Ein Solitär auf dem Dach
Das ehemalige Fabrikationsgebäude
Mattenstrasse 90 in Biel wird heute von
mehreren Gewerbe- und Dienstleistungs-
firmen genutzt. Der Wunsch der Agentur
erdmannpeisker nach mehr Nutzfläche
konnte mit einem Dachaufbau auf dem
Kopfbau realisiert werden.
Der stark von der Dachkante zurückge-
setzte Baukörper wirkt mit seinen ge-
rundeten Kanten und der einheitlichen
Fassaden- und Dachbekleidung aus
walzmatten ALUCOBOND® Platten wie
ein nur temporär abgesetztes Möbel.
Die beiden auskragenden Erker ver-
klammern das Raumobjekt mit dem
Dach, was die Bodenhaftung zumindest
optisch wieder herstellt.
In der Innenansicht verlieren sich die
Konturen der großzügig verglasten,
komplett weiß gehaltenen Räumlich-
keiten im Ausblick auf die Stadt Biel
sowie die nahe Jurakette.
Trotz der latenten Transzendenz des
Objekts, ist es ein Subjekt, das in der Nut-
zung eine metaphorische Begeg nung mit
der eigenen Nebensächlich keit erfährt.
Es wird instrumentalisiert.

Un solitaire sur la toiture
L’ancienne usine de Mattenstrasse 90
à Bienne est utilisée aujourd’hui par dif-
férents métiers et sociétés de services.
Le souhait de l’agence erdmannpeisker
était de pouvoir réaliser une plus grande
surface d’utilisation avec une construction
sur toiture à la tête du bâtiment.
Le corps du bâtiment placé en recul du
bord de toit ressemble, avec ses bords
arrondis, ses façades uniformes et son
re vêtement de toiture en ALUCOBOND®
mat de laminage, à un meuble posé
temporairement. Les deux encorbelle-
ments en saillie raccordent l’ensemble
du volume à la toiture, qui de ce fait,
du moins optiquement, donne cette
accroche au sol.
Vu de l’intérieur, se perdent les contours
des vastes surfaces vitrées et la blan-
cheur des locaux, avec la vue sur la ville
de Biel et de la proximité de la chaîne
montagneuse du Jura.
Malgré la transparence latente de l’objet,
il est un sujet, qui de par son utilisation,
ne permet pas d’en réaliser la portée.
Il est instrumentalisé.
A solitaire on the roof
Today the former factory building Matten-
strasse 90 in Biel (Switzerland) is used
by several trade and service companies.
The request for more floor space by the
agency erdmannpeisker was achieved
through an additional level built on top
of the main building.
The new structure is recessed away from
the edge of the pre-existing roof. The
rounded edges and the uniform cladding
of roof and façade with ALUCOBOND®
in mill-finish confer the impression of a
temporary structure. However, the two
cantilevered gazebos visually reassure
the viewer that the new structure is
firmly anchored in place.
The interior design is completely white
and the structure uses expansive sheets
of glass. Both design elements serve to
blend the tenant’s environment into the
surrounding town of Biel and the nearby
Jura Mountains.
Ironically, the building’s function is vitally
important, but its design is subtle and
transparent, almost hidden.

