Dear Friends of UMKC Athletics,

On behalf of the UMKC Athletics Department, I want to once again thank you for your continued support of the Kangaroos. The generosity of so many great supporters has made the future bright for UMKC Athletics.

In reviewing this annual report, you will see that we made great strides on the competition venue and in the classroom in during the 2008-09 school year.

Last year’s athletic accomplishments made it one of the most successful years in our recent history, as four of our squads finished among the top two in The Summit League. Our men’s soccer and men’s tennis teams claimed Summit League Tournament titles, which led to NCAA Tournament appearances, while our men’s and women’s golf teams both finished as the league runner-up.

In the classroom, eight of our programs posted a cumulative 3.0 grade point average and as a department, we finished the year with a cumulative 3.09 GPA. Additionally, a number of our student-athletes received national academic recognition, which included a pair of student-athletes honored as finalists for the prestigious Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award.

This year has also seen the construction of our new on-campus soccer facility, the Durwood Soccer Stadium & Recreational Field. We broke ground in the construc-tion of this facility in December 2008, and we are anxiously awaiting its completion to allow our men’s and women’s soccer programs to compete at the venue in the fall of 2009.

We were also able to renovate the Student-Athlete Support Services Office (SASSO) during the last calendar year. This renovation gives our student-athletes the resources needed to continue in their academic successes, which is a priority of this department.

Finally, in April, our department received full NCAA Division I Athletics Certification. This is an outstanding achievement for our university, as it shows that our depart-ment is operating our athletics program in substantial conformity with operating principles adopted by the NCAA Division I membership. This accreditation process takes place once every 10 years and involved dozens of University and community members, and we are proud to have earned full accreditation.

2008-09 ATHLETIC

HIGHLIGHTS- Best year since 2000 with two team champions (men’s soccer, men’s tennis) and two runner-up finishers (men’s golf, women’s golf).

- Men’s soccer had a pair of student-athletes earn NSCAA Second Team all-Region honors. It was the first time in school history for the program to have more than one selection.

- Men’s tennis tied a school record with 14 victories, while three student-athletes earned all-league honors.

- Volleyball and softball both increased their win totals by substantial amounts. The volleyball team more than doubled their win total, as it went from five victories in 2007 to 13 wins in 2008. The softball team, meanwhile, went from eight wins in 2008 to 20 victories in 2009.

- Women’s tennis posted five victories and finished an even 4-4 in Summit League play. The five victories were the most for the program since 1999-00, while the four league wins were a single season school record.

- The men’s basketball and women’s basketball squads featured young squads and made great strides for the future. The men’s team defeated two Missouri Valley Con-ference opponents (Wichita State and Bradley), while the women’s squad finished with 12 victories, the most for the program since 2003-04.

- The track & field team saw jumper Marcus Lee qualify for the NCAA Championships in the triple jump. Lee was just the fourth male student-athlete in school history to qualify for the NCAA’s. As a team, UMKC crowned five champions at The Summit League Outdoor Championships and a total of seven titles between the indoor and outdoor championships.

- Garret Guthrie (men’s soccer) and Dane Brumagin (men’s basketball) were semifi-nalists and finalists, respectively, for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award.

2008-09 HIGHLIGHTSMEN’S BASKETBALL

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

- UMKC finished the season with a 7-24 overall record and a 3-15 mark in Summit League play.- The Kangaroos defeated a pair of Missouri Valley Conference schools in Wichita State and Bradley during the season. It was just the third time in school history for the squad to top a pair of MVC school in the same season. The victory at Wichita State, meanwhile, was the program’s first ever win in Wichita.- Dane Brumagin was selected as an honorable mention all-Summit League honoree following the season.- Spencer Johnson was selected as The Summit League Player of the Week on Dec. 22.- Spencer Johnson led the nation with five consecutive double-doubles from Dec. 4 to Dec. 18.- Dane Brumagin was named a semifinalist for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award. It was the first time in school history that a UMKC men’s basketball student-athlete has been a semifinalist and just the second Summit League player to be a semifinalist.- Dane Brumagin closed out his playing career with his name littering the UMKC career record books. The forward fin-ished as the sixth most prolific scorer with 1,374 points in a school record 118 games. He also ranked first in free throw percentage (.844), third in three point field goals (219), seventh in field goals (453), seventh in double figure scoring contests (58), eighth in three-point field goal percentage (.386), minutes (2850) and free throws (249), ninth in steals (110) and 10th in rebounds (400) and career starts (73).- Four UMKC student-athletes received Academic all-Summit League honorees, while one student-athlete was named to the Commissioner’s List of Academic Excellence.- UMKC averaged 1,855 fans in its 12 home contests, and the squad had three games with more than 2,400 fans in atten-dance.

