Music and visual art have always existed hand-in-hand. This relationship is explored in Noise Makers, a group exhibition featuring Justin Camilli, Matt Goad, Chad Mount, Denny Schmickle and Aaron Whisner opening on Friday, December 13 at MAINSITE Contemporary Art, 122 E. Main, Norman.

“There’s a language to both art and music that you’ll find running through and combining in the works featured in Noise Makers,” said Joshua Boydston, gallery manager of MAINSITE Contemporary Art and curator of the exhibition. “These artists all come armed with alternative and progressive sensibilities, and there’s a rebelliousness to these pieces that manifest themselves in such drastically different ways with each artist. You can see how their musical influences take shape in their art and their design sensibilities tie back to what they listen to. It’s an interesting give and take that I think visitors will be able to see in these pieces.”

The artists hail from across Oklahoma and Kansas and work in a variety of different mediums.

Justin Camilli is a printmaker and musician who has lived across the Southwest, currently residing in Lawrence, Kansas. His imaginative and often darkly mysterious pieces are exemplified in the cover he created for Oklahoma City indie rock outfit Tallows.

Matt Goad is an Oklahoma City artist who has worked professional as a graphic designer and illustrator for nearly 20 years, though he’s only recently made the jump to painting on canvas. His whimsical, geometric paintings of animal and nature draw inspiration from classical graphic design and the pop art reproduction of the mid-twentieth century. He has designed countless concert posters and album covers over the years and currently fronts Oklahoma indie act Feel Spectres.

MUSIC AND VISUAL ART COLLIDE IN NOISE MAKERS

Chad Mount is an Oklahoma-based artist who works in illustration, painting and more. His work has appeared in exhibitions across North America, Asia and Europe. Mount has worked with bands like Horse Thief and Brother Bear. Recently, he has experimented with projection mapping, a technological art form that turns objects into a surface for video projection, which he combined with live painting at a recent performance alongside the Canterbury Chorale Society.

Denny Schmickle is a Tulsa-based artist and graphic designer who specializes in hand-printed silkscreen concert posters and gallery installations. He has designed posters for the likes of Rilo Kiley, Ratatat, The Melvins, BRONCHO and Meat Puppets.

Aaron Whisner is a Tulsa-based artist and designer who works in screen-printed posters, apparel and gallery installations. His street-art influenced art and designs have found their way into publications like CMYK Magazine, and he has designed posters for Jurassic 5, Caribou and Band of Horses.

Additionally, Noise Makers will showcase an audio-visual installation created by Norman New Wave band Depth & Current.

The Library Gallery features Norman Arts Council Individual Artist Award winner and photographer Sarah Engle-Barnett.

The Water Closet Gallery will house Place Make an exhibit from local painter and sculptor Anna Thomas.

The opening reception will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. on Friday, December 13 at MAINSITE Contemporary Art, 122 E. Main, Norman, Okla. in conjunction with December’s 2nd Friday Circuit of Art. The exhibit will run through Saturday, January 11 with a closing reception scheduled from 6 to 10 p.m. on Friday, January 10.

The Norman Public Arts Board is pleased to announce the winners of both of the latest phases of the Artist Designed Bicycle Racks and Park Sculpture Projects.

Bike rack designs by M. Lavina McKinzey, Laura Fortner, Christina Giacona and Patrick Conlon, David Littlejohn and Michael J. Wilson will be fabricated locally by McPherson Machine Shop. They are scheduled to be installed in Spring 2014.

The long-term goal of the Artist Designed Bike Racks Project is to increase the use of bicycles for transportation in the downtown while also supporting the state’s evolving arts culture. The project is made possible through support from Fowler Volkswagen of Norman.

“Artist designed bike racks are a natural fit for Norman,” said Larry Walker, Chair of the Norman Public Arts Board. “There is a great culture of biking for transportation in the downtown and Campus Corner areas and we wanted to create something to encourage even more people to pedal around.”

A design review board composed of local arts advocates, bicycle advocates and other community stakeholders worked with the Public Arts Board and were responsible for selecting the winning bike rack designs.

The Public Arts Board also selected the latest fiberglass duck sculptures to be installed in Norman parks. This phase asked artists to design sculptures with a patriotic theme, and all three selected sculptures will be placed in Reaves Park (located at Jenkins Avenue between Timberdell and Constitution). Reaves Park houses the Veterans’ Memorial and is also the site used for the City of Norman’s Annual Fourth of July activities.

The goal of this project is to create and install sculptures that encourage creativity from the viewers and users of the park. The completed sculptures will be installed and dedicated in Spring 2014.

Evan Davenport, Jae Won Jung and Aimee Rook submitted the winning sculpture designs. The Public Arts Board continues to develop new community art projects and strives to expand Norman’s reputation of being an arts supportive community. These projects are supported by donations to the Art in Public Places Fund through utility bills and fund raising efforts by the board.

NORMAN PUBLIC ARTS BOARD ANNOUNCES SELECTIONS FOR LATEST BICYCLE RACKS AND PARK SCULPTURES INSTALLATIONS

Identity is defined as the set of characteristics that enable an entity to be definable and distinguishable from others. While we can list these characteristics about ourselves, we must acknowledge that this list of traits is not static. The reality of our personal identity is that it is not only fluid but also self-assigned. As individuals we have control of the construction of our own identity. In a less intentional mode, we grow and change as humans while our identity evolves with us.

The announcement by the Oxford Dictionaries that the 2013 Word of the Year is ‘selfie’ indicates that our understanding of identity has grown to accommodate a new mode and method of presentation. Yet this just may be the most recent incarnation in the long history of self-portraiture that has been a staple of artistic practice for centuries. We seek submissions

from artists whose work interrogates self-identification and self-presentation. Submissions may explore the fluidity of identity or identities defined by culture, gender, nationality, religious beliefs, etc. We welcome work from all media including performance and installation.

Please submit images of your work along with artist name, titles, dimensions, and medium. For performance and installation proposals, please include a brief description of your idea along with duration time, dimension, etc. that is relevant. Each artist may submit up to five works.

This exhibition will be installed at MAINSITE gallery in Norman from February 14 – March 14, 2013.
