20132013 Pride Parade Grand Marshal Pride Parade Grand Marshal

Libertee Belle

The restaurant Industry brought him to Birmingham in 1985 to manage the Steak & Egg Kitchen, also known as the “Fag & Drag” (now the Purple Onion) on Southside. After seeing an article in the Birmingham News about the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia, he chose to use it as his nom-de-plume to write a gossip column for the Alabama Forum. He entertained and in-formed with columns such as “Under the Barstool” and countless news stories under the names R.M Simoneau and Sean Robert Michaels for many years. Libertee also found a platform for her political views by becoming a local celebrity on the morning call-in shows on local radio, challenging the likes of Russ and Dee Fine, Matt Murphy and even Paul Finebaum. Libertee even made an unsuccessful run for City Council. Libertee has appeared one the stage of just about every Gay Bar that has existed since her arri-val in this city. Wherever she called her “bar home” she has worked tirelessly year after year to raise money for Pride. In 1989, when Birmingham held its First Gay Pride Parade, Libertee was the only Drag Queen to participate. Fearing any hostile incident, the Police Department placed Libertee at the end of the Parade for her “safety”. In every Parade since, Libertee has brought up the rear of the Parade as she will as Grand Marshal. When Central Alabama Pride was formed in 1989, Libertee was a founding board member and

her name (well… Ronald Simoneau) appears on our incorporation and our by-laws. To our

knowledge, Libertee is the only person who has participated in every Pride Parade and to cele-

brate her 25th we can think of no one in this city more deserving of the title of Grand Marshal!

This year’s Grand Marshal is probably one of the Most Loved, Most Hated and Most Misunderstood individu-als to ever grace a city’s LGBT Community! Libertee Belle was born Ronald Simoneau (in a year that she will not reveal) in Nashua, New Hampshire and spent a great part of his childhood in Blackpool, England being schooled by the Sisters of the Holy Cross. At the age of 12 Ronnie moved back to Nashua to settle with his Grandparents. Ronnie began dab-bling in Drag while still in High School and can enter-tain you with non-stop stories of his early years (get him to tell you the one about Chrysanthemum). After finishing High School he served 6 years in the US Navy. After leaving the Navy, he studied Journalism at Portland State University where he was living as a woman under the name Ramona Simmons. After earning his BA he wrote for “the Northwest Fountain” a Gay Newspaper in Portland and performed Dahl and Penney’s Show Lounge. She graced the cities of San Francisco, Boston, Baltimore, and New Orleans under various names before settling in Birmingham.
