Chapter 1: IntroductionTra nsla ting CAD da ta betw een va rious systems ca n be diffi cult. Different C AD
syst ems ha ve different representa tions of da ta . For insta nce, some systems cont a in
th e concept of a hole a nd some do not. D ifferences in t ra nsla tion forma ts often ca use
da ta to be lost or tra nsformed.

options t ha t you ca n set from t he Im port a nd Export dia log boxes. These options
contr ol how the tra nslat or w orks. For exa mple, with t he IG ES a nd G DS II forma t
flattenopt ion , a la y ou t ca n be t r a n sla t e d a s a fl a t , n on -h ier a r ch ica l d es ig n. S im ila r lyt he mergeoption for t hese forma t s crea tes t w o new polygons from t w o int ersecting
closed sha pes.Other options include a rc conversions, trea t ment of holes a nd t ext, a nd in t he lay ers
fi le, specifi ca tion of layer tr a nslat ion t a bles. The IG ES tra nslat or ha s th e grea test
number of options beca use IGE S is such a broa d sta nda rd. Syst em defaults a re
included wit h t he product a nd a re au toma tically used if no oth ers ar e specifi ed.
Tra nsla ting schema tic designs is initia ted from the ADS Ma inor Schematicw indowusing the Fi le > Impor ta nd Fi le > Expor tmenu comma nds. Simila r t o the Lay outtra nslat ors, ea ch schema tic tra nslat or ha s a ssociat ed options th a t control how th e
translator works.
Layout Export Considerations
B efore sta rt ing a lay out , you should consider how th e fi na l out put could a ffect t he
la yout process. D ifferent output form a t s impose different rest rictions. The
r es t rict ion s im pos ed by G D S I I a r e ver y d iffer en t fr om t h os e im pos ed by D XF, H P G L
Mask, or Gerber.
Wit h a l l expor t for ma t s , y ou m us t con sid er la y ou t u nit s a n d d a t a ba s e pr ecis ion . Th eunits a nd precision used in layout should ma tch those you w a nt in th e fi na l output.
U sua lly no problems are associat ed w ith tra nslat ing units th a t a re in the sam e
mea sur ement s yst em (such a s, mils to inches or cent imet ers to millimet ers).
However, round-of f er rors ca n occur when tra ns la t ing f rom metr ic-to-English units o
vice versa .

DXF
The Dr a w ing E xcha nge Form a t (DXF) w a s developed by Aut odesk for it s Aut oCAD
product a nd is widely used to tr a nsfer geometr ic da ta bet w een syst ems. Like th e
m a s k fi le for m a t , it pr ovid es a s im ple g eom et r ic r epr es en t a t ion of d a t a . D XF fi les ca n
be t r ans fer r ed b etween P C-based or UN IX-b ased sys tems. For deta i ls, see C h a pt er 3DXF Tra nsla tor .
EGS (Archive/Generate)
Engineering G ra phics Syst em (EG S) forma t is a genera l gra phics forma t used for
ca pturing m a nua lly ent ered designs. EG S h a s been a pplied t o IC s, Micro-circuits,
Hybrids, a nd P C B oa rd design a pplica tions. Using this forma t, you ca n easily
excha nge da ta w ith other progra ms using EG S forma ts.
The layout portion of Adva nced D esign S yst em ha s a dopted m a ny of the primitivetypes a nd styles tha t a re pa rt of the EG S st a nda rd, but ha s a more enriched set of
ca pabilities th a t st ructure informa tion not representa ble in EG S. For exa mple, E G S
fi les ca nnot represent embedded a rcs.
Tw o va riat ions of the EG S forma t a re:
The Generateforma t is a fl a tt ened l ist of EG S primitives specifi ed in t heuser-defi ned un it space. N o add it iona l in for mat ion is supplied such as supplied
w ith t he Archive forma t.
The Archivefor mat is a h ier a r ch ica l ly or gan i zed lis t of E G S pr imit ives specifi edin the user-defi ned unit spa ce. Informa tion such a s dra w ing sha pes, lay out
units, da ta ba se precision, a nd gr id spacing is included.

GDSII Stream
G DS II St rea m Forma t (Ca lma) is a n industry sta ndard for tra nsla t ing fina l ma sk
da ta to foundr ies. The Adva nced D esign S yst em read s G DS II versions 4.0 th rough
6.0 a nd w rites G DS II version 6.0.
U nlike oth er da ta forma ts, G DS II strea m forma t is bina ry. You cannot ea sily view or
ed it a st r ea m for ma t fi l e u sin g a t ext ed it or. Th is for ma t is ea s ily t r a nsla t ed bet w een
dif fer en t CAD sys tems because it r epr esen ts a h ighly r es t r ict ive da ta ty pe. However

