Dear Friends and Colleagues,

We are very pleased and honored to welcome you to the 2nd Annual Muhammad Ali Center Athletes and Social Change Forum!

This year again, we aim to make this an innovative conference that will advance education, advocacy and research on the role and contribution of athletes toward and within social change, human rights and development. The challenge was taken on by a diverse group of practitioners, academics, athletes, and activists, who will explore what it means for athletes to engage in social change, philanthropy and work within the community.

This year’s areas of focus are: 1. The roles and responsibilities athletes have beyond the playing eld2. The ways athletes can serve as educators and advocates to address social problems within and outside of sports3. How the global sporting community encourages or discourages athletes working in the realm of social change4. The roles educational institutions play in providing grounding for athletes to make the connections between athletics, academics and the community5. The role and impact of media in how athletes can aect social change.

Within through the many presentations, there will discussions about the role of the athlete in society as a way of motivating and training individuals about values. In the presentation spaces and outside of them, there will be reections on the even greater potential that lies at the intersection of athletes and social change. And aer the two-days of the forum, we will all leave with the challenge of activating and transforming what we have learned here into philanthropic endeavors and other meaningful work within the community. It must not be forgotten that the outcomes on the eld of play are not nearly as meaningful as the impact people in sport can have on communities in need.

Whether you are here at the 2nd Annual Muhammad Ali Center Athletes and Social Change Forum as a presenter, an attendee, or a volunteer, we are grateful for your participation and your involvement. We hope that these two days will be engaging and productive for you, and will motivate more thoughts and actions on this area of practice and scholarship that can touch so many lives.
