Querida Comunidad de San Agustín:

El Adviento siempre es un nuevo comienzo. Comenzamos un nuevo Año Litúrgico en el cual escucharemos el Evangelio según San Marcos y comenzamos la preparación para la Navidad.

En este Primer Domingo de Adviento reflexionamos sobre la importancia de estar preparados pues no sabemos cuándo nos encontraremos con el Señor. La llegada del Señor no sólo será al final de los tiempos o cuando muramos; como nos decía el mensaje del Evangelio de la semana pasada – Solemnidad de Cristo Rey, Dios nos sale constantemente al encuentro en los que necesitan de nuestra ayuda. ¿Qué debemos hacer? Debemos tener los ojos abiertos para darnos cuenta de la llegada del Señor a nuestra vida.

Dios viene a nosotros de diferentes maneras: puede ser en un amigo que nos llama por teléfono para contarnos sus problemas, o en un familiar que necesita de nuestra atención o compañía, o en un extraño que pasa por nuestro lado y necesita nuestra ayuda. Muchos cristianos quizás están distraídos y no se dan cuenta cuando el Señor llega a su vida. ¿Qué les ha pasado? El orgullo, el individualismo, sentimientos de superioridad no les permiten ver qué ocurre a su alrededor. Cuando nos centramos en nosotros mismos podemos pasar por alto que a nuestro lado hay alguien que necesita de nosotros.

¿Qué podemos hacer para permanecer alerta? Debemos darle importancia a nuestra vida espiritual, que los asuntos cotidianos de la vida no nos impidan orar, reflexionar con la palabra de Dios, acercarnos a recibir los Sacramentos, y hacer actos de bondad y obras de misericordia. Como cristianos, debemos estar haciendo nuestro trabajo constantemente; Jesús espera que nosotros, Sus discípulos, nos encarguemos de hacerlo presente en nuestro mundo.

¿Estamos preparados para recibir al Señor? Jesús nos advierte, “¡Permanezcan alerta!” (Mc 13, 33).

Como todos ya saben, queremos restaurar nuestro ofertorio. Quiero expresarles mi agradecimiento a todos los que nos han hecho llegar su tarjeta de compromiso, a todos los que están orando por este esfuerzo que hacemos, a todos los que se esforzarán y darán un poco más semanalmente, y a todos los que se han mantenido haciendo sus contribuciones. ¡GRACIAS! Que Dios multiplique su generosidad y los siga bendiciendo abundantemente.

Dear Community of St. Augustine:

Advent is always a new beginning; it marks the beginning of the Liturgical Year, during which we will listen to readings from the Gospel of St. Mark and we start preparing for Christmas.

In this First Sunday of Advent we reflect about the importance of being prepared because we do not know when we will meet the Lord. The coming of the Lord will not take place at the end of time or when we die, as the message of the Gospel told us last week – the Solemnity of Christ, the King. God comes to us constantly in the person of those who need our help. What should we do? We should have our eyes open to realize when the Lord comes to our lives.

God comes to us in different ways: it could be through a friend who calls us by phone to talk to us about his problems, or through a relative who needs our attention or our company, or through a stranger who passes by us and needs our help. Many Christians perhaps are distracted and do not realize that the Lord has come to their lives. What has happened to them? Pride, individualism, feelings of superiority will not let them see what is going on around them. When we concentrate on ourselves, we cannot realize that there is someone next to us who needs our help.

What could we do to be and stay alert? We should give to our spiritual lives the importance it deserve and not allow that the things of our daily lives will keep us from praying, we should reflect with the Word of God, receive the Sacraments and do acts of kindness and mercy. As Christians, we should be doing our work constantly; Jesus expects that we, His disciples, will take care of making Him present in our world.

Are we prepared to meet the Lord? Jesus warns us: “Be Alert”! (Mc 13:33).

As all of you know, we want to restore our offertory. I want to express my gratitude to all who have sent us their commitment card, to all who are praying for this effort we are making, to all who will make the effort and will give a little more every week, and to all who kept making their contributions, THANK YOU! May God multiply your generosity and continue to bless you abundantly.

Parish News

FOOD DRIVE This weekend we will be handing out the bags for non-perishables groceries. You can donate as few or as many food items as you want. The food items will be given to the Sharing Center (Seminole County). Please bring your food bags back to the church next weekend December 5th & 6th. Together we will help those in need. Thank you for your support.

ADVENT GIVING TREE As we prepare for the coming of the Christ Child, we reach out to those in need with the St. Augustine Parish tradition of the Advent Giving Tree. This year we are sharing our blessings with the following agencies: Boys Town and Christian Sharing Center. Our Advent Giving Tree will be in the Narthex from November 28th - December 14th. We ask the parishioners to:

Choose an ornament from the tree Each ornament is labeled with a gift item Purchase your gift and attach the ornament to the gift Bring your unwrapped gift to the church

Jesus waits for us in the Blessed Sacrament. He waits for our little Acts of faith, adoration, love, thanksgiving, repentance, reparation and charity that we can offer Him as we contemplate -- His Divine Majesty -- in the Blessed Sacrament.

COLECTA DE ALIMENTOS Este fin de semana repartiremos las bolsas para comestibles no perecederos. Puede donar la cantidad de alimentos que desee. Marcando el comienzo del año litúrgico de la Iglesia, las cuatro semanas de Adviento nos llevan a la celebración de la Navidad. Las vistas y los sonidos familiares del Adviento te despiertan en la disposición para recibir a nuestro salvador, al tiempo que agudiza nuestro sentido de la necesidad de redención del mundo y del gran misterio de que Dios se hace humano para nosotros. Una forma buena y piadosa de ayudarnos en nuestra preparación para el Adviento ha sido el uso de la corona de Adviento. Tómate un tiempo para la meditación y la reflexión cada día de Adviento recordando ofrecer a Dios tus dones de amor y gratitud. Juntos esperamos el nacimiento del Salvador. Que tu fe se refresque mientras te mantienes abierto al amor de Dios durante esta temporada santa de Adviento.

Marking the beginning of the Church's liturgical year, the four weeks of Advent lead us to the celebration of Christmas. Advent's familiar sights and sounds stir in us a readiness to receive our savior, while sharpening our sense of the world's need for redemption and of the great mystery of God's becoming human for us. A good, pious way to help us in our Advent preparation has been the use of the Advent wreath. Take time for meditation and reflection each day of Advent by remembering to offer God your gifts of heartfelt gratitude and love. Together we await the birth of the Savior. May your faith be refreshed as you keep yourself open to God's love during this Holy season of Advent.