wasser und mehr als hunderttausend
Tieren, wurde das Georgia-Aquarium
in Atlanta, Georgia im November 2005
als weltgrößtes seiner Art eröffnet.
Gemäß den Ausführungen der Architek-
ten Thompson, Ventulett, Stainback &
Associates (TVS) soll die „Architektur die
Beziehung der Menschheit zu den Welt-
meeren darstellen“. Das einzigartige Profil
einer abstrahierten Arche aus Metall und
Glas erhielt einen erhöhten Anlegeplatz,
sodass der erleuchtete Schiffsrumpf schon
vom Centennial Park im Zentrum Atlantas
auszumachen ist, erläutern die Architekten.
Hervorgehoben wird dieser Anblick durch ca.
4 600 m² ALUCOBOND® und ALUCOBOND®
PLUS in den Farben Platinum, Silbermetallic
und Blaumetallic, die zur Verkleidung des
Gebäudes eingesetzt wurden. An Bord
dieses imaginär seetüchtigen Schiffes
gehen die Besucher, indem sie unterhalb
des Vorschiffes eintreten, um daraufhin
eine „Welt ohne Wände“ vorzufinden.
Man treibt durch fünf verschiedene Un-
terwasserwelten, kreiert, um „die Ima-
gination zu stimulieren und die Sinne der
Menschheit in Bezug auf die Bedeutung
der Ozeane zu schärfen“. Das Leitmotiv
des Georgia-Aquariums – Unterhaltung,
Erziehung und Wissenschaftliche Insti-
tution – wird durch Ausstellungen und
Programme auf höchstem Niveau umge-
setzt. Die aquatische Attraktion bereitet
anregende, unterhaltsame Erfahrungen
und wirbt für die weltweite Erhaltung der
Artenvielfalt unter Wasser.
Key to the design of the Georgia Aquarium is “architecture meant to reflect
the relationship between mankind and the world’s oceans,” according to
a highlight statement by Atlanta-based Thompson, Ventulett, Stainback &
Associates (TVS) regarding its architectural design.
The unique metal-and-glass exterior profile of the aquarium, designed in the
abstracted shape of an ark, is sited to allow its lanterned ship’s hull to be
highly visible from Centennial Park in downtown Atlanta, according to TVS.
To help achieve this look, approximately 50 000 square feet of ALUCOBOND®
and ALUCOBOND® PLUS Material in Platinum, Silver Metallic and a custom
Blue Metallic were installed as exterior cladding.
Visitors disembark this imaginary seaworthy craft by entering the aquarium
under the ship’s bow. There they encounter a TVS-described “world
without walls,” featuring five underwater-themed exhibits designed
to “stimulate the imagination, reflecting what the world’s oceans
mean to mankind.”
The mission of the Georgia Aquarium is to be an enter-
taining, educational and scientific institution featuring
exhibitions and programs of the highest standards,
offering engaging and entertaining visitors’
experiences, and promoting the con-
servation of aquatic biodiversity
throughout the world.

et de mer et abritant plus de cent
mille animaux, le Georgia Aquarium à
Atlanta / Géorgie a ouvert ses portes en
Novembre 2005 comme étant le plus
gros aquarium mondial de la sorte.
Selon les plans des architectes Thompson,
Ventulett, Stainback & Associates (TVS),
« l’architecture se doit de représenter
la relation entre l’homme et les mers
du monde ». Le profil unique d’une ar-
che abstraite faite de métal et de verre
se situe en position surélevée, si bien
qu’il est possible de distinguer la coque
éclairée à partir du Centennial Park au
centre-ville d’Atlanta. Environ 4 600 m²
d’ALUCOBOND® et ALUCOBOND® PLUS
en couleurs Platinum, Argent Métallique
et Bleu Métallique ont été requis dans
le revêtement de cette installation. Les
visiteurs pénètrent dans ce bateau ima-
ginaire en passant en dessous de la
proue pour y découvrir un « monde sans
parois ». Ils se promènent au sein de
5 paysages sous-marins différents, « ce
qui stimule leur imagination et permet
de souligner d’autant plus l’importance
du monde aquatique pour l’humanité ».
L’objectif du Georgia Aquarium en tant
qu’institution divertissante, éducative et
scientifique est de proposer des expo-
sitions et programmes à un niveau très
élevé. Cette attraction aquatique fournit
pour le visiteur des expériences stimu-
lantes et amusantes tout en proclamant
l’importance de la conservation de la
diversité des espèces mondiales.

