Corey Lyon is in his second season at the helm of the ULM softball program. He was introduced as the program’s head coach on June 27, 2014.

Lyon led the 2015 ULM softball team to its first 30-win season and record over .500 since 2001. The Warhawks placed fourth in the Sun Belt Conference tournament despite being chosen seventh in the SBC Preseason Coaches Poll. ULM finished the season ranked second in the nation in stolen bases per game (2.75) and 35th in the nation in triples per game (0.25) with both marks leading the SBC.

The 2015 squad also set school records in team batting average (.296), slugging percentage (.425), on base percentage (.382), runs scored (284), RBIs (246) and most times hit by pitch (73) dating back to 1984. The HBP mark also ranked second in the nation.

Under Lyon’s tutelage, Rochelle Roberts snagged SBC First Team honors while Alexis Cacioppo and Miyuki Navarrete earned a spot on the SBC Second Team. Roberts and Melanie Coyne also cemented themselves on the College Sports Madness Sun Belt All-Conference Team. Additionally, Coyne was named to the Sun Belt Conference All-Tournament Team.

Faith Bohack, Cacioppo, Navarrete and Roberts also landed on the LSWA All-State team as honorable mention selections.

Lyon makes the transition to ULM from Southern Arkansas where he was the head coach for the last three seasons. In the season prior to his arrival (2011), the Lady Muleriders posted a record of 14-39. During the 2012 season, his first at Southern Arkansas, the team improved their win total by 12 games as it finished with 26 wins.

Year two (2013) saw another 20-plus win campaign as the Lady Muleriders won 27 games to mark the first time since 2006 (26 wins) and 2007 (27 wins) that the program had back-to-back 20-plus win seasons. During his first two seasons at the helm of the program, Lyon guided the program to 53 wins – a mark of 10 more wins than the four seasons prior to his arrival (43 wins from 2008 to 2011).

This past season, Lyon’s club won 37 games en route to the Great American Conference tournament title and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. The Lady Muleriders came out of the loser’s bracket to win three straight games and claim the GAC title including a pair of shutout wins over top-seeded South-eastern Oklahoma State. Following the GAC championship, Southern Arkansas competed in the NCAA Central Regional in Winona, Minn.

The 2014 club set a total of 31 school records and its NCAA tournament berth was the first in program history. The squad’s winning record (37-26) was the first winning season for the Lady Muleriders since the 2005 season. A total of 11 players were named All-GAC and three earned NCAA Division II All-Central Region honors.

In his three seasons in Magnolia, Ark., Lyon’s teams reached the conference tournament each season and a total of 25 players were named GAC All-Academic. He also had the first ever All-American in program history and had another player earn Academic All-American honors. His 90 total wins from 2012-2014 are the most in any three-year stretch in program history.

Before taking over at Southern Arkansas, Lyon was the head coach at Paris (Texas) Junior College where he compiled a record of 125-52 from 2009-2011. His teams reached the region tournaments all three seasons and his teams led Region XIV in homers each season.

His win percentage of .706 is the best in program history. The mark of .706 from 2009-2011 was the third best among the 30 junior colleges in Texas. He also had 23 players either named All-Conference or All-Region.

In his first season, the squad claimed their first ever conference title as they claimed the 2009 Region XIV Eastern Division Conference Championship. The club went on to finish as the runner-up at the regional tournament.

Prior to being at Paris JC, Lyon was head softball coach at Independent High School in Wichita, Kan., from 2005-2008, guiding his teams to a 65-19 mark over the four years. In the program’s two-year existence before his arrival, the school had never won a game. Lyon’s final two teams in 2007 and 2008 claimed league and regional championships, and his 2008 squad was the Kansas 3A state runner-up after finishing fourth in 2007.

While at Independent, Lyon also served as dean of students and was the head football coach from 2005-2007, guiding the 2007 team to the best record in school history.

Lyon received his B.S.E. in elementary education from Newman (Kan.) University in 1995 and his M.A. in school leadership from Baker (Kan.) University in 2005. He has three daughters, Cheyanne, Carson and Ciarra.

KELI HARRELL

Education:UAB, 2007

Keli Harrell enters her first season as the assistant coach for the ULM softball program. Harrell will serve as pitching coach for the Warhawks.

Harrell began her amateur career at East Carolina University and was a first-team all-conference selection and Conference USA Preseason Pitcher of the Year in 2006. Additionally, Harrell currently stands atop the career saves leaderboard (14) and second in career strikeouts (948) at ECU.

A native of Greenville, N.C., Harrell spent majority of her post-college era close to home, becoming a graduate assistant for her alma mater immediately completing her undergraduate degree in 2007. Harrell further developed her skills in recruiting, mentoring, and training athletes and organizing budget and travel en route to being part of an ECU staff that was named Conference USA Coaching Staff of the Year and Mideast Region Staff of the Year in 2010.

While in graduate school at ECU, Harrell spent her summers as a pitcher in professional softball, beginning in Michigan before travelling over-seas to the Netherlands and Austria. Harrell led the Twins (Netherlands) to the semifinals in league play and led the European Cup in strikeouts for the Superfund Wanderers (Austria).

Following her professional career, Harrell further honed her skills as an interim assistant softball coach at Queens University of Charlotte before spending the next three years as a coach for South Central High School in Winterville, N.C., leading the Falcons to two Coastal Confer-ence Championships (3A).

Harrell returned to her alma mater once more in January 2015 as interim assistant softball coach before joining Lyon’s staff.

Harrell holds a bachelor’s degree in family and community services and a master’s degree in sports management from ECU.

GRADUATE ASSISTANTMIYUKI NAVARRETE

Navarrete enters her first season as a graduate assistant coach under Corey Lyon after finishing up her decorated senior year in 2015, starting all 52 games at second base.

The San Jose, Calif., native cur-rently sits atop the leaderboard for most stolen bases in program

history (119). Navarrete was named to the 2015 Sun Belt All-Conference Second Team as well as the 2015 LSWA All-Louisiana Honorable Mention Team after her stellar play last season.

STUDENT ASSISTANTALEXIS CACIOPPO

Cacioppo enters her first season as a student assistant under Corey Lyon after starting all 52 games of the 2015 season with majority of her starts coming at third base.

The La Habra, Calif., native ended her ULM playing career with third-most runs batted in

in program history (131) and third most walks in program history (88). Cacioppo batted .361 her senior year which helped earn her 2015 Sun Belt Conference Second Team and LSWA All-Louisiana Honorable Men-tion honors.
