ometimes our approach tolife stops us from countingour blessings and giving

    thanksgiving to God. Psycholo-

gists call this pessimism. It is thebelief that bad events will under-m i n e e v e r y t h i n g t h e ydo. (Seligman, 1990). It is likealways seeing the cup half emp-ty. Those with optimism, con-fronted with hard knocks ap-proach them as a challenge and tryharder. Optimists tend to see thecup half full. They are thankfulfor what they have and work hard-

    er.Common to our American na-

tional heritage is the action of ourfirst president, George Washington

who in 1789 declared a nationalthanksgiving holiday honoring thenewly ratified Constitution, pro-claiming: the people could thankGod for "affording them an oppor-tunity peaceably to establish aform of government for their safe-ty and happiness."

Thanksgiving is part of manyreligious traditions: St. Paul toldthe Romans (14:5-6): One man

esteems one day as better than an

other, while another man esteemall days alike. Let every one bfully convinced in his own minHe who observes the day, observeit in honor of the Lord. He alswho eats, eats in honor of thLord, since he gives thanks tGod; The psalmist tells us: Athy works shall give thanks to theO Lord, and all thy saints shabless thee! (Ps 145:10). The Korastates: "And He gives you all thye ask for. But if you count th

favors of God, never would you bable to number them" (14:34). Native American Iroquois thankgiving prayer ends with the wordwe return thanks to the GreSpirit, in whom is embodied agoodness, and who directs athings for the good of his chidren.

Some have taken the words oDeuteronomy (26:10) I bring thfirst of the fruit of the groun

which thou, O Lord, hast giveme. And you shall set it down before the Lord your God, and woship before the Lord your Godand applied this as an offering tGod of themselves. They forgbeing with family and friends angive themselves to others in neeserving in food kitchens and thlike.

However we commemorathis "Holyday," let us see the ful

ness of the cup of gifts God hagiven us, and be thankful prayingGlory to thee, who hast called mto life, revealed to us the beautof the universe Glory to thee God in ages!

For all practical purposes, Thanksgiving Day is the closestwe come to a national holy day in the United States. His-torically, it has been celebrated with everything from reli-

gious thankfulness, food, frolic and of course moderncommercialism. Despite this, it is still a time for many

Americans to count their blessings and get together withfamily and/or friends.

    Euromaidan a year later

was late evening on November 21,2013, the Feast of the Archangel Mi-

chael, when I received a phone call froma young journalist to join students gath-ering on Independence Square in Kyiv. I

has just returned from the premiere of Virko Be-leys opera production commemorating the 80than-niversary of the Holodomor Famine, Stalins politi-cally orchestrated act of genocide against theUkrainian people. I informed my young colleaguethat due to the late hour, I would miss the subwayconnection to the citys center. Ill join you tomor-row morning, dont worry, was my response. Therevolution had begun, and on feast day of St. Mi-

chael the patron of Kyiv.President Viktor Yanu-kovych lied to his people. He, andthe members of his Party of Re-gions, promised that an associationagreement with the European Unionwould be signed in Vilnius, Lithuania on Novemberthe 28th. Months of public briefings, press releases, meetings with commissioners from Brussels, at-tempts to reform corrupt practices in Ukraines par-

liament, fueled the belief that Yanukovych reallyhad plans to sign the agreement and steer

Ukraines course towards Europe. This was noth-ing but a sham, just empty promises. The truth ofthe matter was that Ukraines corrupt elite wantedto continue to fill their pockets with as much stolenmoney as they took. Yanukovych thought that hecould fool the people, that no one would stand upto him, and that his future was secure. However, itwas the youngest generation of Ukrainians, stu-dents, who stood up and challenged their corruptpresident. The revolution had begun.

It rained all day on the 22nd of November.I stood on the Maidan for hours, and would period-

ically go warm up and get a cup ofcoffee. People kept coming andgoing, Vitaliy Klitschko and otherprominent political figures spoke, there was talk of a national strike. The rain poured and pools of water

on Independence Square got bigger and bigger. Was the rain a sympathetic response from theheavens, an indication of human tears that wouldbe shed during the upcoming months? I wondered.

In remembrance of the OrangeRevolution participants of thisgathering showed up wearingorange scarves, ties, and jack-ets. During the evening hoursvolunteers brought coffee, tea,

and sandwiches. People huddledunder plastic tarps or gatheredunder the Column (known asthe Stella) of Independence toprotect themselves from thedownpour. City workers startedto set up booths for a Christmasvillage and the frame for thisyears tree. It seemed as if therewas a plan to limit as muchspace as possible in order tocontain the growing number of

protestors.During the weeks andmonths that followed, the Mai-dan was transformed into a cita-del barricaded by walls of snowand ice, tires, and make shiftfencing. A chapel was set up inan army surplus tent. A stagewas built. City Hall wasstormed and taken over. All ofthis was fueled by the beating ofstudents and activists on twoseparate occasions. One of themost dramatic moments of the

revolution occurred when thespecial police units, known asBerkut, attempted to break upthe crowds of protestors whoran to St. Michaels Monasterywhere they were granted sanctu-ary by the abbot and allowed tosleep on the floor of the church.Ukrainians worldwide notedthat this was the first time thepeople of Kyiv sought sanctuaryin a church since the Mongolinvasion in 1240.