A empresa ANA, SA responsável pela gestão, exploração e desenvolvimento
dos aeroportos portugueses, tomou a cargo esse projecto. A nova aerogare
abriu ao público no último trimestre de 2005. A obra de ampliação foi feita
a partir do terminal de passageiros existente construindo-se um andar su-
perior actualmente reservado ás partidas. Todo este trabalho foi efectuado
com o aeroporto sempre em funcionamento.
A Martifer Alumínio interveio activamente em algumas soluções inovadoras
nomeadamente na concepção duma fachada suspensa, que se resume a um
plano de vidro com sombreadores suspensos. A intervenção passa sobretudo
por coberturas e tectos falsos em ALUCOBOND®, clarabóias em alumínio
e spider glass. O ALUCOBOND® está presente por toda a parte no aeroporto,
quase sempre com fixações ocultas. Salientamos a magnífica cobertura do
edifício, com expressivas formas executadas tendo como base facilidade de
manipulação, rigidez e baixo peso do painel. Também importantes são os
tectos falsos do novo piso superior, onde o ALUCOBOND® mostra bem como
é plano, em comparação com outros materiais existentes. A todas estas so-
luções arrojadas e complexas do projecto, respondeu a excelente capacidade
técnica dos nossos parceiros envolvidos nesta prestigiante referência. Com
este novo aeroporto, Portugal aproxima-se ainda mais do mundo.

The Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport is
located in the heart of the industrial
north of the country, 11 km from the
city of Oporto, making it a significant
access point to this valuable commer-
cial area. Having undergone intense
renovation work, the Francisco Sá
Carneiro Airport now receives passen-
gers and other users comfortably and
efficiently, taking on the role of primary
travel hub for the north-western corner
of the Iberian Peninsula.
The existing passengers‘ terminal re-
mained in continuous operation while a
new departure zone was erected on top.
Innovative design and workmanship by
”Martifer Aluminio“ led to a ”suspender
façade“ consisting of glass with suspended
shades. The company also executed the

am innovativen Design der Glasfassade
mit. Ebenso realisierten sie die Verar-

light-weight panels. With its exemplary
flatness, ALUCOBOND® contrasts well
with the other materials used for the
false ceilings. The bold and complex
architecture, along with the fabricator‘s
excellent technical craftsmanship have
turned this ordinary airport into a regional
landmark. With the inception of the new
terminal in the third quarter of 2005,
Portugal is quickly becoming a gateway
to the rest of the world.

In 2004, the town of the Neuilly-sur-
Seine unveiled its new public swim-
ming pool, transformed into a true
recreation centre.
This facility’s design is bold and daring,
yet at the same time, integrates beauti-
fully with the surrounding environment.
The marriage of sand stone, aluminium
com posite roofing, and glass curtain wall
compliments the design traditionally found
in the neighbouring buildings. However,
the centre distinguishes itself with a
3 000 m² roof designed in the shape of
a wave, in sharp contrast with the right-
angled walls of the building. The curves
of this wave reflect the aquatic nature of
the centre, without obstructing the view
of the surrounding buildings. The shape
had to be perfectly smooth, without

ginalität des Bauwerks erwächst aus
der Form des 3 000 m²-großen Daches,

Wellenbewegung zu den geradlinigen,
scharfkantigen Wänden der Fassade
in direktem Kontrast steht. Die wogen-
artige Gestaltung unterstreicht dabei
die aquatische Bestimmung, hemmt
keineswegs die Betrachtung der an-
edges or visible ventilation, and utilize
a suitable colour. ALUCOBOND®’s abil-
ity to deliver sweeping curves for the
roof edge coupled with ALUCORE®’s
sturdy honeycomb panel for the roof
surface provided the ideal solution. Tim
Composites successfully fabricated and
installed the 1 645 panels with precision.
Adjustable clamps ranging from 15 to
20 cm were mounted as intermediate
supports to which the ALUCOBOND®
and ALUCORE® panels were riveted.
The most challenging feat was to find
the proper angle for the curved panels
on the roof’s edge; these pieces dic-
tated the seaming pattern for the entire
roof’s surface.

richtigen Winkel für den abgerundeten
Dachabschluss zu justieren, um den
Schwung und die Form der gesamten
Dachkonstruktion zu Ende zu führen.

