Tractor Safety Course – April 9 & 30

Teens between the ages of 14 and 15 are required by federal law to complete a special safety course before they can be employed in a job in which they operate agricultural equipment, including a tractor. Adair County Extension is offering the course this spring.

The class is a combination of self-study including reading assign-ments and watching DVDs, classroom instruction, practical labora-tories, and driving experience. The classroom and driving experi-ence is slated for Saturdays, April 9 and April 30 from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm at the Nodaway Valley Ag Classroom.

The class is open to any student who is 13 years and above, however students will not be eligible to receive their certification until their 14th birthday. Although youth who are operating farm equipment for their parents aren’t required by law to participate in a safety course, they will still benefit from the information provided.

There is a $40 fee for Adair County 4-Hers and a $50 fee for all other participants. Registrations must be submitted to the Adair County Extension office in Greenfield by Friday, April 1. However, students are encouraged to sign up earlier so they can begin the self-study portion of the course.

Protect Cattle Herd with Vaccination Programs Choosing the correct type of vaccine to use on beef and dairy cattle is extremely important to the long-term health of a herd. Guidelines for choosing the cor-rect vaccination program and a timeline for giving those vaccines are laid out in a new Iowa State University Extension and Outreach publication titled IBC 111 Beef and Dairy Cattle Vaccination Programs. It can be accessed online at the ISU Extension and Outreach Store. The new publication highlights several common diseases that require vaccinations and provides guidelines for vaccinating members of the herd. The type of vaccines that should be given before a calf is weaned, prior to breed-ing and before calving are also addressed. The publication is authored by Grant Dewell, associate professor in beef production and extension beef veterinarian, and Patrick Gorden, senior clinician in veterinary diagnostics and production animal medicine at Iowa State.

The Adair County 4-H Youth Council last met on February 7th at the Warren Cultural Center in Greenfield. Members reviewed plans for the Middle School Dance, anti-bullying video ideas, helping with Boys & Girls Fundraiser event on 3/18; and helping with the Peterson Bros performance on 2/28. Members have

been busy helping out with monthly Clover Kids Workshops and mentoring to youth. New YC t-shirts were handed out.

YC New T-shirt Front T-shirt Backside YC hosted their annual Adair County Middle School Dance Event on February 27th at the Warren Cultural Center. NEW THIS YEAR: There was a $3 Admission Fee. No food items were accepted this year. All dance proceeds go to the Kelly Laughery Memorial 4-H Community Service Scholarship Fund. Posters and informational flyers were posted around the event to educate guests on Kelly Laughery and her passion for giving back and community service. Kelly enjoyed mentoring middle schoolers and loved to dance so YC felt this event was the perfect venue to honor her memory and fund-raise for a great cause in her name. The dance ran from 7:00-10:00pm (doors opened at 6:30pm). Approximately 120 youth from NV, WCV, O-M, and A-C attended the event. All middle school youth participating in the event were required to register at the door and provide parent’s or guardian’s contact information. Professional DJ, Austin Warrior provided musi-cal entertainment so the kids could dance the night away. Delicious homemade cookies and bars, along with snack mix and water were provided by YC members. YC provided an anti-bullying activity in the upper lobby. Youth were encouraged to write something nice about someone they knew. Both poster boards were completely full of wonderful and encouraging comments by the end of the event. There was also a couple of fun activities to promote anti-tobacco message and education on the harm tobacco can do. There were free hand-outs of drinking cups, highlighters and pens provided for participants to pick up. Also new this year—Parents’ Entertainment Option. Middle School parents were able to pick up a certificate when they registered their youth for the dance. The certificate got them into the Grand Theater (on the town square in Greenfield) to see ‘The Choice’ feature movie for $5 (a $2 discount). Once the movie was over, parents were invited to ‘The Corner Café’ (on the town square) to enjoy live entertainment and specialty coffee drinks until 10:00pm. It was a fun night for all ages!
