Fr. Tomas Hurtado

Dear Community of St. Augustine:

Do you remember what happened at the beginning of the COVID 19 pandemic? Many of the things we need most began to be scarce and the people started to try to accumulate them fearing they would be completely gone from the supermarkets. What happen when the hurricane season is in full swing? People begin to buy non-perishable food, water, and other essentials in great quantities to be sure they will not be deprived when a hurricane hits the place where they live. Considering these examples, it is easier to understand Jesus’ parable in the Gospel of this weekend, (Mt 25:1 -13).

In this occasion, Jesus speaks to His disciples and teaches us about the Heavenly Kingdom using again the image of the wedding banquet. In this Gospel, St. Matthew makes a clear reference to two attitudes found in our lives: the one of those who get ready for the banquet ahead of time, and that of those who do not, thinking they have plenty of time to prepare themselves.

In these difficult moments we are experiencing, many have prophesied that the end of time is beginning, while many others are sure this is the end. There are countless theories that emphasize and even recommend accumulating material things for that moment in which the Lord will come in glory and majesty, but I think that our preparation should be rather spiritual.

Jesus says it clearly: “Stay awake, for you know neither the day nor the hour” (Mt 25:13). We should be always ready to meet the Lord, we should not wait to the last minute, to have a crisis, or for pain and suffering to shake our lives.

How good would it be if the same effort we make to prepare ourselves materially, we would dedicate it to prepare ourselves spiritually. We have the food that never perishes and gives us eternal life, Jesus! We have the water that quenches the thirst of our soul, Jesus! We have the light that illuminates the darkness of our spirit, Jesus!

Do we need anything else? Yes! We need to be always ready not to run out of the oil of the faith, so that with our lamps lit Jesus will tell us come in with me to the banquet.

Mateo 25,13

Grandparent Scam Scam artists will use any leverage they can get to separate you from your money. In grandparent scams, scammers pose as panicked grandchildren in trouble, calling or sending messages urging you to wire money immediately. If someone calls or sends a message claiming to be a grandchild, other family member or friend desperate for money:

Resist the urge to act immediately – no matter how dramatic the story is.

Verify the caller’s identity. Ask questions that a stranger couldn’t possibly answer. Call a phone number for your family member or friend that you know to be genuine. Check the story out with someone else in your family or circle of friends, even if you’ve been told to keep it a secret.

Don’t send cash, gift cards, or money transfers – once the scammer gets the money, it’s gone!

Don’t answer the phone from an unknown number – If it is important, they will leave a voice mail.

Do trust your instincts. If something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t.

If you think that you have been involved in a fraud or know of someone who might be, contact your local law enforcement. If you aren’t sure, and have questions, contact law enforcement.

PROTECT YOURSELF

FROM SCAMS PROTÉJASE DE
