Life CycleDuring decades of use in arear-ventilated claddingsystem, ALUCOBOND®

protects the building fromweathering and the harmfuleffects caused by industrialand environmental pollution. Advantages:• Lower maintenance costs• Long-term preservation of

the building structure

An external cladding systemusing ALUCOBOND®, acts as abarrier against solar radiation. The ventilated space between theALUCOBOND® and the wall or thethermal insulation (in climateswhich require additionalinsulation material) reduces theheat transmission.Advantages:• In winter: savings in

heating cost• In summer: savings

in air-conditioning cost

The rear-ventilated claddingsystem protects the wall ofthe building from high andrapid temperature fluctuations.Advantages:• Reduction of thermal

expansion/contraction• Reduction in crack

formation

Moisture can pass throughthe wall. The building structure keepsdry.

RecyclingALUCOBOND® is fully recyclable, i.e.both the core material and thealuminium cover sheets are recycledand can be used in the production ofnew material.

Image-building DesignExteriors are more attractive and moredurable when clad with ALUCOBOND®.Style, elegant surfaces, exclusive corporatecolours and outstanding constructiondetails will create long lasting impressions.ALUCOBOND® is the perfect material if yourorganisation wants to create a new image.

ALUCOBOND® is unbeatable when it comesto colour consistency, excellent formability, flatness, rigidity, weather resistance andease of maintenance. Whether a corporateoffice, a public building or a modern home,a creative design using ALUCOBOND® willmake heads turn for many years to come. You won’t find a better choice.

Page 12: Alcan Composite

Flowing ContoursDue to its composite structure,ALUCOBOND® can take on manydifferent shapes. It is almost like adifferent skin wrapping the buildingstructure. The panels can be bent, folded or shaped to form complex, flowing elements using simple, conventional tools and equipment. Its unique product features offerarchitects design options which arelimited only by their imagination.Smooth roof structures, curved roofedgings and attics, balustradesaround balconies, circular columnsand arches can easily be realized. Its perfect formability does not affectits stability and flatness. The highrigidity of the panel remains. Whencompared with ALUCOBOND®,forming and shaping of any othermaterial to create the same structureof equal durability could only be doneat considerably higher cost. Specialcladding systems developed byALCAN COMPOSITES offer attractivelow-cost solutions. Curved elementsor column claddings are no problemfor the fabricators. We say “evenwhen ALUCOBOND® is curved, it isflat“ and it will remain flat for itsentire life-span. Whether you are planning a newbuilding or to refurbish an existingone, colourful surfaces and elegantdetails will give a building its ownindividual character.Using ALUCOBOND® will ensure thatit will last.

SVariety of ColoursFrom a wide range of standardcolours, customers can select bothmetallic and solid colours.Custom colours are available onrequest.

The gloss for solid and for metalliccolours is in the range of 30-40%according to Gardner Scale, which ismost suitable for architecturalapplications. For special effectcolours, the gloss is in the range of70-80% according to Gardner Scale.Due to their high gloss, panels coatedin special effect colours need specialcare in the design and duringfabrication and installation.

LacqueringALUCOBOND® surfaces are coatedusing exclusively high-quality lacquersystems which have an optimumresistance against the effects ofstrong solar radiation, weather andindustrial pollution. These propertiesare achieved by using UV resistantbonding agents. For standard finishes,Fluorpolymer (e.g. PVDF or PVF2) topcoats are used. The coating systemscombine good formability andexcellent surface durability.

Alcan Singen GmbH apply all lacquer-based surface finishes in their own plantto the aluminium coil, prior to laminationinto a composite panel. They use acontinuous coil coating line which is basedon the latest technology. The multiplelayers of the coating are individually bakedat temperatures of between 200-260°C.

The composite structure of ALUCOBOND® - twoaluminium cover sheets and a plastic or mineralfilled core - results in an impressive strength-to-weight ratio, even when comparing large panelsizes. Despite its low weight, which makesALUCOBOND® easy to transport and handle inthe factory and on site, its rigidity and highstrength make it the most suitable material forexterior wall cladding. When properly designedand installed, ALUCOBOND® panels will keeptheir shape and remain flat for life, even whenexposed to extreme temperature changes.

