hile thinking of some kindof response to show myappreciation for all of your

warm holiday wishes, I cameacross a comment on the back of

an old church bulletin: “We can’talways control the circumstancesaround us, but we can control theway we deal with things”.

Immediately I thought ofthe Serenity Prayer. This is a prayer that I use on a daily basis,sometimes several times a day. Itis something that has carried methrough some difficult times. I present it to you as my gift to you,

something for you to carry throughthe year. Many of you know it, itgoes like this:

“God grant me the serenity toaccept the things I cannot

change... Courage to change thethings I can… And the wisdom toknow the difference.”

This prayer is a great helpfor us to relax and take a deep breath when life appears to be anendless series of problems. Weask God for the help to sort thingsout, to see that many persons, plac-es and situations are really out ofour hands.

We ask for the gift of innserenity and peace especially whestorms are breaking out around uThe ability to keep inner peacwithin our -selves is indeed a gifrom God Who is in control of oulives. This prayer helps us cultvate inner peace despite circumstances, problems, and challengeand the words and actions of others.

For a long time in my owlife, I thought that it was my caand duty to try to solve other peo ple’s problems, show them hothey should live their lives, and ocourse, as priest, have an answer everyone’s difficulties. I do not dthis any more, and as I get oldeor maybe more mature, I havfound out that I am not an “answeman”. Many of us do try to cotrol the actions and lives of other

Цими словами благовісника з небес Христова Церква звіщає спасенну новину. Сьогодні нам народився СпасителГосподь на землю зійшов і явився в людському тілі у місті Вифлеємі. Радіє цього дня небо і земля, радіє весь людський рід тищо наш Творець не покинув свого сотворіння, але прийшов, щоб прийняти його долю. Він сам став людиною, щоб розділитинею її життя: її болі і радості, її тривогу і непевність. Господь стає одним із нас, об’являє себе нашим СпасителемВизволителем.

У святі Різдва Христового ми радіємо тому, що більше не почуваємося самотніми і покинутими, святкуємо те, що Богз нами, що Він нас любить, і бачимо втілену Божу любов у новонародженому Дитятку Ісусі, який ніжно спочиває в яслах н

сіні. Таїнство народження нашого Спасителя виявляє нам правду про те, як велике Боже відкривається нам через слаблюдське, як людське мале і незначне може стати Божим великим!

Святе Євангеліє оповідає нам, що Господь Всесвіту народився в родині біженців. Спочатку через наказ кесаря, а потчерез кровожерність царя Ірода Пресвята родина була змушена покинути свою домівку та просити прихистку в чужих людеТак, наш Бог забажав народитися як безхатченко і біженець! За таких дивних обставин народження Спасителя привілперебувати біля Божого Дитяти мали разом із мудрецями зі Сходу лише ті, хто не соромився бути поруч із потребуючимвигнанцями та переслідуваними. Відкривши Йому двері свого серця, свого дому, розпізнавши знак спасіння в Господі, щнародився у вертепі, ці люди сповнилися божественною радістю серед темряви ночі. Бо ж різдвяне таїнство – це здатнісувійти в Божу присутність і зустріти новонародженого Христа через вміння бути поруч: бути поруч із тим, хто немічнийбеззахисний, хто терпить від холоду та браку найнеобхіднішого.

Україна прожила дивовижний рік, в якому все було великим: надія і відчай, впевненість і розчарування, здобуткивтрати. Великим був і страх, що його відчула Темрява, бачачи, що наш порив до Світла може бути переможним. І Темрянаслала на нас біль і кров, каліцтво і навіть смерть, щоб люди жахнулися тим стражданням і звернули на давню стежкмовчазного та беззаперечного підпорядкування.

Немає жодного українця, який не брав би участі в цьому іспиті Господнього провидіння, котрий продовжує тривати. В якомусенсі ми всі сьогодні в зоні ризику, у зоні АТО. Подібно до пастирів, які на місці випасання свого стада почули спів ангелів небі і прийняли звістку про народження Спасителя, так і кожен з нас має своє місце духовного чування, свій «блокпост», що ньому повинен здійснити власну християнську і громадянську місію. І навіть якщо хтось утомився і хоче уникнути вибору, твсе одно його робить. Тільки в такому разі своєю пасивністю він грає на руку злу.

Наша цьогорічна дорога до Різдва була дорогою до пораненого і вигнаного. Наша Церква в буквальному сенсі ста




польовим шпиталем, розгорнутим щоб дати прихисток гнаним і загоїти рани постраждалих. Але навіть після Майдану Церквне позбулася функцій шпиталю, оскільки це її покликання. Про це нагадує нам Папа Франциск: « Я бачу Церкву як польовишпиталь після битви».

