Evaluating 52 record books is a huge job! Please thank these people the next time you see them.

Exciting Communication Opportunity

4-H’ers will have the opportunity to work with John Busbee (established writer/artist/journalist) to capture stories from individuals in your commu-nities who would have been a 4-H’er in the 1940’s era. This would be done by an interview and research process. Each 4-H’er would create his or her unique 3 – 5 minute presentation from the nformation gained. This would be a great opportunity to create an educational presentation, to experience interviewing, to communicate with John Busbee who cre-ated the play “Bonds of War”, and to develop a close relationship with an older member of the community.

Plan to attend the informational meeting scheduled for Thursday, November 19, 5:30 – 7:00 pm at the Extension office. At least one parent is encouraged to attend with their 4-H’er. You will meet Mr. Busbee and receive an overview and timeline of the project. A light meal will be served. Please rsvp to [email protected] by Wednesday, November 18.

Our community club membership stands at 149 (4th – 12 graders), nine Cloverbuds, and thirty-six Clover Kids at this time. We have 26 new Adair County 4-H’ers enrolled! We need past members to get their re-enrollment forms completed as soon as possible, either hardcopy or go to https://iowa.4honline.com to re-enroll online. Remember...EACH 4-H MEMBER MUST BE ENROLLED ANNUALLY. Contact Donna Wallace, Adair County 4-H Program Coordinator, email [email protected] or phone 641-743-8412 with questions.

BEEF WEIGH-IN: Wednesday, December 30, 9–11:30

am at the Adair County Fairgrounds. All market beef (market

steers, market heifers and junior feeder pens) must be weighed at the countywide weigh-in to be eligible at the Adair County Fair and other 4-H shows. Members who exhibited a feeder calf or bucket/bottle calf at the 2015 county fair are encouraged to show their ani-mal as a market beef at the 2016 fair. Each 4-H or FFA member may weigh six market beef for lead animals and six head for a junior feeder pen. A junior feeder pen needs a minimum of three head at county fair. There is no minimum or maximum weight limit at the December 30 weigh-in, but as you select your animals you should consider what they will weigh in July at the county fair. There are 203 days between weigh-in and county fair. The average gain for all 4-H and FFA animals in the beef perfor-mance contest last year was 3.13 pounds per day. A 500 lb. animal gaining 3.13 lbs. per day would weigh 1135 lbs. at the fair. Ideally, your animal should weigh between 1150 and 1300 pounds at the county fair. Animals entered in the performance contest at county fair cannot weigh over 1700 pounds when weighed in at county fair.

LIVE BEEF PERFORMANCE – No Fit Class for 2016

Adair County Fair 2016 will be the second year for this class created to increase our beef and exhibitor numbers. Consider this class when selecting your county fair beef projects. Local cattlemen are available to help. Con-tact the Extension office with questions.

Exhibitor may identify a maximum of 6 steers, and show 3 at the

county fair.

Entries must be weighed and tagged at the county weigh-in on

December 30.

Exhibitor must declare at the weigh-in that the steer is to be

entered in the Live Performance – No Fit Class.

Entries cannot be chosen from steers identified for a junior

feeder pen.

Steer cannot be entered in any other class, except showmanship.

Steer must be halter broken and manageable by the exhibitor by

county fair.

Animals will be judged on live performance and carcass.

Each animal competing in the live show must be entered in the

Beef Performance Contest and sent to the processing plant.

When you arrive at weigh-in, be prepared to –

Pay $1.50 per head for the special 4-H tag.

Identify in which category each animal will be entered

(i.e. market beef, junior feeder, Live Beef Performance – No Fit, or returning bucket/bottle calf). Separate market steer and mar-ket heifer classes will be offered.

Indicate which animals are 4-H and which are FFA.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR MARKET BEEF GOING

TO IOWA STATE FAIR OR AK-SAR-BEN

4-H members who are currently in 5th grade or above are eligible to nominate market beef for the Iowa State Fair and/or AK-SAR-BEN as part of the weigh-in process on December 30. Marke beef nomi-nated for the Iowa State Fair must have a retinal image taken. Ani-mals being nominated for AK-SAR-BEN must have a DNA hair sam-ple taken. Verification forms must be completed at weigh-in and signed by the exhibitor and a parent. Nomination fees - Iowa State Fair will be $10 per head (includes ear tag); AK-SAR-BEN will be $5 per head.

BREEDING HEIFER TATTOOS

Breeding Beef must be identified with a tattoo. If you already have your heifer, now is the time to tattoo her. The International year/letter designation for animals born in 2015 is ‘C’. If you start the tattoo sequence with ‘C’, you will always know the year of birth.

PREMISE ID

All 4-H & FFA swine exhibitors are required to have a Premise ID (covers all family members) in order to sell to the packer with the Adair County Fair group. The number issued from the Iowa Depart-ment of Ag and Land Stewardship (IDALS) is permanent so you do not have to re-apply each year. If you do not already have a Premise ID number apply now. You can access the form at http://www.iowaagriculture.gov/animalindustry/pdf/premiseIDapp.pdf or pick one up at the Extension office.

