PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

I believe the Future of Architecture in Oklahoma is vibrant and sound!  Architects across the state are making Oklahoma better; protecting our citizens, creating economic growth, and enriching lives through great design ideas and inspiring buildings.  Oklahoma City, Tulsa, and many smaller Oklahoma towns are great places to live and raise a family.  We have made a difference in these communities. Thursday night’s design awards program will showcase your talents and recognize some of your best recent work.

But we need to keep learning and keep raising the bar.  This convention is designed to provide you two days of stimulating and informative speakers and sessions which will help you continue your growth as professionals.   The convention is back in Stillwater.  You might remember that Stillwater was the home of the first state symposium held in 1996, and remained the symposium’s home for many years following.  This symposium has evolved and grown into today’s two-day convention.

I look forward to seeing each of you in Stillwater on November 5th and 6th!

Best,

Randy Seitsinger, FAIA President, AIA Oklahoma

“The Missing Middle, Why Place Matters” 1 HSW

Jeffrey Sheppard, AIA Roth Sheppard Architects, Denver

Earlier this year the Denver Post Published an Op Ed authored by Sheppard entitled “Great City, Bad Buildings.” Within two weeks, Jeff received over 1500 emails (now up to 2500) from residents and neighborhood groups who felt the same and wondered why this was happening in Denver. The problem, contrary to many of the initial responder’s comments, was not density. It was a lack of commitment and passion on the part of city agencies, developers, contractors, and yes, even architects, to fully understand the implications of their decisions. This presentation explores what is happening in the multifamily housing market in Denver while making a case for ‘The Missing

Middle’ and a contextually layered approach to design.

Sheppard received his Masters of Architecture Degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1979. Following a teaching honorarium at the Institute and an apprenticeship at the Mother Earth News Magazine, he moved to Denver to join the prestigious design firm, W.C. Muchow and Partners. In 1983, Sheppard co-founded Roth Sheppard Architects with his partner, Herbert Roth, FAIA, and was named the Denver Chapter of the American Institute of Architect’s (AIA) Young Architect of the Year in 1989. Roth Sheppard was recognized as the AIA Western Mountain Region’s (WMR) ‘2012 Architectural Firm of the Year,” as well as the “Firm of the Year” for both AIA-Denver and AIA-Colorado in 2010.

“The Speculative City”

1.5 HSW

Marshall Brown, AIA Marshall Brown Projects, Chicago

There is a great deal of determinism at work in architecture today: obsessions with data, ecological

fear, and economic development, for example. This determinism is not an answer to the challenges of the 21st century, but instead rather symptomatic of the neoliberal world in which we live. Marshall Brown will argue that there are still others ways to imagine and to shape the world.

Marshall Brown is a licensed architect, urban designer and principal of Marshall Brown Projects. He is also an Associate Professor at the IIT College of Architecture where he served as Director of the Master of Landscape Architecture program from 2013-14. Brown has worked on several projects in Chicago, including the Navy Pier redevelopment with James Corner Field Operations and a master plan for the neighborhood of Washington Park. Brown also founded the urbanism, art and culture think tank NEW PROJECTS in collaboration with curator Stephanie Smith in 2011. In 2003, he founded the Yards Development Workshop, a studio that set out to hi-jack Frank Gehry’s Atlantic Yards project in Brooklyn, New York.

“Expanding the Profession through Entrepreneurial Activities”

1.5 LUs

Nathan Richardson, AIA Assistant Professor, OSU School of Architecture

Tom Spector, AIA, Ph.D., Professor OSU School of Architecture

This course presents the relationships between acquisition cost, financial leverage, capitalization rates, return on investments, risk and valuation in commercial real estate investment decisions, so that architects can better understand developer clients’ decision-making process. This introduction also paves the way for architects to leverage their expertise by engaging in real estate development themselves as a potentially important element in achieving their long-term financial goals.

Tom Spector, AIA, is Professor of Architecture at Oklahoma State University where he teaches the practice courses and in the comprehensive design studio. He has been active in real estate development in his home state of Georgia for many years as well as more recently in multifamily projects in Oklahoma City. Tom received his Ph.D in architecture from the University of California, Berkeley and his Masters of Architecture from Georgia Tech.

Associate Professor Nathan Richardson, AIA, teaches design, real estate, and entrepreneurship at the Oklahoma State University School of Architecture and holds a joint appointment at the School of Entrepreneurship as a Riata Faculty Fellow. The integration of design and development is a central theme of Nathan’s experience, practice, research and teaching. Nathan received his Master of Design Studies with Distinction from the GSD at Harvard University, where he also received the Ferdinand Colloredo-Mansfeld Prize for Superior Achievement in Real Estate Studies.

“Five Houses, Four States, Two Countries and One On the Fence.” 1 HSW

Eddie Jones, AIA, NCARB, Jones Studio, Phoenix, AZ

Jones will present an architectural travelogue exploring the climatic and cultural influences shaping Jones Studio buildings. He will also discuss the one fundamental quality he believes is necessary for the future of architecture in Oklahoma and around the world.

Edward (Eddie) Jones, with his business partner and brother Neal, was raised in the oil fields of Oklahoma. From a very early age the two bothers aspired to be architects and share a studio. He moved to Arizona in 1973 after graduating from Oklahoma State University.

He founded Jones Studio on June 8, 1979, three months before his 30th birthday. It was not until years later, Eddie realized he had begun his professional career on the birthday of his two major heroes, Frank Lloyd Wright and Bruce Goff. Jones’ long-standing implementation of sustainability and environmental design, matched with an extraordinary sensitivity to the factors that create space, has improved the experiences of those that occupy, and moreover, the spaces occupied.

“Women in Architecture: Shaping the Field” 1.5 LUs

Moderator: Lisa M. Chronister, AIA, LEED AP BD+C

Jana K. Phillips, FAIA, NCARB, LEED AP BD+C

Jennifer Born, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP BD+C

Elizabeth A. Windel, AIA

Women make up more than 40% of architecture students but only 25% of those employed in the profession and only 15% of licensed architects. And while the number of women in the profession continues to increase, they still face significant challenges related to career opportunities, job satisfaction, and work-life balance. This program will present information on the state of women in the profession, perspectives from the presenters’ combined 75 years of experience, strategies for maximizing women’s potential, and why supporting women is one of the best ways each of us can enrich the profession in the years to come.
