Bøkkerfjellet In 1851, fire guards were placed on Bøkkerfjellet.

From there they had a good view over the city, and

they could warn the inhabitants in case of fire by

firing the cannons. In 1902, three shots were fired

from cannons at Bøkkerfjellet. A big fire, which is

one of the worst in the history of Larvik, let the area,

Bøkelia, in ruins.

The coastline of Larvik

Larvik has a great coastline, with a lot of opportunities of travelling to other countries by boat. Larvik has a ferry named Superspeed 2, which has connection to Denmark. It’s owned by Color Line. We also have a lot of container shipping to other countries. The nature in Larvik is fantastic. Larvik is surrounded by beautiful nature.

Mølen

Mølen is a moraine from the ice

age. Here we can find heaps of

stones, that was made during the

ice age. Mølen is 300-400 meters

wide.

At Mølen you can see big and

small rock piles. The piles are

viking graves and therefor it is

illegal to move or remove rocks

from the piles.

You can also discover over 300

different bird types there.

Our Harbor

• This is our new relaxing area in Larvik. In our harbor we have the Wave (culture center) and two lovely restaurants. Lately the harbor has been rebuilt from a boat terminal to a park where young and old people can enjoy themselves. Here you can find an area with skateramps, volleyball courts and beach handball courts. This is also a perfect place to have your boat, take a swim or just relax.

Lardal Ski Center Only a 45 minutes drive from Larvik, there is a nice place to go

skiing and relax. In the summer you can bike down these hills.

Kaupang The Vikings

Kaupang was the first known Norwegian trading outpost. It was

founded in 780s, and it is the first Norwegian city. Kaupang had

connection to Europe.Kaupang is only 7 kilometers east of Larvik.

Here scientists have discovered a lot of graves, jewelleries, weapons

and other viking treasures. Now it’s built a museum there. Here you

can read the history of Kaupang and look at the exhibit of treasures.

During the summertime the tourists can take part in a real viking life.

Thor Heyerdahl

• The famous adventurer and scientist Thor Heyerdahl is from Larvik. Perhaps he is most famous for his expeditions with Ra 1 and 2, Tigris and Kon- Tiki.

• He wanted to prove how the first people arrived Polynesia from South-America. It was the unchangeable wind that could carry them over a the Pacific Ocean.

• They used a float made of a special type of wood to sail with, the float was named Kon-Tiki. They used 101 days from Callao, Peru to Polynesia.

• Thor Heyerdahl also did researching on Easter Island.

• After the big expeditions, Thor Heyerdahl retired.

Fritzøe Verk

• The Fritzøe-business` history goes all the way back to before Larvik was founded. The iron work was built in the 1640s.

Herregården

• Herregården is one of the few beautiful buildings made of wood in baroque and rococo ever in Norway. Count Gyldenløve founded it as his residence the 16th of August 1677, just after Larvik was founded in 1671.

• In 1821 Herregården was owned by the community of Larvik. They used it as a theater, school for poor people, courtroom, intermediate school, residence for the priest, headmaster and the houseporter.

Oslo

• Is the capital in Norway. Before the name was Oslo named Christiania. Today live ca 620 000 people there.

• In Oslo we have many things to be proud of, like Holmenkollen and the new opera house.

• The opera house was build in 2003 and ended in 2008. the house together cost 4,4 milliard.

Bergen • Bergen is the second largest city in Norway with a

population of 265.000. Bergen is located in the county of Hordaland on the south-western coast of Norway.

• It is the unofficial capital of Western Norway and sometimes also referred to as the Atlantic coast capital of Norway.

• Bergen's harbour is one of Norway's largest and one of Europe's largest ports.

• The city centre of Bergen is located among a group of mountains known as the Seven Mountains, although the number is a matter of definition.

• Few buildings from the oldest period remain, the most significant being St Mary's Church from the 12th century.

Bodø

• Bodø is a town and is the capital of Nordland county.

• Is the largest urban area in Nordland county, and the second-largest in North Norway.

• The city lies just north of the Arctic Circle where the midnight sun is visible from 2 June to 10 July, the sun is not visible from the city from early December to early January.

• Average number of sunhours in Bodø is highest in June with 221 hours.

• The strongest tidal current in the world, with water speeds reaching 22 knots is Saltstraumen, situated about 30 kilometres southeast of Bodø.

Kongsberg • Kongsberg is located at the southern end of

Norway.

• The town was founded in 1624 under the name Konings Bierg by Danish-Norwegian king Christian IV as a mining community.

• Today, Kongsberg is perhaps best known for being the home of Norway's major defense contractor, Kongsberg Gruppen.

• Kongsberg is also known for its old silver mines. In 1770, the mines employed about 4,000 workers, and the town was the second largest in Norway.

• Kongsberg is also home to the Mint of Norway, which makes Norwegian coins. It was established in 1686.

Honningsvåg

• Norway’s northernmost town is Honningsvåg.

• The city is located in Nordkapp municipality. The main industry is fishing industry and tourism.

• There are about 2.500 inhabitants in Honningsvåg.

Trondheim

• Is a town in Sør-Trøndelag county. Trondheim is Norway’s third largest city with it’s 176.000 inhabitants.

• Nidaros Cathedral is the most famous building in Trondheim. It was a built for about 7-800 years ago.

• Trondheim also has the second largest university in the country.

Lillehammer

• Lillehammer is a town in Oppland county. Lillehammer is located at the north end of the lake called Mjøsa.

• There are about 26.000 inhabitants in Lillehammer.

• Lillehammer is best known for the Winter Olymics in 1994.

Tønsberg

• Tønsberg is a town in Vestfold county. Larvik is also from Vestfold county.

• It is Norway’s oldest town and the biggest town in Vestfold. The most famous square in Tønsberg is Slottsfjellet.

• The business was dependent for a long time of whaling and shipping.

• There are about 40.000 inhabitants in Tønsberg, and there are not more than 100 km from Oslo.

Stavanger

• Stavanger is a town in Rogaland county. There are about 130.000 inhabitants in the town.

• It is a coastal town boarding to the sea in the west and Boknafjorden in north-east.

• In the early days of the 20th century fishing was the main industry. Canning industry became very important for the area in the middle of the century.

• Stavanger was the capital of canning, but now is Stavanger the capital of oilindustry in Norway.