До війни ніхто з нас не був готовий, проте вона триває, непрохано вламується чи не в кожну вкраїнську домівкуособливо на східних теренах нашої країни. Постає небезпека, що людська чутливість до горя і страждання ближньогзменшуватиметься. Християни знають, що байдужість убиває не менше, ніж снаряди установок «Град». Справа держави мудро вирішити проблему допомоги своїм стражденним громадянам. А справа кожного християнина – бути близько, бутпоруч із тими, хто в біді. Саме це християнське єднання з потребуючими, яке звемо солідарністю, і робить нас сильними. Бо вньому проявляється і через нього передається нам сила воплоченого Бога, дія Спасителя, який народився для того, щоб вчинитнас вільними і непереможними в Бозі.

У різдвяний час кожен із нас поглядає на небо в надії побачити світло вифлеємської зорі. Бо Новий рік не обіцяє бутилегшим, а наш вибір – простішим. Наше найбільше завдання на 2015 рік – це вийти на шлях цивілізованого розвитку й гідногожиття. Для цього ми всі мусимо зодягнутися в іншу – Божу – людину, тобто зректися негідних компромісів з лукавим. Цзавдання стосується кожного з нас – навіть того, хто вважає себе найменшим у цьому світі. Завдання змістити свою життєвупозицію в бік добра має також великий громадянський сенс, бо коли зміниться українка та українець – зміниться і вся нашкраїна. Усі разом ми маємо зодягнути її в нове намисто ефективних державних структур, які перестануть нарешті бутиструктурами гріха. Адже влада може бути благословенням, якщо стає служінням.

Обидва завдання неможливо здійснити, бодай раз не відчувши сумніву, не помилившись, не зробивши кроку назад. Нмаймо гордині досконалості – краще визнаймо перед Богом свої слабкості й смиренно просімо: Боже, допоможи моєму

безсиллю! Смиренна людина не втрачає віри у свої сили, бо, за словами Івана Франка, «чує на своєму плечі руку Господню»Тому пам’ятаймо, що зневіра, розчарування, мстиве прагнення поквитатися з тими, хто не здійснив наших очікувань, – цінструменти, якими Темрява найефективніше відновлює свої втрачені позиції. Не помагаймо їй зруйнувати наші шанси! Біда нв тому, що не все вдається зробити. Біда, коли від цього в людини опускаються руки!

Маємо перед собою ще одне завдання, щодо якого ніколи не має бути сумніву. Це завдання молитися. Майдан перемітому, що ревно і щиро молився. Сьогодні не дозвольмо, щоб через певне «призвичаєння» до війни ослабла інтенсивність нашимолитов. Спрямуймо всі сили своєї душі на те, щоб у наших родинах і спільнотах тривала безперервна молитва за Українущоб у нашій державній оселі, ніби в бідній вифлеємській яскині, засяяло світло віри, очистилися наші серця, зродилося новжиття. І тоді, маючи на собі Боже благословення, ми станемо найщасливішим народом на Землі.

Серед темної ночі непевності й тривоги звучить прадідівська коляда, розвіваючи смуток та всілякі негаразди... З цим різдвяним благовістям прагну відвідати кожну домівку добрих людей, які приймають до себе новонародженого Бога

Спасителя та радіють Різдвом Христовим!

Сьогодні линемо з різдвяним привітом до наших воїнів, які святкують цей величний празник у холодних окопах тбліндажах на передовій і готові грудьми закрити свій народ. Зі святковим віншуванням добра і гаразду заходимо до тих, хтвтратив свою домівку та тепло рідної сім’ї.

Зі співом ангелів про мир на землі та славу на висотах завітаймо сьогодні до тих, хто сумує через втрату рідних таблизьких, хто страждає від отриманих ран і тих, хто в полоні й ув’язненні. Як у цю різдвяну ніч радість перемагає смуток, небесне світло – темряву, так нехай у своєму Різдві наш Спаситель сповнить нас силою звитяги добра над злом, правди нанеправдою, і небесний мир хай здолає війну.

Усім нашим вірним в Україні і на поселеннях з усього серця зичу веселих свят Різдва Христового, смачної куті тадзвінкої коляди!

cease to function as a hospital, for that is her vocation. Pope Francis reminds us of this: “I see the Church as a field hospital after battle.”

