Congratulations to each 4-H’er, volunteer, and club recognized at the 2013 4-H Awards Day program. It is a memorable way to draw a successful

establishing and caring for a community flower garden or something as simple as raking leaves in the park. Make helping others

a part of your daily life.

CONGRATULATIONS TO

ADAIR COUNTY 4-H’ers

As the Fall school activities schedules wind down, the Adair County Extension Office extends congratulations to our Adair County 4-H’ers who participate in extra-curricular activities. Whether you made it to the State event, won the meet race, made the winning play in the game or match, had a part in the Fall play; or finished the race, stood on the sideline, or sat on the bench, you are to be commended for giving your best effort while managing your time to continue to be an active 4-H club member. Many 4-H’ers also schedule a part-time job and help with projects on the home front. You are learning the valuable life skill of time management.

Your dedication is appreciated!

competed at the State Shoot held near Montezuma. My apologies to Makenna for mistakenly omitting her name in the November 4-H newsletter.

Adair County Wing Walkers hosted a very successful

Halloween Party/Dance. Over 100 6th – 8th graders attended. Remember to watch for the Wing Walkers in the Greenfield Lighted Christmas Parade, 5:30 p.m., Friday, November 29th.

fundraiser. Some of the profits will go toward the purchase of a Res-Q-Tube grain vac system for use by our local fire and rescue units.

NV Champions enjoyed bowling after the Award’s Day event.

Watch for their club also in the Lighted Christmas Parade.

Following Award’s Day program, Hot Shots members stacked

chairs, mopped floor, set-up tables and chairs for upcoming event in WCC auditorium. Members and their families enjoyed a potluck dinner for their November meeting.

Adair County Hot Shots will be participating in the Lighted

Christmas Parade on 11/29. Their club sponsored a letter/card drive for Devin Kohlman, 13, from Ohio. Devin has incurable brain cancer with mere weeks to live. His family requested people to help bring Christmas to Devin by sending him Christ-mas cards. Club members made cards and also placed a col-lection box at Nodaway Valley Middle School. A large package of Christmas greetings was sent to Devin on 11/9/13. See link for more information on Devin: www.kcci.com/news/national/Ohio-town-gives-dying-boy-one-last-Christmas/-/9357144/22811770/-/b6fnd7z/-/index.html?utm_source=hootsuite&utm_medium=facebook&utm_campaign=kcci

Richland Royals and friends attended a hands-on scarf

making workshop at Maple Street Memories Logistics in Creston. Workshop was led by Julie Chaney and Barb Coenen. We’ll expect to see some of their finished projects at county fair. Cooking workshops are also possible at this location. Call Donna at the Extension office if your club is interested.

Summit Super Stars raised money for their club projects by selling 125 poinsettias. Club members gave a monetary dona-tion to the A-C Food Pantry.

Harrison Hummers decorated salt dough ornaments combin-

ing the Polar Express and Ticket to Success themes. Members will use the ornaments in decorating the Christmas tree at the Stuart Care Center.

4-H AG NEWS

BEEF WEIGH-IN will be Friday, December

27th, 8:30 - 11:30 a.m. at the Adair County Fairgrounds Schedule: 8:30 - 9:15am 4-H & FFA State Fair and/or Ak-Sar-Ben Only

9:15 - 11:30am All other 4-H and FFA Exhibitors All market beef (market steers, market heifers and junior feeder pens) must be weighed at the countywide weigh-in to be eligible at the Adair County Fair and other 4-H shows. Members who exhibited a feeder calf or bucket/bottle calf at the 2013 county fair are encour-aged to show their animal as a market beef at the 2014 fair. Remember it must be weighed-in. Each 4-H or FFA member may weigh six market beef for lead animals and six head for a junior feeder pen. A junior feeder pen needs a minimum of three head at county fair. There is no minimum or maximum weight limit at the December 27th weigh-in, but as you select your animals you should consider what they will weigh in July at the county fair. There are 202 days between weigh-in and county fair. The average gain for all 4-H and FFA animals in the beef performance contest last year was 3.33 pounds per day. A 500 lb. animal gaining 3.33 lbs. per day would weigh 1172 lbs. at the fair. Ideally, your animal should weigh between 1150 and 1300 pounds at the county fair. Animals entered in the performance contest at county fair cannot weigh over 1500 pounds when weighed in at county fair. When you arrive at weigh-in be prepared to:

Pay $1.50 per head for the special 4-H tag.

Identify in which category each animal will be entered (i.e. mar-

ket beef, junior feeder, or returning bucket/bottle calf). Separate market steer and market heifer classes will be offered.

Indicate which animals are 4-H and which are FFA.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS for Market Beef

Going to Iowa State Fair or Ak-Sar-Ben

4-H members who are currently in 5th grade or above are eligible to nominate market beef for the Iowa State Fair and/or Ak-Sar-Ben as part of the weigh-in process on December 27th. Market beef nominated for the Iowa State Fair must have a retinal image taken. Animals being nominated for Ak-Sar-Ben must have a DNA sample. Verification forms must be completed at weigh-in and signed by the exhibitor and a parent. Nomination fee for Iowa State Fair will be $10 per head (includes ear tag). Nomination fee for Ak-Sar-Ben will be $5 per head.

COOL Applies to All Livestock Members

COOL, a federal law stands for Country Of Origin Labeling. If you have market beef, lamb, hog, meat goat or poultry, you need to keep records so you can prove your animal or birds were born and raised in the U.S. If you produce your own animals maintain records of your animal/s tag or ear notch and when it was born. A hand written bill of sale which includes the date of sale, seller’s contact information (name, address, and phone number), the animal identifi-cation and a statement that indicates if the animal was born and raised in the U.S.

Communication Is Key to Holiday Sanity Children benefit from relationships with grandparents, aunts and uncles and other extended family members. These relatives express love in many ways, including gift giving, which some parents say can be excessive and difficult to manage. Finding ways to set limits and preserve relationships can be accomplished with clear, respectful, assertive communication skills.

Step 1. Alignment: As a parent, put yourself in the grandparents’ shoes and see the situation from their perspective. Try, ‘I can see how fun it is for you to see joy in your grandchildren’s eyes.’

Step 2. Agree: Find common ground. You could say, ‘I agree that we both love the children deeply and want the best for them.’

Step 3. Redirect: Then move the conversation forward. You could say, ‘I value our relationship and want to work this out together. Let’s find a time before the next holiday to talk about this.’

Step 4. Resolve: “Begin looking for a solution with an action step. Talk together and make a list of gift ideas that feel right for the grandparents and for you. Together you can find something that will strengthen their bond with your children and be manageable for your family.

These four steps may smooth the way for some great problem solving. For additional tips for communicating with relatives during the holidays at ReclaimYourHolidays.org under “Creative Gift Ideas,” or specifically at http://bit.ly/1e9qfKk.
