Smart Home NetworkSmart Home Network

The smart home as using computer, network and comprehensive wiring technology to integrate various subsystems related to daily life into one system through the household information management platform.

Technology for Smart HomeTechnology for Smart Home

1. Wired Mode

All the control signals are transferred by wired mode and the signal wires in controlling end are too many to check when problems happened. This mode has lots of prominent disadvantages such as complex cabling, high workload, high-cost, difficult to maintenance and difficult to build network.

Contd..Contd..

2. Wireless Mode

The wireless system applied to Smart home should have the following characteristics:1) low power consumption2) Stabilization3) easy to expand gridAs for the transmission speed, it is obvious not the key point for this application.

Contd..Contd..

Here are several wireless modes for smart home as below:

Bluetooth:

Bluetooth is kind of wireless technology supporting equipments short distances communication (in the range of 10 meters). While, this communication distance is too short and this communication mode is the point-to-point, so this kind of technology can’t meet the requirements for Smart home.

Contd..Contd..WIFI:

WIFI is kind of short distance transmission technology which supports the radio signals within several hundreds meters to connect with the Internet. The biggest feature of WIFI is that it is very easy for people to access the Internet at any time and any where.

Contd..Contd..

ZigBee / SmartRoom:

ZigBee / SmartRoom is based on the IEEE 802.15. Because IEEE only deals with the protocol of MAC layer and physical layer, ZigBee/SmartRoom Alliance expand the IEEE and standardize the network layer protocol and API.

ZigBee / SmartRoom is a new wireless network technique with short range and low -power consumption, and it mainly applies to short distance communication.

6LowPAN:6LowPAN is a networking technology

that allows IPv6 packets to be carried efficiently within small link layer frames such as those used by IEEE 802.15.4.

6LowPAN Overview6LowPAN Overview

• It is desirable to use IP to communicate with small devices.

– Widely deployed

– IPv6's addressing space is large, allowing even small devices to have a real-world routable IPv6 address.

WorkingWorking

local or remote access from the Internet (via a secured edge router)

monitor the home (temperature, humidity, activation of

remote video surveillance, status of the doors (locked or open)

Home control (activate the air conditioning/ heating, door locks, sprinklers, etc.).

Contd..Contd..

Optimize the level of energy consumption with input from various sensors -light sensors, presence detection, temperature, etc.

control electric window shades, chillers, air flow control, air conditioning and heating

Smart Grid -interactions with the Grid for dynamic monitoring or load shedding.
