Views from Fr. Larry Pichard, Pastor Although our ACTS retreats do not start until September, I would like to remind you about this deeply spiritual program. Way back in 1944 in Spain a group of laymen developed a retreat they called “Cursillos de Cristiandad,” translated as “Short Courses in Christianity”, but abbreviated as the “Cursillo”. It arrived at the USA in Spanish in 1957 in Waco, TX and spread in the Hispanic community in the USA very rapidly. The first Cursillo in the nation in English was held in San Angelo, TX in 1961. As a college freshman studying biology and chemistry, I made a Cursillo in 1965, and it was so powerful that I decided to become a priest and entered the seminary the following semester. Here I am as a priest for 43 years as a result of that experience (disclaimer: not everybody will have similar results!) The Cursillo continued to spread all throughout the USA and the world.

But in the mid1980s, it began to die out in Texas. So, a group of laymen in Selma, TX, right outside San Antonio, decided to use elements of the Cursillo and then add some other dynamics, and they named the new retreat ACTS: Adoration, Community, Theology, and Service. Like the Cursillo, ACTS spread over Texas, the nation and even was exported to several other countries.

We brought it to Frisco in September 2011. Since then, we have held 26 ACTS retreats, and over 800 parishioners have participated. We are the first parish in our diocese to offer the retreats in Spanish, and we started that in the fall of 2014.

This retreat is the best way that I know for people to renew their relationship with God and to build up bonds of friendship and love among fellow parishioners. I have been personally present as chaplain for almost the entire retreat for 14 of them and have participated in some fashion in the other 12 retreats. I have been overwhelmed by witnessing amazing conversions due to amazing grace, and I have witnessed the after-effects of devotion and dedication to the Lord and to the parish.

I hope you will trust in this retreat, and it does take trust since we don’t tell you much about the process or the methodology of the retreat. We want it to be a surprise. Like Jesus said to two disciples who had an interest in following him: “Come and see.”

Visiones del Párroco, Pbro. Larry Pichard A pesar de que nuestros retiros de ACTS son hasta septiembre, me gustaría recordarles de que se trata este programa profun-damente espiritual. Por el año 1944 en España un grupo de laicos desarrollaron un retiro que llamaron "Cursillos de Cris-tiandad" y abreviada como "Cursillo". Éstos llegaron a los Esta-dos Unidos en español en 1957 en Waco, Texas y se extendie-ron en la comunidad hispana en los Estados Unidos muy rápi-damente. El primer Cursillo en la nación en inglés se llevó a cabo en San Angelo, Texas, en 1961. En mi primer año univer-sitario de estudios de biología y química en 1965 hice un Cursi-llo, y fue tan poderoso que decidí ser sacerdote y entré en el seminario el siguiente semestre. El Cursillo siguió extendiéndose durante todos los Estados Unidos y el mundo. Al igual que el Cursillo, los retiros de ACTS se extendieron en Texas, en Esta-dos Unidos e incluso se exportó a otros países. Trajimos los Retiros de ACTS a Frisco en septiembre de 2011 y desde entonces, se han celebrado 26 retiros de ACTS y más de 800 feligreses hemos participado. Somos la pri-mera parroquia en nuestra diócesis que ofrece los retiros en español, los cuales comenzamos en el otoño de 2014. Este retiro es la mejor manera que conozco para que las personas renueven su relación con Dios y para que construyan lazos de amistad y amor entre los feligreses. Yo he estado personalmente presente, como capellán, durante casi todo el retiro en 14 de ellos y he participado de alguna manera en los otros 12 retiros. He estado sorprendido por el testimo-nio de grandes conversiones debido a la gracia increíble, y he sido testigo de los efectos de entrega y dedicación al Señor y para la parroquia de personas que lo han tomado. Espero que ustedes confíen en este retiro, ya que es difícil que tomen confianza ya que no se dice mucho sobre el proceso o la metodología del retiro ya que queremos que sea una sorpresa. Como Jesús dijo a dos discípulos que tenían un interés en seguirlo: "Vengan y lo verán".
