HistoryMcDowell Hospital was established in 1930. In the 1940’s, healthcare needs had outgrown the facility’s potential, prompting construction of a new 50-bed hospital. Again in 1983, McDowell Hospital relocated to its current site,

housing 65 private patient care beds. Located on a 50-acre tract within the city limits, the hospital was designed for maximum efficiency and ease of future expansion. Since then, expansions include the Health Plus Rural Health Clinic, the county’s first fixed-based MRI facility, Emergency Department expansion, an infusion center, and physician practices in Glenwood, Marion, Nebo, Old Fort and Burke County. Embarking on a $45 million facility replacement project in the fall of 2015, the new McDowell Hospital will be open in 2018.

New Facility ProjectMission Health is investing more than $45 million in the McDowell Hospital campus to ensure the continuation of health care services in a modern facility. The new facility will feature expanded emergency room services, larger inpatient rooms and state-of-the-art equipment. The campus will provide a focus on outpatient care and a continuation of health care services that support our regional network of care and ensure access to care in a sustainable manner.

Project Features• Groundbreaking October 27, 2015• Scheduled completion in 2017• 69,703-square-foot hospital will be built in front of

the existing hospital, which will be demolished after construction is complete

• Additional 38,615-square-foot medical office building• 30 inpatient beds will include 5 designated labor and

delivery suites and 25 inpatient rooms• 3 inpatient/outpatient operating rooms with 1

C-Section room• 12 pre- and post-operative bays• Expanded Emergency Department with 15 bays,

including 2 trauma bays• Parking area will be flat, allowing easier patient access

Community BenefitsSince 1983, hospital building codes have changed. While renovation was considered, the cost of remodeling was significant and comparable to building a new facility. The new state-of-the-art facility will enhance safety, efficiency of care and the patient-family experience. The new hospital will focus on the shift to outpatient services.

Emergency ServicesFocused on patient flow in the Emergency Room, the number of bays will increase from 11 to 15. Capacity for patient volume surges will be built in. For behavioral health patients, a safe area will provide care while the patient awaits transfer. Our goal is to provide timely access to care.