Our pastor, Father My-kola Buryadnyk and Father Ya-roslav Mendyuk joined the Mai-dan protest a few days after thisincident. Along with clergy ofother denominations, theybravely stood in front of the

Berkut forces creating a humanbarrier, praying intently in thehope that there would be no fur-ther attacks. These were defin-ing moments for the people ofUkraine, and for a new spiritu-ality to emerge; a spiritualitythat embraces freedom and self-determination. This is the spirit-uality that dominates Christs

teaching in the Sermon of theMount. Blessed are the peace-makers, for they shall be calledchildren of God. (MT: 5, 9)But, those in power opted formore violence instead of peace.

During the upcoming Christmasbreak, students from the UnitedStates and Canada flew to Kyivto join the protest and witnesshistory. Our parishioner, JulianHayda, initiated the EuromaidanJournalist Collective with hiscolleagues. They documentedthe events on film, interviewedactivists, and told the story tothe English speaking world.

    The Maidan protests

continued to grow. It was esti-mated that over 1 million peo-ple assembled on the Maidan atits highest point. Yanukovychwas becoming more and moreentrenched in his oppressivepolitics, and the president ofRussia, Vladimir Putin, is sus-pected of being directly com-plicit in sending the snipers whokilled over 100 protestors in thefinal days of February, 2014.Those who sacrificed their livesare now known as the H e a v e n l y H u n -dred. (Nebesnia Sotnia) It wasat that moment, at the momentof bloodshed, that the world be-gan to pay attention and mediaoutlets started to tell the story.

A narrative was emerg-ing. The 20th century Frenchphilosopher Michel Foucaultpresented the concept of apower discourse. Put simply,

history is written by those whohave won battles, built empires, and suppressed others. Thoseoppressed do not have themeans or the opportunity to pre-sent their discourse and theirhistory. We have all experi-enced the frustration of trying toconvince others that we haveour own language, culture, and

history. Sadly, many continue tobelieve that we are Russians. Our discourse is emerging, butthe price is one of extreme sac-rifice; the loss of human lives.

    Tyrants die and empires

fall apart. The Roman Empirecrumbled as the blood of thefollowers of Christ gave witnessto the God of love and peace.Once again, our clergy minis-tered to the needs of the survi-

vors of violence: the familymembers of those murdered incold blood and the activists whowere hospitalized. Once againFather Mykola Buryadnyk trav-eled to Kyiv. Father Volodymyr

Kushnir accompanied him. Dur-ing their visit, they broughtprayers of consolation to thosein need and extended words ofsupport and hope from the faith-ful of our St. Joseph the Be-

trothed Parish in Chicago.Let us continue to be

mindful of the needs of theUkrainian people especiallyduring the celebration ofThanksgiving. Putins invasionpf Ukraine continues. In time

we will begin to witness ac-counts of the deaths of the citi-zens of the Crimea and the Don-bas region in eastern Ukraine.Thankful for the freedomswhich we take for granted in theUnited States, we should remainfaithful to the gospel teachingthat a faith without works isdead. (James 2: 5, 14)

The year was 1959. The placewas St. Vladimir's College, a minor

seminary, run by the RedemptoristFathers. I was in Grade 11. With 49other students, I listened to thisJewish Ukrainian speak. He praisedone of the greatest European prel-ates of the century, MetropolitanAndrei Sheptytsky, who headed theUkrainian Catholic Church fornearly 50 years until his death onNov. 1, 1944.

I had never heard of Sheptytskybefore. I was just a farm kid from

Grandview, Manitoba. And yet herewas Kurt Lewin, a Holocaust survi-vor, a Haganah commander duringthe siege of Jerusalem, an IsraeliArmy officer, the great-grandson ofIsaac Schmelkes -- a rabbi of Lvivstill revered by orthodox Jewry as aspiritual and intellectual giant --telling me about his Ukrainian sav-iour!

Lewin told us that we, as fupriests of the Ukrainian CathChurch, should know what Metropolitan had done for the Jof Ukrainian Galacia under Noccupation. He spoke about howown life was saved when the Mropolitan gave him shelter in LSt. George's Cathedral, how Metropolitan, who stood resoluin favour of Ukraine's independand shared in the general euphof liberation from the Soviets, ertheless kept a critical vigiltoward German rule.

In February 1942, he even dto lodge a protest against thestruction of the Galician Jewcommunity with Heinrich Himhimself. The Nazi who delivHimmler's response bluntly told

Metropolitan that if it were nohis age, he would have been for meddling in matters wshould not concern him.

The Metropolitan saw thdifferently. He persisted with wof Christian charity. He soon mlized a Christian opposition to Nrule in western Ukraine. He leVatican know what was happen

when the Jewish visitor came toRoblin, Manitoba. And when he told me about a modern-dayMoses. Ours, and his!