soucieuse d‘une intégration réussie dans l‘environnement urbain. Le mariage
de la pierre mince, du composite d‘aluminium en toiture et du mur-rideau
en verre, a permis de ne pas rompre outre mesure avec les constructions
avoisinantes. L’originalité du bâtiment réside cependant dans la forme de la
toiture de 3 000 m² qui s‘inspire du mouvement de la vague, en contraste
avec: les parois droites et anguleuses du bâtiment. Les courbes de cette
vague sont la pour accentuer le caractère aquatique du lieu, Sans dénaturer
la vue dont dispose les immeubles aIentours.
La forme devait être parfaitement lisse, sans promontoire ni extracteur d‘air
visible et d‘une couleur agréable. L‘ ALUCOBOND® pour les rives cintrées
intelligemment associe avec des panneaux plus rigides en nid d‘abeille de
type ALUCORE® pour la surtoiture, ont offert une réponse idéale.
Le façonnier Tim Composites a su dimensionner avec précision chacun des
1 645 panneaux. S‘en est suivi un travail tout aussi précis de mise en œuvre.
En partant des rives cintrées, les couvreurs ont posés des plots réglables de
15 a 20 cm de hauteur, une structure intermédiaire sur laquelle les panneaux
ALUCORE® et ALUCOBOND® ont été rivetés. La principale difficulté a été de
trouver le bon angle pour les pièces arrondies du bord de la toiture, car c‘est
celui-ci qui a dicté l’élan de la forme de toute la surface a couvrir.

Le séjour au nouveau Grange City
Hotel situé juste à droite de la Tour
de Londres alloue un goût réel de
l’ancien et du nouveau Londres.
Il s’agit d’un projet de prestige, les
Grange Hotels avec déjà huit hôtels
de luxe au centre ville. Le potentiel de
l’ancien bâtiment de bureaux fut reconnu
en 1999 après une étude de faisabilité.
Avec la permission de planification en
Mai 2000, la construction commença
à la fin de l’année 2000. La structure
existante de 12 niveaux fut d’abord
réduite à la base pour ensuite l’éten-
dre en partie basse avec un nouveau
restaurant et centre de conférence et
en partie haute avec plus de cham-
bres. Buchanan Associates ont décidé
d’utiliser ALUCOBOND® en blanc pour
revêtir la partie haute du bâtiment. Le
choix du matériau est important pour

tekten. Die Genehmigung wurde im Mai
2000 erteilt, der Bau begann bereits Ende
des Jahres. Das bestehende 12-stöckige
Gebäude wurde bis auf die Grundsubstanz
demontiert. Die Erweiterung erfolgte verti-
kal durch den Ausbau der Zimmerkapazität
und horizontal mit neuem Restaurant und
Konferenzräumen. Buchanan Associates
ent schieden sich für ALUCOBOND® in
weiß zur Verkleidung der oberen Stock-
werke des Gebäudes. Die Materialauswahl
ist bei jedem Projekt entscheidend, aber

l’architecte, le maître-d’oeuvre et Alcan
Composites. Après finition de la première
phase de construction, l’hôtel ouvrit ses
portes en mai 2002. L’extension, égale-
ment réalisée en ALUCOBOND® a été
accomplie en Septembre 2005.

planes Bild schaffen würden, was beson-
ders aufgrund der Material-Kombination
mit hochwertigem Portland-Stein und
poliertem Granit ausschlaggebend war.

im Grunde auf der engen Zusammenarbeit
zwischen Architekt, Bauherr und Alcan
Composites. Nach Beendigung der ersten
Bauphase eröffnete das Hotel im Mai
2002. Die ebenfalls mit ALUCOBOND®
verkleidete Erweiterung wurde im Sep-
tember 2005 fertiggestellt.
It is a flagship of Grange Hotels, who already run eight luxury hotels in central
London. The potential of the former office building was identified in 1999,
followed by the feasibility studies of the architects. Planning permission
was received in May 2000, Construction started in late 2000. The existing
12 storey building was stripped back to its basic structure and extended both at
high level for bedrooms and podium level for a new restaurant and conference
centre. Buchanan Associates decided to use white ALUCOBOND® to clad the
upper levels of the building. The choice of cladding material is important for any
project but even more for this project with its prominent position and such a
famous architectural neighbour. Architect Dean Buchanan said: We had used
ALUCOBOND® on two previous developments for Grange Hotels and being
very satisfied with the results, we decided to use the same tried and tested
material again. We knew we would get a very flat and crisp appearance, and
that was particularly important as we were combining the ALUCOBOND®
with high quality Portland stone and polished granite. Laser Claddings’ Stuart
Davis added: The successful completion of this prestigious cladding project
was due very much to the close relationship we have with the architect, client
and Alcan Composites.
The first phase of the work was completed and the hotel opened, in May 2002. The
extension also clad in ALUCOBOND®, was completed in September 2005.