None of us were ready for war, and yet it continues, uninvited – it breaks into virtually every Ukrainian home, especially in thEastern territories of our Land. There is a danger that the boundary of human sensitivity to the pain and suffering of one’s neighbour widiminish. Christians know that apathy kills no less than “Hrad” missile launchers. The task before the state is to wisely resolve the problem of aid to those citizens who have suffered. While the task before every Christian is to be close, to accompany those who are in dirneed. This Christian unity with those in need, which we call solidarity, is what makes us strong. In it are revealed and through it we receive the power of the incarnate God, the action of the Saviour, who was born in order to make us free and undefeatable in God.

In the time of Christmas each one of us looks at the sky in the hope of seeing the light of the star of Bethlehem. For the NewYear promises not to be easier or our choice to be simpler. Our greatest task for 2015 is to embark on the path of development of civilisation and a life of dignity. For this we must clothe ourselves in a godly, not worldly manner, by renouncing all unworthy compromisewith the evil one. This applies to each one of us – even to the one who considers himself or herself as the least in this world. The task odirecting one’s life towards good also makes great civil sense, for when every Ukrainian man and woman will change, the country wilalso change. Together we must adorn ourselves with effective government structures, which will finally cease to be structures of sin. Fogovernment can be a blessing, if it becomes service.

Both tasks are impossible to fulfil if we don’t experience doubt, don’t make mistakes, don’t step back. Let us not carry the pridof perfection, but rather let us admit before God our weaknesses and ask in humility: O God, help me in my weakness! A humble persondoes not lose faith in his strength, for, in the words of Ivan Franko, one “feels on his shoulder the hand of the Lord.” Therefore, let uremember that despair, disappointment, the impulsive desire to rid ourselves of those, who have not fulfilled our expectations these arethe instruments, which allow Darkness to most effectively reacquire its lost positions. Let us not help it undermine our chances for suc

cess. Failing to always do everything is not the problem. Allowing our failures to make us lose heart is!

We have before us one task, about which we should never have any doubt. That task is to pray. The Maidan was victorious because people prayer, fervently and sincerely. Today let us not allow for a certain “being used to” war to weaken the intensity of our prayers. Let us direct all the strength of our soul, so that in our families and communities prayers for Ukraine continue to be raised unceasingly, so that our beloved land might be filled with the light of faith, as was the poor cave of Bethlehem, that our hearts might be purifiedthat a new life may be born. And then, having received God’s blessings, we will be the happiest people on earth.

In the dark night of insecurity and fear, let our ancient koliada dispel all sadness and every worry… With this Christmas greetinI seek to visit each home, filled with good people, who receive the newborn God and Saviour and rejoice with feast of Christ’s Nativity!

Today we extend our Christmas greetings to our soldiers, who celebrate this great feast in cold frontline trenches and shelterswith their chests forward, ready to defend their nation. With festive wishes we greet all those who lost their home and miss the warmth o

their families, that all may be good and well in their lives.

With the song of angels announcing peace on earth and glory in the highest let us today visit those, who mourn the loss of family and friends, who suffer from their battle wounds, who are in captivity or imprisoned. As in this Christmas night joy overcomes sorrowand heavenly light – darkness, so in his Nativity let our Saviour fill us with the strength of his victory, of good over evil, of truth oveuntruth, and may a heavenly peace overcome war.

To all our faithful in Ukraine and throughout the world I send you my deepest heartfelt wishes for a merry Christmas, a tastykutia, and a resounding koliada.

ПАСТИРСЬКЕ ПОСЛАННЯ ЄПИСКОПІВ УКРАЇНСЬКОЇ КАТОЛИЦЬКОЇ ЦЕРКВИ В СПОЛУЧЕНИХ ШТАТАХ АМЕРИКВСЕЧЕСНИМ ОТЦЯМ, ПРЕПОДОБНИМ ЧЕНЦЯМ І ЧЕРНИЦЯМ, СЕМІНАРИСТАМ ТА ДОРОГИМ ВІРНИМ

ХРИСТОС РАЖДАЄТЬСЯ!

«Слава на висотах Богу і на землі мир [ в людях благовоління / людям Його вподобання ]». (Лк. 2: 14)

Наші приготування до великого празника Різдва Господа нашого, Бога і Спасителя Ісуса Христа наводять на думкпісню ангелів у Вифлеємі. Маємо добру нагоду, щоб розмірковувати над ними протягом цієї пори, і, можливо, навіть дозволитцим думкам вплинути на наші новорічні поcтанови, у той час як ми готуємося до приходу 2015 року. Особливо важлипам'ятати обіцянки ангелів про мир у цьому році, бо здається так бракує його у ці дні. Нам потрібно нагадати, що, незважаючна заголовки, які кричать про «нелюдяність людини до людини», Божий план для нас відрізняється від того, нанесеного на св

лідерами, яких холодні, прораховані амбіції і ненаситна жадність не знають кордонів, убивці, для яких люди є лишінструментами, котрі будуть використані і викинуті, для яких життя не має жодної цінності.

