All 4-H members planning to identify market beef for Iowa State Fair must bring their animals to weigh-in between

8:00 and 8:30 am. Weigh and tag animals first; then go to Adair County Veterinary Clinic to have retinal images taken. Call the

Extension office 743-8412 or 1-800-ISUE399 or e-mail [email protected] if you plan to identify animals for State Fair.

All other exhibitors (4-H and FFA) need to arrive between 8:30 and 10:00 am.

All market beef (market steers, market heifers, junior feeder pens, return bucket/bottle calves shown in the market division) must

be weighed at the countywide weigh-in to be eligible to exhibit at the 2020 Adair County Fair and other 4-H shows. There will be

separate county fair classes for market steers, market heifers, and return bucket/bottle calves.

Each 4-H and FFA member may -

weigh six lead market beef and exhibit three at the county fair.

weigh six head for a junior feeder pen and show three to five head in their pen at the county fair.

weigh six head for the Live Beef Performance—No Fit Class and exhibit three at the county fair.

Lead animals can’t be exhibited in pens or vice versa. If you are a member of both 4-H and FFA, you can identify the maximum

number for each organization.

We do not have a minimum or maximum weight limit at the January 4th weigh-in, but animals entered in the Performance

Contest at county fair should not weigh over 1700 pounds when weighed in at county fair. Exhibitors need to select their

animals accordingly.

Breeding heifers (including return bucket/bottle heifers) do not need to be weighed; however, they must be identified on the

Breeding Beef Identification Report by May 15th with a tattoo.

When you come to weigh-in be prepared to:

Pay $1.50 per head for the special 4-H ear tag. All ear tags will be removed before the 4-H ear tag is put in your

animal’s ear. If you will need your old ear tag number for reference, have it written down and be ready to record your

corresponding 4-H ear tag number.

Pay $5 per head to nominate for State Fair. Retinal imaging required.

Be prepared to sign that you have records that your calf was born and raised in the United States. If it is purchased,

make sure you have the bill of sale and contact information for the seller at home. If it is home-raised, have the birth

date recorded. This is required under the Country of Origin Labeling Law. (COOL)

Identify in which category each animal will be entered (i.e. market steer, market heifer, junior feeder, live beef

performance-no fit, or returning bucket/bottle calf). Separate market steer and market heifer classes will be offered.

Indicate which animals are 4-H and which are FFA. If you are nominating FFA animals for the Iowa State Fair, talk to

your FFA advisor BEFORE weigh-in to assure that they have the proper supplies on hand and can meet you at

weigh-in to handle the nomination procedures. Be prepared to pay $5 per head nominated.

Sign the ID form. Both exhibitor and a parent/guardian needs to sign. If it is impossible for you to come with your

animals, make arrangements to come into the Extension office prior to January 10th to sign.

Bring your completed 4-H enrollment form to weigh-in, if you haven’t already turned it in.

If you have any questions about weigh-in, call the Extension office at 743-8412 or 1-800-ISUE399 or email [email protected]
