Dinosaur Encounters at theNatural History Museum of Los Angeles County

Welcome to IMTAL Global Conference 2018: Lighting the Spark, Feeding the Flame. We are indebted to our friends and kind hosts at The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, the La Brea Tar Pits & Museum, and the Skirball Cultural Center. Thank you for opening your doors to us.

Combustion requires oxygen, heat, and fuel. The devastating fires that that have been raging throughout the state are a potent reminder that conflagrations begin with a single spark.

We intend for these sessions to strike the spark of imagination and possibilty, to fuel your creative endeavors, and to breathe new life into your theatrical programming. The aftermath of an inferno is, inevitably, renewal.

Wield the torch proudly.

- Douglas Coler, IMTAL President

KEYNOTE & WORKSHOP

Liberation Arts and Community Engagement (LACE)Brent Blair, PhD

Liberation Arts and Community Engagement (LACE) is a praxis that employs popular theatre in an interactive method towards the aim of socio-political transformation, popular education, and community healing.

Communities at the margins of power are often hard-pressed to translate their passions into sustainable actions, primarily thwarted by the multiple challenges of educating people about the urgency, engaging members of their community in a process of action, and designing savvy and sophisticated responses to often complex and dehumanizing narratives of oppression. LACE provides opportunities for communities to take the initial spark of their resistance and nourish it in a technique of thoughtful, interactive theatre exercises. The method involves game play, image creation, embodied critical analysis, and enacted community strategizing through the creation of interactive scenes, primarily informed by the philosophy of Theatre of the Oppressed. The goal is the production, not of art, but of liberation.

In traditional theatre, the product of the creative process is art; in LACE work, the language is art, but the anticipated product is social transformation. The process is highly critical, extremely engaged, and ultimately democratic. The group is transformed from a top-down structure to a more horizontal, leaderful experience through the embodied practice of art, theatre, and embodied exploration of challenging ideas.

September 10 - 12, 2018 • Los Angeles, CA 6

Wednesday, September 129 - 9:55am Keeping the Human in History: Empathy, Costumed Historical Interpretation, & Reaching Underserved Communities Empathy is a vital human need and dynamic storytelling should be available to all. By keeping the human in history, a chain reaction of empathy is created: for people of the past, to each other in the present, and a legacy for those in the future. A performance piece of a WWI volunteer speaker for the Four Minute Men serves as a prototype to show that compact performances can be utilized by smaller museums. The content is timely because of the war’s centennial and also engages discussion on how we can reach outside the museum for underserved markets. Presenter: Stephanie Vickers, University of North Alabama Performance with Discussion

10 - 11:30am You Can Do It All (with a little help from your friends) (concurrent) In 2018, the Littleton Museum mounted its first museum theatre program, a one-act play called The Blackout. This was the culmination of a three-year process which was accomplished only with support from museum staff, and members of the Denver theatre community. This session hopes to inspire and reassure other museum professionals by outlining the process and highlighting obstacles and successes. Presenter: Suellen Winstead, Littleton Museum Presentation with Discussion

10 - 11:30am Burning, Burning, Burning: The Transformative Power of Story (concurrent) How do we convert what we know into effective and powerful stories for our readers and visitors? Stories are a fundamental part of being human— literally, story is the language of the brain. Stories provide context and meaning. Through their power, we emotionally engage our audiences, enrich their experiences and their lives, and persuade them to actions both great and small. In this highly interactive session, we explore the transformative power of story, aspects of story that help us make sense of what we hope to communicate, and at least three techniques to help convert chaos into clarity. Presenter: Judy Fort Brenneman, Greenfire Creative, LLC Workshop

11:45 - 12:30pm “Decolonizing” Interpretation: UsingTheatretoFacilitateDifficultConversations We are familiar with using theatre to engage visitors in the stories that our museums and historic sites tell. But how can we use theatre to scrutinize those stories and openly address difficult subjects that often are glossed over or ignored to avoid conflict and controversy? To serve as a jumping-off point for this discussion, the session will begin with a reader’s theatre performance of “Telling the Story of a Landscape.” This 10-minute play opened the Accokeek Foundation’s 2017 Dialogue on Race, Agriculture, and Living History, a one-day workshop that brought together representatives from DC-area museums, historic sites, universities, and Foundation stakeholders. The idea for a dialogue began two years earlier when Accokeek Foundation staff started asking if it was time to “decolonize” the Foundation’s National Colonial Farm after an African American interpreter told her supervisor that she could no longer portray an enslaved person and a high school intern admitted to hiding any time a visitor walked on to the colonial farm site for fear they would think he was “playing a slave.” Participants are encouraged to bring their own stories of how using theatre has helped them tackle difficult subjects or difficult subjects/situations for which they would like ideas for a “theatrical” strategy.
