The style of this building is ItalianThis was a popular style in the USthe 1870s. It was popular due to

fact that it knew no class boundThese buildings could be constru

with many different types of maand be adapted to many differebudgets. Some commoncharacteristics of the Italianate sinclude over hanging eaves withcorbels, balustrade balconies in

case wrought iron, windows withmoldings and bay windows. The

buildings had a tall appearanceanywhere between 2-4 stories.(Architecture) Most of these

characteristics can be seen in thbuilding.



Concept Statement

! The Donahue home will be a peaceful and relaxing

space. The main living space will include some divisionsto keep distractions to a minimum but still allow for aclean line of sight. Soft and muted colors, furniture withsimple, curved lines and patterns with simple organicfloral motifs will be used throughout the house to create calming space for William in the Art Nouveau style Jennyloves

401.2.1 Existing Materials. Materials already in use in a building in

compliance with requirements or approvals in effect at the time of

their erection or installation shall be permitted to remain in use

unless determined by the building offical to be unsafe per section

The existing structure should conform to this code to keep all inhabitants safe. If a material has

been deemed hazardous by today's codes and standards, then it needs to be removed. A prime

example of this is absestos. If it is found in any building today, it is removed due to its hazardous

Level 2 alterations to existing buildings or structures are permitted

without requiring the entire building or structure to comply with the

energy requirements of the International Energy Conservation Code

Model Analysis! The study model shows an accurate rendition of the Donahue’s office. The

French doors on the North wall will allow light from all of the windows into tliving area, The furniture placement works nicely with the space and will afor easy movement around all the pieces.

! Adding artwork to all the empty walls will help add symmetry to all of the

windows on the South wall.

! The furniture pieces chosen seem to be a good fit and have good scale fo

this space. They fill up the space while still allowing mobility around them.

It is nice to see the furniture at its scale to see how it will look and function ithe space.

Justification of Solution!

The design concept for this project took into account the client’spreferred design style of Art Nouveau, the function of the spacesand the fact that her son has autism. The goals of this project werecreate a relaxing space for Jenny and her son, William. There need

to be a space for Jenny to work on her hobby of scrapbooking. Shalso wanted a place to display all of her medals from running race

! The final outcome of this project addresses all of these goals. Mutecolors were chosen for the walls to not be overpowering for Williamand these also stayed within the art nouveau design style. The fab

chosen did not have loud and distracting patterns on them. Anypatterned fabric kept to a botanical, foliage or organic theme. Aroomy living space with ample seating and a rocking chair for Williawas created, along with a more feminine, relaxing master bedroom



Justification of Solution cont’d! When designing this space it was important to factor in William’

autism. There are many design elements that can be used tocreate a relaxing space for him. Muted colors, minimal pattern

and cork floors were a few of these key elements.

! Schematic plans were helpful in designing this space. Anytimespace is reviewed multiple times from multiple angles helps mait a better space. Some of the furniture pieces ended up beingomitted or moved to create ample room for people to move

around the space. These plans also helped to see if the chosenfurniture was to the correct scale for the space. Clear andspacious pathways around furniture make a room easier to



Reflection! There were many aspects of design that I learned in this class but I

think the most important thing I learned was how to research and information on items I didn’t know a lot about. I think the ability toidentify different architecture styles and how their style can impac

the interior style of a space is an important aspect of interior desigHaving to research and learn about different human factors is veryimportant as well. There are many things in design that can help oworsen a certain situation. As designers, we need to be consideraof these factors when design spaces. For example, my client had son with autism. It was important for me to research design and

autism. One thing I learned was that cork flooring has the ability toabsorb sounds and is a good choice for someone with autism.Normally I would have probably chosen a hard wood floor for aspace like this, but a simple change to cork flooring will have a
