be glad to have Mr Dew favor Columbia with an apppintment at an early day J 1 Ip rR IJ Wholesale Stealing For some time farmers living three miles south of town have been missing corn and from developments Friday night last there is no telling how much has been stolen For the past two weeks Mr Anderson Holladays crib was being emptied a little too quick to suit him and he concluded upon a plan to find the whys and wherefores for the disappearance of his corn Accordingly Friday night his son Ad who is abouttwenty years old stationed himself gun in hand a short distance from the crib and await ed developments It was but a short time until three or four negroes with a wagon and team appeared upon the scene and at once commenced to load the wagon Young Holladay watched a few minutes then fired upon the squad when every man took to his heels leaving the team which was recognized as the property of Brown Epperson Next morning blood wasI noticed about the crib and in a short time thereafter it leaked out that Tom Willis was lying at his home badly wounded The shooting of Tom fastened all the guilty parties and Brown Epperson Chas and TaltBrad shaw were arrested and lodged in jail The wounded man could not be remov- ed ¬ but will be brought in later Abont nine hundred pounds of corn had been carried to the wagon when the shot was fired Other farmers in the neighborhood have been suffering from like depredations and there IsnoI way to estimate the amount of corn that has been stolen by this band of thieves All the parties will evident- ly be given a trip up the road Mr Nat Gaither who was a grandson of Dr Nathan Gaither who died in Columbia many years ago vis ¬ ited his old friends in this community last week he having resided here in his early manhood He is now a prom¬ inent business man of Hopkinsville where he located soon after the close of the war between the States Our people regretted that he could not re ¬ main with them but two days as he was remembered as a very excellent young man Mr Gaither served in the Confederate army aud was one of the gallant soldiers who went out from Adair county During his stay here he related to us this incident that oc- curred ¬ during the war In 18C2 he was passing through Wayne county with his regiment His horse had given out and he was compelled to secure an ¬ other one He had an acquaintance in the county Mr James Jones with whose son Nat had been in college here and it was to him Mr Gaither told his troubles Mr Jones informed him that he did not have a horse to spare but that his daughter owned one that he would sell All right said Nat bring it out The price agreed upon was 8150 but Mr Gaither had only Confederate money and Mr Jones could not use it Buthe wanted Nat to have the animal and remarked I will take your note for the amount Toe note was executed and in 1871 after Mr Gaither had been elected Circuit Court Clerk of Christian coun ¬ ty the promise to pay was sent him and a check was immediately forward- ed ¬ for principal and interest The State Board of Education hasI directed that all persons holding li- cense ¬ to teach must take an examina ¬ tion in American litature Tbis is in accordance with an act of the last legislature which made provisions for the teaching of the branch Ameri ¬ can literature in common schools An ¬ other law provides that when new subjects are taught teachers must take an examination on these subjects There are a large number of teachers over the State holding what are term ¬ ed exemption license These are ob ¬ tained after teaching a certain num ¬ ber of years if the teacher holds a di- ploma ¬ from the State Normal College or has passed a certain examination which is intended to show the quallfi ¬ cations of a graduate of the State Nor ¬ mal All of these will have to report now for examination in American lite- rature on questions submitted by the State Board The State Board of Equalization in session at Frankfort last week notifi- ed ¬ the County Judge and County Att- orney of Adair that the realty of the county would be raised 7 per cent on the one hundred dollars unless they could be convinced that such action should not be taken In behalf of the property holders of the county Judge Butler and County Attorney Garnett went to Frankfort and satisfied the Board that the wealth of Adair county had been properly listed and no raise was made Seven per cent on a mill ¬ ion and a quarter dollars would be savef d to the county the credit is due Judge Butler and County Attorney Garnett G M Workman Deputy Elisor of Green county was accidentally shot and killed last Friday on Brush creek J B Marshall Elisor qnd Mr Work ¬ man here together Workman dis- mounted from his horse and was stoop¬ ing over to get a drink from a spring on the roadside when a pistol dropped from his pocket and was discharged taking effect in his neck He lived Workmah n 1 years and was a prompt and efficient officer and no better man Dead men cant scent roses Do not keep the Alabaster box ¬ es of your love and tenderness sealed up until your friends arc dead No no If you have but a word of cheer Speak it while I am alive to hear