Ця стародавня пісня була вперше почута у світі, який, хоча і віддалений від нас на два тисячоліття та розділенвеликим технологічним проваллям, не так вже і відрізняється в плані людської природи. Чим був цей світ? Святий Павговорить галатам: « Якже сповнився час, Бог послав свого Сина, що народився від жінки, народився під законом, щоб викупитих, які під законом, щоб ми прийняли усиновлення» (4:4-5). Чи означає це, що все було ідеально? Аж ніяк ні! Деякі романтихотять відзначити, що Ісус народився під час так званого «Пакс Романа» - тобто, «Римського миру». Зовні це, можливвиглядало ніби мир панував у всьому Римському світі, але цей лад підтримувався тільки, спонсорованою Римською державотактикою терору - тактикою, такою як розп'яття, до якого у кінцевому результаті буде засуджений Ісус, так як він вважавзагрозою для того самого «Пакс Романа». Щоб не відстати від жорстокості римлян, невеликий монарх Ірод вдався дітовбивства, коли стикнувся з тією ж самою загрозою своїй владі від новонародженого, замовляючи вбивство кожної дитинчоловічої статі у віці до двох років. Такий був «Римський мир»; це не дивно, що люди кипіли під чоботом завойовникРимляни і їх маріонетки мали підстави побоюватися повстання.

Тож, як на рахунок «повноти часу»? Імовірну відповідь можливо знайти у будь-якій з програм з дванадцяти кроктакої як Анонімні Алкоголіки. Відповідно до ідеї дванадцяти кроків, люди з шкідливими звичками часто не готові змінити свжиття поки вони не «досягли дна», - іншими словами, поки їх життя не стало настільки поганим, що у них нема іншого шляхяк підніматися вгору. Можливо, у цей час на людей надходило прозріння. Хіба ви не чуєте їх благання, як вони моляться Бога про полегшення словами Псалму 123?

До тебе я підношу мої очі,до тебе, що живеш на небі.

Як очі слуг на руки свого пана

і як слугині на руки господині,так наші очі дивляться на Господа, Бога нашого,

поки не змилосердиться над нами.

Помилуй нас, о Господи, помилуй! Бо надто ми наситилися зневаги.

Надто наситилася душа наша

глузування ситих, зневаги гордих.

Саме до таких людей, прагнучих бути врятованими від насильства і безладу їхнього світу, ангели співали про мир.

Небагато змінилося за дві тисячі років: у будь-якому разі, наші технології зробили нас більш ефективними у заподіянсмерті і хаосу. Тим не менш, ми наважуємося сміливо поєднати наші голоси у пісні ангелів, наполегливо відмовляючизневіритися в обіцянці миру. Як ми це робимо, ми повинні пам'ятати, що світ не подарунок, який, як сніг, сходить із неба, щ

оновити землю і приховати шрами які ми нанесли. Швидше, це наше завдання, наше покликання. Як папа Павло VI нагадунам: « Якщо ви хочете миру, працюйте на справедливість». Пророк Ісая (2:3-5, 11:6-9) надає саме таку чудову візію людей, щзмагаються разом за мир, який Бог надає для світу, а потім пожинають плоди своїх праць:

І сила народів піде туди, і скажуть:«Ходіте, вийдемо на гору Господню,

в дім Бога Якова,і він покаже нам свої дороги,

і будемо ходити його стежками,бо з Сіону закон вийде,і слово Господнє з Єрусалиму».

І він судитиме народи,буде розсуджувати людей многих;

вони перекують свої мечі на рала,а списи свої на серпи.

Народ на народ не буде меча підіймати,і не вчитимуться більше воювати.

Доме Якова, прийдіть,і будемо ходити в світлі Господнім!

... Вовк буде жити вкупі з ягнятком,

леопард біля козеняти лежатиме; телятко й левеня будуть пастися разом,

і маленька дитина їх поведе. Корова й ведмедиця будуть пастися вкупі,

маленькі їхні лежатимуть разочком, а лев, як віл, солому буде їсти.