La Chine change rapidement – surtout
la silhouette urbaine de Shanghai.
La toute nouvelle « vedette » à Pudong
est la China Executive Leadership Aca-
demy. Le campus étendu sur 40 hectares
est la liaison parfaite du passé, du présent
et du futur de la Chine. Le dessin est
inspiré par l’association traditionnelle
de la Chine avec la couleur rouge et le
confucianisme. L’architecte Anthony
Bechu explique : « La ligne sur laquelle
l’université est installée, ressemble à
l’idéologie de Confucius. Les étudiants
communient avec le maître et le suivent
sur la ligne – une ligne rouge dans le
paysage. Le Rouge est la couleur la
plus importante dans l’idée de la Chine
et indique la joie, le drapeau national,
la révolution, mais il représente aussi
les structures de l’ancienne Chine. »

in Pudong ist die China Executive Leader-
ship Academy. Der ausgedehnte 40-Hektar

und Zukunft. Das Design ist inspiriert von
der traditionellen Verbindung Chinas zur
Farbe Rot und dem Konfuzianismus. Der
Architekt Anthony Bechu erklärt: „Die
Ausrichtung der Universitätsgebäude
gleicht der Lehre von Konfuzius. Die
Schüler treffen auf den Lehrmeister und
folgen ihm entlang der Linie, einer roten
Linie in der Landschaft. Rot ist die wich-
tigste Farbe in Chinas Gedankengut und
deutet auf Freude, die Nationalflagge, die
Revolution hin, aber es steht auch für die
Struktur des alten China.“ Architekt Tom
L’architecte Tom Sheenan ajoute : « La
ville est mesurée par son aspect vertical.
Nous avons voulu ajouter du nouveau en
donnant une dimension horizontale à la
ville. » Dans la culture chinoise la table
rouge est l’endroit où le maître enseigne
à l’élève, ce que l’on peut trouver dans
l’architecture du bâtiment principal frap-
pant par sa toiture en saillie rouge brillant.
Pour achever les caractéristiques archi-
tecturales, la fonction et la performance
remarquable, des panneaux ALUCORE®
en 20 mm d’épaisseur ont été choisis à
cause de leur parfaite planéité et de leur
haute rigidité. Installés au dessus du
premier toit étanche, ALUCORE® offre
la solution parfaite pour créer un revête-
ment robuste et attractif. Le système à
jointures ouvertes donne assez d’espace
pour une ventilation arrière effective et
une drainage de l’eau.

der Architektur des Hauptgebäudes mit
dem glänzend roten, auskragenden Dach.
Um die geforderte Architektur, Funktion
und beachtliche Ausdrucksfähigkeit zu
erreichen, wurde rotes ALUCORE® in
20 mm Dicke aufgrund der absoluten
Planheit und hohen Biegesteifigkeit
ausgewählt. Mit der Installation oberhalb
des wasserdichten Primärdaches ist
ALUCORE® die beste Lösung für eine
robuste und attraktive Verkleidung. Die
Konstruktion mit offenen Fugen lässt
genügend Raum für effektive Hinter-
lüftung und Drainage.
Pudong‘s latest architectural highlight is the China Executive Leadership
Academy. The sprawling 40-hectare campus is the perfect fusion of China‘s
past, present and future. The design is inspired by the traditional Chinese
association with the color red and by elements of Confucianism. Architect
Anthony Bechu says: “The layout of the university buildings resembles the
theory of Confucius. The students meet the instructor and follow him in a line,
represented by a red line on the landscape. Because red is the most important
color in the mind of China. It‘s happiness, it‘s the flag, it‘s the revolution, but
also it‘s the structure of the old building of the empire of China.” Architect
Tom Sheenan adds: “It‘s a city that‘s measured by its vertical dimension.
Our desire was to make a new urbanism on the site and to add a horizontal
dimension to the city.”
In Chinese culture the red table is where the master teaches the student
– something reflected in the architecture of the main building, which features
a bright red overhanging roof.
To achieve the designed architectural features, function and remarkable per-
formance, 20 mm thick ALUCORE® panels in red colour were chosen due
to their absolute flatness and extremely high rigidity. Installed on top of the
watertight primary roof, ALUCORE® panels offer the best solution to create a
robust and attractive cladding; the applied open joint system creates enough
space for an effective rear ventilation and water drainage.

