The colour green

People have searched for a perfect green pigment for centuries. Despite the wide variety of green in nature, it was notorious for being a hard colour to come by and work with. The ancient Greeks tended not to use the colour, and so it was not included as one of the four classical colours of Greek painting —yellow, red, black and white. The Romans, however, soaked copper plates in wine and created verdigris: a green pigment obtained through the weathering of the metal. They used the dye wherever they could, from mosaics to frescos and stained glass.

The colour green relates to balance and harmony. From a colour psychology perspective, it is the great balancer of the heart and the emotions, creating equilibrium between the head and the heart. From a meaning of colours perspective, green is also the colour of growth, spring, renewal and rebirth. Despite the colour green’s emotionally positive connotations, it has also taken on associations with the supernatural. It is the opposite of red —the colour of blood— in colour theory.

Jim Thompson has collaborated with interior and architectural extraordinaire Gert Voorjans to create an exuberant fabric collection. Sharing Jim Thompson’s penchant for vibrance, colour is a key component of Gert’s designs. His schemes are notoriously unconventional, always innovative and surprising. Gert Voorjans for Jim Thompson is no exception, aiming to seductively lure interior designers to embrace exciting and daring combinations in their projects. A whole spectrum of colours have been mixed together in order to create inviting rooms that are warm, artistic, livable, and one of a kind. To understand more about his creative direction, we asked Gert about the complex influences behind his work.

What is the inspiration for this collection?I have created fabrics that can be used to furnish complete interiors, ranging from upholstery to wallcoverings. It is an exuberant collection based on our own historic documents, samples and fabrics, but with references to French and Italian colourists and avant-garde artists. Does the collection have a running theme?We have not only included silks, I also opted for cotton and linen fabrics, and even passementeries. The collection is very diverse, ranging from rustic and checked fabrics to ivy motifs, sophisticated damasks, and colourful trimmings. By using this approach, I hope to reach out to a broad audience, so that more people can enjoy part of my creative universe.

What key words would you use to describe the collection?Eccentric, richly layered, customized, refreshing, inspiring, colourful, distinctive, to name just a few. But above all: naive, unexpected and artistic. Why is Jim Thompson and Gert Voorjans a good match?I have been integrating Jim Thompson fabrics into my pro jects for as long as I can remember, so designing a collection for the house was a very exciting challenge. And most of all, I am a great admirer of the Jim Thompson story. I love to create environments that are richly layered with influences from the East and the West, suffused with colours. I believe that these characteristics relate well to the Jim Thompson style and that is why I think that our collaboration is the perfect match.

Key features of the collection include a range of colourful silk weaves and wool épingle stripes, a timeless, rustic checked design, bold prints with playful patterns inspired by 20th century art, and daring trimmings in bright shades, created to co-ordinate beautifully with the fabrics from the collection. In keeping with the diverse theme, there is a sense of juxtaposition as apparent opposites are brought together, like roughness and softness, and rusticity and refinement. This collection is quintessentially Gert Voorjans –expect the unexpected.

Passementerie

Trimming can be traced back to the nomadic tribes of the Middle East. Cords were made to help construct tents and woven bands were used to tie provisions onto pack animals during travelling. Eventually, some of these useful materials evolved into a decorative form as artisans began to play with the medium. But it wasn’t until the 16th century in France that these soft materials, often used to prevent the unraveling of a cord or knot for cushions or draperies, became a recognized art form called ‘passementerie’ –literally meaning ‘turning by the hand’. The Artists Guild of passementiers was created and a seven-year apprenticeship was required to become a master. Soon, their fine fabrics and furnishings were used to embellish the French aristocracy’s noble residences. Passementerie reached beyond interior decoration and became a sign of economic status and social distinction, especially when used on clothing.