PASTORAL MESSAGE OF THE UKRAINIAN CATHOLIC HIERARCHY OF THE U.S.A. TO OUR CLERGY, HIEROMONKS AND BROTHERS, RELIGIOUS SISTERS, SEMINARIANS AND BELO

VED FAITHFUL

CHRIST IS BORN!

“Glory to God in the highest, and peace [to men of good will/to those on whom His favor rests].” (Luke 2: 14)

Our preparations for the great feast of the Nativity of Our Lord, God, and Savior Jesus Christ bring to minthe song of the angels at Bethlehem. It is good for us to meditate upon them during this season, and perhaps eveto let this meditation influence our New Year's resolution as we prepare also for the arrival of 2015. It is especialimportant to remember the angelic promise of peace this year since there seems to be so little peace these days: wneed to be reminded that, despite the headlines which scream of “man's inhumanity to man”, God's plan for us different from the one inflicted upon the world by leaders whose cold, calculating ambition and insatiable greeknow no bounds, thugs for whom people are merely tools to be used and discarded, for whom life is of no value.

The ancient song was first heard in a world which, although separated from us by two millennia and bywide technological chasm, was really not so different in terms of human nature. What was that world? Saint Patells the Galatians “When the fullness of time had come, God sent His Son, born of a woman, born under the lawto ransom those under the law, so that we might receive adoption. (4: 4 -5)” Does this mean that everything w perfect? Far from it! Some romantics like to point out that Jesus was born during what was referred to as the Pa Romana – that is, the “Roman Peace”. Outwardly, it may have looked as though peace reigned throughout the Roman world, but that peace was only maintained by Roman state

-sponsored terror tactics – tactics like the crucifi

ion to which Jesus would eventually be sentenced since he was considered a threat to that very same Pax Roman Not to be outdone by the cruelty of the Romans, the petty monarch Herod resorted to infanticide when faced withe same newborn threat to his power, ordering the murder of every male child under the age of two. Such was th Pax Romana; it is no wonder that the people seethed under the conqueror's boot! The Romans and their puppehad reason to fear rebellion.

So what about “the fullness of time”? A possible answer can be found in any of the twelve -step programsuch as Alcoholics Anonymous. According to the twelve-step paradigm, people with addictions are often nready to change their lives until they have “hit bottom” - in other words, until their life has gotten so bad that theis no way to go but up. Perhaps this was the realization which was dawning on the people at that time. Can't yohear them moaning as they pray to God for relief in the words of Psalm 123?

To you I raise my eyes, to you enthroned in heaven.

Yes, like the eyes of servants

on the hand of their masters, Like the eyes of a maid

on the hand of her mistress, So our eyes are on the LORD our God,

till we are shown favor. Show us favor, LORD, show us favor,

for we have our fill of contempt.

Our souls are more than sated

with mockery from the insolent, with contempt from the arrogant.

It is to such people, seeking to be ransomed from the violence and disorder of their world, that the angelssang of peace.

Nothing much has changed in two thousand years: if anything, our technology has made us more effectiveat inflicting murder and mayhem. Nonetheless, we dare bravely to join our voices in the angels' song, stubbornlyrefusing to give up on the promise of peace. As we do so, we must remember that peace is not a gift which, likethe snow, comes down from heaven to refresh the earth and hide the scars we have inflicted. Rather, it is our task,our vocation. As Pope Paul VI reminds us, “If you want peace, work for justice.” The prophet Isaiah (2: 3-5; 11: 6-9) provides just such a glorious vision of people striving together for the peace which God intends for the world,and then enjoying the fruits of their labors:

Many peoples shall come and say: “Come, let us go up to the LORD’s mountain,

to the house of the God of Jacob, That he may instruct us in his ways,

and we may walk in his paths.”

For from Zion shall go forth instruction,

and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. He shall judge between the nations,

and set terms for many peoples. They shall beat their swords into plowshares

and their spears into pruning hooks; One nation shall not raise the sword against another,

nor shall they train for war again. House of Jacob, come,

let us walk in the light of the LORD! ...

Then the wolf shall be a guest of the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the young goat;

The calf and the young lion shall browse together, with a little child to guide them.

The cow and the bear shall graze, together their young shall lie down; the lion shall eat hay like the ox.

The baby shall play by the viper’s den, and the child lay his hand on the adder’s lair.

They shall not harm or destroy on all my holy mountain; for the earth shall be filled with knowledge of the LORD, as water covers the sea.

“With a little child to Guide them” - ah, yes, the newborn Prince of Peace. May His peace be with all of usand with our world, in this holy season and throughout the year to come.