Gerber
G erber refers to various da ta input format s th a t G erber Scientifi c uses to drive its
photoplot t ers. The G erber form a t is used by photoplot t ers produced by oth er
ma nufa ctu rers a lso. Adva nced D esign S yst em support s va rious ty pes of G erber
ou tput via m a sk fi l es t o eit h er t h e G er ber or D XF t r a nsla t or. For d et a ils, see Chapte7, G erber Art w ork Tra nsla tor a nd G erber View er.
Gerber Viewer
G er ber View er a ppea r s a s a n export fi le opt ion . I t is n ot a fi l e for ma t , but is pla ced on
t he expor t fi l e m enu so you ca n open t he G er ber View er a t a n y t im e. I n a d dit ion , y ou
ca n a ccess t h e View er d ur in g a D XF or G er ber expor t (see Using the Ger ber Viewer
on pa ge 7-18).
You can use th e G erber Viewer t o view G erber or ma sk fi les t o help verify t hecorrectn ess of your da ta . Also, you can use th e G erber View er to confi gure ma sk fi le
da ta for photoplott ing.
HPGL/2
H P G L/2 out put is a subset of t he H P G L/2 print er/plot t er la ngu a ge. When crea t ing a
gra ph or chart in a nother t ool , you can w rite the gra phics da ta to a n H P G L/2 output
fi le, then import th e fi le into Adva nced Design Sy stem.
In Adva nced Design System, the HP G L da ta is tra nsformed int o forms a nd sha pestha t can be edited a nd ma nipulat ed like any other dra w ing. Additiona l text,
a nnota tion, sca ling or editing ma y be add ed. For deta ils, see Ch a pter 8, H P G L/2

IFF
The Int ermediat e File Forma t (IF F) is a n ASC II fi le with a simple, line-oriented
comma nd st ructure a nd a fa irly rich set of const ructs. This forma t is ma chine- a nd
a pplica tion-independent, t hus simplifying design da ta tr a nsfer.
IFF fi les a re used a s the excha nge mecha nism w hen tra nsferring designs betw een
Advanced Des ign Sy stem and th ir d-par ty E DA tools such as Mentor G r aphics Des ign
Architect a nd C a dence Ana log Art ist. For m ore informa tion a bout th ese fra mew ork

IGES
Th e I n it ia l G r a p hics E xch a n ge S pecifi ca t i on (I G E S ) is a n a p pr oved AN S I s t a n da r d o
t he U.S. Depa rt ment of Comm erce (ANS I Y14.25M) t ha t is u sed extensively
th roughout t he comput er-a ided design and m a nufa ctu ring w orld. The IG ES forma t
ca n represent both mecha nica l an d electrica l design dat a in tw o a nd t hreedimensions.
B eca use IG ES is such a broa d sta nda rd, the government ha s at tempted to further
defin e a str icter sta nda rd of IG ES for t he tra nsfer of electrica l design dat a . This
sta nda rd is know n a s CALS specifi ca tion. The CALS specifi ca tion for IG ES is
offi cial ly conta ined in the mili tary specificat ion MIL-D-28000, D igi tal Repr esent ati onfor Communi cati on of Pr oduct D ata: IGES Appl i cati on Subsets.
The Adva nced D esign Sy stem support s version 4.0 and 5.0 IG E S forma ts. The
progra m rea ds a nd w rites IG ES CALS Level 1 (technica l illustra tion) a nd Level 3
(elect rica l/elect ronic a pplica t ions) fi les. Level 2 (engin eering d ra w ings) is not fu lly
supported since Level 2 is used primarily for drafting applications.
Even w ith t he CALS sta nda rds, CAD syst ems accept very different IG ES forma ts.
Although it is impossible to a ccomm oda te every forma t, y ou can use a number of
options to confi gure var ious IG E S t ra nsla tors, including tra nsla tors supplied by
Aut odesk, Ment or G ra phics, a nd C a dence. For d eta ils, see Cha pter 10, IG ES
Translator .
Mask File
Mask fi le for mat is a s imple fl a t (non-h ier a r ch ica l ) geometr ic descr ipt ion . The for ma
fa cilita tes t he tra nsfer of simple geometr ic da ta for fi na l ma sk processing. Only
geometr ic forms a re described in a ma sk fi le; simula tion dat a , element pa ra meters,
substra te defi nitions, an d hierarchy a re not included.
The Gerber a nd DXF tra nslat ors use the ma sk fi le forma t a s an intermediat e fi le
w hen converting da ta to G erber a nd D XF. For deta ils, see Ch a pter 11, Ma sk Files.
MGC/PCB
MG C/P CB fi les a re IFF fi les tha t a re used exclusively for Mentor G ra phics design
t r ans fer s. Although th is for mat is ava i lab le fr om the Advanced Des ign Sy stem lay ou
export menu only, you can t ra nsfer both schema tic an d la yout informa tion.
MG C/P CB fi les w rite t o a specifi c loca tion each a nd every t ime. When you select th is
forma t, t he fi lena me a nd loca tion of the IFF tra nsport is determined aut oma tica lly.