Ein Solitär auf dem Dach
Das ehemalige Fabrikationsgebäude
Mattenstrasse 90 in Biel wird heute von
mehreren Gewerbe- und Dienstleistungs-
firmen genutzt. Der Wunsch der Agentur
erdmannpeisker nach mehr Nutzfläche
konnte mit einem Dachaufbau auf dem
Kopfbau realisiert werden.
Der stark von der Dachkante zurückge-
setzte Baukörper wirkt mit seinen ge-
rundeten Kanten und der einheitlichen
Fassaden- und Dachbekleidung aus
walzmatten ALUCOBOND® Platten wie
ein nur temporär abgesetztes Möbel.
Die beiden auskragenden Erker ver-
klammern das Raumobjekt mit dem
Dach, was die Bodenhaftung zumindest
optisch wieder herstellt.
In der Innenansicht verlieren sich die
Konturen der großzügig verglasten,
komplett weiß gehaltenen Räumlich-
keiten im Ausblick auf die Stadt Biel
sowie die nahe Jurakette.
Trotz der latenten Transzendenz des
Objekts, ist es ein Subjekt, das in der Nut-
zung eine metaphorische Begeg nung mit
der eigenen Nebensächlich keit erfährt.
Es wird instrumentalisiert.

Un solitaire sur la toiture
L’ancienne usine de Mattenstrasse 90
à Bienne est utilisée aujourd’hui par dif-
férents métiers et sociétés de services.
Le souhait de l’agence erdmannpeisker
était de pouvoir réaliser une plus grande
surface d’utilisation avec une construction
sur toiture à la tête du bâtiment.
Le corps du bâtiment placé en recul du
bord de toit ressemble, avec ses bords
arrondis, ses façades uniformes et son
re vêtement de toiture en ALUCOBOND®
mat de laminage, à un meuble posé
temporairement. Les deux encorbelle-
ments en saillie raccordent l’ensemble
du volume à la toiture, qui de ce fait,
du moins optiquement, donne cette
accroche au sol.
Vu de l’intérieur, se perdent les contours
des vastes surfaces vitrées et la blan-
cheur des locaux, avec la vue sur la ville
de Biel et de la proximité de la chaîne
montagneuse du Jura.
Malgré la transparence latente de l’objet,
il est un sujet, qui de par son utilisation,
ne permet pas d’en réaliser la portée.
Il est instrumentalisé.
A solitaire on the roof
Today the former factory building Matten-
strasse 90 in Biel (Switzerland) is used
by several trade and service companies.
The request for more floor space by the
agency erdmannpeisker was achieved
through an additional level built on top
of the main building.
The new structure is recessed away from
the edge of the pre-existing roof. The
rounded edges and the uniform cladding
of roof and façade with ALUCOBOND®
in mill-finish confer the impression of a
temporary structure. However, the two
cantilevered gazebos visually reassure
the viewer that the new structure is
firmly anchored in place.
The interior design is completely white
and the structure uses expansive sheets
of glass. Both design elements serve to
blend the tenant’s environment into the
surrounding town of Biel and the nearby
Jura Mountains.
Ironically, the building’s function is vitally
important, but its design is subtle and
transparent, almost hidden.