COUNTY FAIR BEEF, SHEEP, AND SWINE

COMMITTEE MEMBERS ARE LOOKING FOR –

4-Her’s who have a strong desire to care for a calf, lamb, or pig

as a 4-H project, but need help with animal selection, nutrition and care, and showing techniques.

4-H’ers who would be a mentor to other 4-H’ers who would ap-

preciate their help and knowledge.

This could be an outstanding leadership project that would involve communication, time management, and dedication skills by all indi-viduals involved and would also increase our county fair livestock and exhibitor numbers. Call Donna at the Extension office (641-743-8412) or email [email protected] to discuss details.

2015 PRO-AG MEETING

Management Options for Lenders and Agri-businesses

Adair County Extension will be hosting an Agricultural Outlook Meeting on Thursday, December 10 at the Warren Cultural Center Auditorium, 154 Public Square in Greenfield. This program is de-signed to provide participants with a concise evaluation of current market conditions, expected trends in crop and livestock income potential, management implications and weather outlook for 2016.

Dr. Chad Hart, Extension Crop Economist, from Iowa State University. Dr. Hart will discuss the market outlook for corn and soybeans. Current production has driven prices to recent lows, yet input prices remain at historically high levels. You won’t want to miss the information on the production and demand for corn and soybeans in the coming months and how managing price risk and yield risk is critical as profit margins have evaporated for many.

Dr. Lee Schulz, Extension Livestock Marketing Economist, will be presenting on the outlook for beef and pork. Dr. Schulz will be discussing how the livestock industry may respond to current pro-duction costs and future demand. What do lower grain prices and increasing livestock numbers mean for the future of the meat and grain industries?

Dr. Christopher Anderson, Assistant Research Professor, presents the outlook for weather impacts on 2016 yield production, including South America this winter. He will discuss how the unprecedented El Nino and other factors will affect spring planting and likelihood for summer drought.

The Pro Ag Outlook and Management meeting is sponsored by Adair County Corn and Soybean Association, Adair County Farm Bureau, Exchange State Bank, Adair; Farmers and Merchants State Bank, Orient, Winterset and St. Charles; First National Bank, Creston and Afton; First National Bank, Fontanelle, Greenfield, Anita, Massena and Correctionville; First State Bank, Stuart; Rolling Hills Bank & Trust, Atlantic, Adair, Anita, Brewster, Carson, Casey, Griswold, Menlo, Rippey, Stuart, Walnut, and Worthington.

There is no charge to attend thanks to our sponsors, however regis-trations are appreciated. Please rsvp by Monday, December 7, call 641-743-8412 or email [email protected]. Registration will start at 8:30 am with the first presentation at 9:00 am.

SOFA XXII The Speak Out For Agriculture planning committee met on Sunday, November 8, at the Adair County Extension office. Items discussed included a recap of the 2015 trip; committee expectations; the why and how skills to speak out; and the 2016 trip. The YMCA service project was a highlight of SOFA XXI, along with workshops at SDSU and the uniqueness of the Shrimp Shed.

2016 committee members are Tim Beane, Alyssa Christensen, Matt Clark, Hailey Gross, Owen Hensley, Hannah Jorgensen, Skyler Rawlings, Shelby Soper, and Madison Suhr from Adair County, Morgan Barkley, Adison Erickson, Ashley Fruend, Lexi Fruend, Cole Jipsen, and Eric Plagman from Cass. Adult sponsors are Kathy Rohrig and Beth Baudler – Adair County and Beth Irlbeck – Cass County. This group is excited and passionate about agriculture and promoting it to their peers and others.

Adair County Youth Council Members helped to host the 4-H Awards Day on November 1st. Members will focus on enhancing their leadership skills and improving their public speaking abilities this year. This is a great experience for youth. Members met on November 8th at the Warren Cultural Center, Green Room. Their next meeting will be December 6th at Zipp’s Pizza in Adair. There will be a guest speaker presenting valuable information—all members are encouraged to be there. For questions or information on Adair County Youth Council, contact Deena Wells, Youth Council Advisor at 641-745-7164 or [email protected].

4-H CLUBS HELP WITH CLOVER KIDS Clover Kids is off to a great start! Thank-you to Adair County 4-H Youth Council members Jill Wallace, Hank Bohling, and Beau Weinheimer for leading activities. Thank-you to 4-H members Abby Engles, Bella Rubio, Rachel Bruns, Cheyanne Parrott, and Abby Christensen, along with parents-Mandy Breheny, Amy Kading, and Nickie Nelson, for helping this past month. Clover Kids introduces 4-H to Kindergarten-3rd grade students. Adair County 4-H Youth Council members lead Clover Kid activities (STEM, Snacks, Service projects, reading, and more). Older 4-H club members and parents are encouraged to help, also. It is a great service project that gives older youth hands-on leadership experiences while promoting Adair County 4-H to younger youth. Thank-you to the Richland Royals and Washington Stars 4-H Clubs for signing up to provide members/parents for January and March 2016. If your club or you as an individual would like to sign-up to help at a Clover Kids session, please be sure to contact Angie to make arrangements; to ensure helpers have the agenda and materials ahead of time, it is helpful to know at least a week in advance. You can e-mail her at [email protected] or call the office. Thanks