Thermal insulating propertiesDue to its relatively thin andhomogeneous core, ALUCOBOND® isnot an insulation panel.

Temperature resistanceFrom -50° C to +80°C.

Rear ventilated ALUCOBOND® cladding considerably improves sound insulation. For example, the sound insulation of alight-weight concrete wall is double when clad with ALUCOBOND®. The loss factor (a measure for the acousticsound-damping behaviour) of ALUCOBOND® is approx. 6 times better than that of solid aluminium sheets.

Apply to thealuminium cover sheet only!

With serrated corner-joint orbutt-joint sections or clampedbetween special aluminiumextrusions.

The plastic core of ALUCOBOND® canbe hot-air welded using conventionalhot-air welding equipment and plasticfiller rod. Hot-air welding provides awater-tight joint for decorativepurpose only. It is not suitable forjoints where structural strength isrequired.

Use conventional wood,sheet-metal or machinescrews made of stainlesssteel. For exterior applications allow forthermal expansion and possiblebuilding movements.

ALUCOBOND® can be bent using aroll bending machine (pyramid orpinch rollers). To protect the surface finish ofALUCOBOND® during bending useonly polished rollers free of dents andother defects.

Bending is possible with a folding table ora bending press. Min. required inside radius:• For ALUCOBOND®: r = 10 x t• For ALUCOBOND® PLUS: r = 10 x t• For ALUCOBOND® A2: r = 25 x tt = panel thicknessTo protect the surface finish of ALUCOBOND®

during bending use padding strips. Thespring-back of ALUCOBOND® is greaterthan that of a solid aluminium sheet. To determine spring-back for serialproduction, make tests on sample panels.

ALUCOBOND® can be punched usingconventional sheet metal punchingmachines or manual notchers. Forclean cuts use sharp tools and dieswith minimal cutting clearance.Punching will cause a slight deflectionof the cut edge on the impact side.

Riveting is possible using solid or blindrivets with conventional riveting tool. Forexterior applications allow for thermalexpansion and possible building movements.

MethodA major feature of ALUCOBOND® is thepossibility to shape panels using a verysimple technique called the routing andfolding method. It enables a fabricator toproduce shapes of various kinds byhand, without the need for heavyequipment like folding machines orbreak presses.

A V-shaped or rectangular groove isrouted on the reverse side of theALUCOBOND® composite panel alongthe proposed folding edge, using adisk or end milling cutter. A thin layerof the core material should be left atthe base of the groove, i.e. on theinside of the outer cover sheet. Theuntouched outer cover sheet can nowbe bent manually, giving an exact andclean folding line which follows therouted groove. The outer radius of thefolded edge depends on the shape ofthe groove and its depth.

We recommend that the routing bedone using a panel saw equipped withALUCOBOND® grooving accessoriesor a specially designed portable sheetmilling machine. Conventional handrouters with suitable router bits canbe used for curves and for very small

jobs. For complicated shapes, a CNCmachining centre will providerepetitive accuracy and high output.

The routing and folding method canbe used for ALUCOBOND® compositepanels with all available standardsurface finishes.

AdvantagesThe convincing advantages of thisunique technique are: - Low investment cost- Simple fabrication technique which can

be learnt easily by unskilled workers- Folding can be done on site, saving

packing and transportation cost and reducing damage caused in transit

- Low-cost fabrication of shapedcomponents used in fascia and wallcladding, roof edgings, column cladding, flashings, etc.

- Flexibility in creating shapes- Very economical, without

compromising on quality - Shapes are not limited by machine capacity- Components can be easily

fabricated and fitted on site

BenefitsThe fabrication of shaped componentsusing ALUCOBOND® only requires aminimal investment outlay. Handrouters and sheet milling machinesare inexpensive and can be usedeither in the workshop or on site. The fabrication of shapes in largerquantities is particularly economicalusing vertical panel saws equippedwith ALUCOBOND® groovingaccessories.