Simula tion P rogra m w ith Int egrat ed Circuit Em phasis (SP ICE ) is a simulat ion tool
used by engineers t hroughout th e w orld for simula ting circuits of a ll types. Since its
development a t t he Un iversity of Ca lifornia B erkeley, SP IC E ha s been
commercialized a nd modifi ed by a la rge number of vendors a nd a lso a dopted a ndmodifi ed by elect ronics compa nies for t heir own in -house use. Ma ny d esigners a nd
compa nies ha ve lar ge investm ent s in exist ing subcircuit s or device models described
by SP ICE netl ists tha t t hey wa nt t o use w ith the Adva nced Design System from
Agilen t Technologies.

Spectre
S pect re is a n E D A (E lect ronic D esign Aut oma t ion) t ool produced by Ca dence D esign
Sy stems, Inc. Spectr e is used by engineers t hroughout th e world for simula ting
circuits of all ty pes. Many designers a nd compa nies ha ve la rge investm ents in
existing subcircuit s or device models described by S pectr e netlists t ha t th ey wa nt to
use w ith t he Adva nced D esign S yst em (AD S ) from Agilent Techn ologies.

Importing a Schematic
In Adva nced Design S ystem, you can Import a Schema tic in t hese forma ts:

1. Open a project a nd choose File > Import. The Im port dia log box a ppea rs.
2. Select th e a ppropriat e fi le forma t from t he File Type drop-down list.

syst em-w ide options fi le exists for each t ra nsla t or. These fi les ca n be found in
th e $H P EE SOF _DI R/confi g d irectory. The defa ult system fi le is a ut oma tically
rea d w hen y ou click More Options in t he Im port dia log box (unless a local
options fi le a lrea dy exists in t he curr ent pr oject d irect ory ). When you ma ke
ch a n ges in t h e opt ion s d ia l og box a n d click OK, a loca l copy of t he opt ion s fi l e i
w rit t en to th e curr ent project d irect ory.
4. To specify the pa th a nd fi lena me of the fi le you wa nt to import , click Browse.
5. Double-click as needed to loca t e the d ir ector y con ta in ing the des ign . B y defau l t

Exporting a Schematic
In Adva nced Design S ystem, you can Export a Schema tic in t his forma t:

To export a schema t ic design:
1. Open your design a nd choose File> Export. The E xport dia log box appea rs.

Lack of Support for Holes
La ck of support for h oles is usua lly not a problem, but should be considered. TheAdva nced D esign S yst em ca n convert sha pes w ith holes into cont iguous single
polygons by insert ing a n extra edge (shown below ). Insert ing a n edge is va lid for
G DS II output, but ma y be a problem for certa in ma sk generat ion softwa re.
Filename Limitation
I f very long na mes a re used for netw orks (great er tha n 32 cha ra cters), a tra nslat ion
ta ble ca n be genera ted t o ma p these nam es to shorter, unique na mes.
Limit on the Number of Layers
I f y ou r la y ou t h a s m or e t h a n 255 la y er s, som e of t h ese ca n be r e-m a pped t o a ppea r on
the same G DS II layer.
Conclusion
G DS II l imita tions can a ffect how you design your layout. The l imita tion t ha t bea rs
part icular considera tion is the fact th a t G DS II S trea m forma t is l imited to 200vert ices per polygon/polyline a nd does not in clude a rcs.

Guidelines/Considerations

When tra nsferring a G DS II fi le via FTP, you must specify the binar y option.
When tr a nsferring a fi le via t a pe, the 2048 block size must be preserved. To
w rite fi xed-block sized t a pes for t ra nsfer t o ot her syst ems, refer t o your
comput er syst em document a tion.
When reading a G DS II fi le, the Advanced D esign S ystem ignores referencelibra ries, font fi les, genera tions, forma t t ypes, an d nodes. Element fl a gs
(ELFLAGS), complexes (PLEX, see P lex P roperty on pa ge 6-6), da ta types,pat h t ypes, extensions, a nd element propert ies a re a lso skipped.
Rea ding a G DS II fi le ma y also fa i l i f the fi le is the wrong vers ion or ha s been
corrupted.
Note B eca use the G DS II st ream is a block-structured bina ry fi le, i t ca n ea sily
be corrupt ed wh en tra nsferring th e fi le from one syst em to an oth er.
Filenames Versus Instance Names
When import ing a G DS II fi le into the Adva nced Design Syst em, the design na me on
the La yout t i t le bar m a y differ from t he G DS II fi lena me. The reason for t his is as
follows.
The G DS II fi le forma t can cont a in multiple top-level insta nces tha t m a y or ma y not
be r ela t ed t o on e a n ot h er. B eca u se of t h is, t h e G D S I I fi l en a m e m a y n ot be id en t ica l t
t he top-level insta nce na me.