- UMKC finished the season with a 12-18 overall record and a 7-11 mark in Summit League play despite field a team with nine newcomers, including seven true freshman. The 12 wins are the most for the program since the 2003-04 season (15) and the seven league victories are the most since the 2005-06 campaign (8).- The Kangaroos advanced to The Summit League Championship as the No. 7 seed where they dropped a quarterfinal contest to No. 2 Oakland, 73-66.- Junior Chazny Morris was a First Team all-Summit League selection after leading the league with a 17.5 scoring aver-age. She also paced the squad in both rebounds and steals on the year. Morris’ scoring average also ranked 45th in the nation in 2008-09 and her .407 three point field goal percentage was the 24th best mark in the country.- Chazny Morris was named The Summit League Player of the Week on Dec. 16 and she was named to the all-Tourna-ment team at the Holiday Beach Classic.- Chazny Morris joined an elite group in UMKC history, as she became just the ninth player to reach the 1,000-point mark in her career. At season’s end, Chazny pushed her career total to 1,285 points, which is just 190 points shy of the UMKC school record. The guard also surpassed the 500-point mark for single season scoring in 2008-09, as she is one of just three players in school history to accomplish the feat.- Seven student-athletes received Academic all-Summit League honors, while a pair of student-athletes were named to the Commissioner’s List of Academic Excellence.

2008-09 HIGHLIGHTSCROSS COUNTRY

MEN’S GOLF

- The UMKC men’s cross country team placed eighth at The Summit League Championships with 185 points, while the women’s cross country team finished ninth with 225 points.- Laban Mutai garnered Second Team all-Summit League honors after finishing ninth at the Championship. Mutai is the first all-league honoree for the team since the 2006 season.- Laban Mutai paced the Kangaroos in six of seven meets on the season, which included an 11th place showing at the Missouri State Classic and a team-best 98th place finish at the NCAA Midwest Regional.- Alex Harkins was the women’s top finisher in seven of eight meets on the season. Harkins tallied four top-15 finishes and a total of five top-30 showings on the season. - Five women’s student-athletes and four men’s student-athletes were named Academic all-Summit League selections, while a total of five student-athletes (three men/two women) where named to the Commissioner’s List of Academic Excellence.

- UMKC finished as the runner-up at The Summit League Men’s Golf Championship for the second straight season. The squad’s first round score of 271 was the second lowest round in school history and the 869 total was the team’s best score all-time at a league championship and the fourth best 54-hole total in the record books.- Three student-athletes garnered all-league recognition at the Championship. Michael Schnegelberger was a first team all-league selection, while Alex Hogben and Josh Taylor received second team all-league honors. It was Schnegelberger’s first first team honor and his second career all-league accolode, and Hogben’s second straight second team honor.- Alex Hogben was named The Summit League Golfer of the Week on March 12.- Alex Hogben, who had five top-15 finishes on the year, led the team in scoring average for the second straight year with a 73.09 clip. The mark is the fifth lowest scoring average in school history.- Michael Schnegelberger fired a final round 65 at the ASU Red Wolf Classic. The figure was the second lowest score in the UMKC record books. - Alex Hogben carded a career-low round of 67 at the ORU Shootout, which is tied for the sixth lowest score in school history.- Seven UMKC student-athletes earned Academic all-Summit League honors, while five student-athletes were named to the Commissioner’s List of Academic Excellence.

2008-09 HIGHLIGHTSWOMEN’S GOLF

MEN’S SOCCER

- UMKC finished as the runner-up at The Summit League Women’s Golf Championship with a 36-hole total of 657. It is the highest finish for the program since 2003 and the fifth second place showing in school history.- Three student-athletes garnered all-league honors. Kelsey Kipp was a first team selection after placing third, which is the highest placing individual for the ‘Roos since 1998. Chelsea Cadwell and Madison Maddox were second team honorees after tying for eighth place. The three selections are also tied for the most honorees in a single season in the record books.- Kelsey Kipp led the team in eight of 11 tournaments on the season, where she posted five top-10 finishes. She won the UALR Golf Classic in March with a school record 54-hole total of 221 strokes and was the individual runner-up at the ORU Shootout on Oct. 7. The win was the team’s first since the 2006-07 season, and it was the first for the squad against Division I opponents since 2001-02.- Kelsey Kipp was twice named The Summit League Golf of the Week. She received the honor on March 12 and April 1.- Chelsea Cadwell recorded a hole-in-one during the first round of the Drury Ledgestone Classic. The feat helped pro-pel the freshman to the individual title and ‘Roos to the team crown at the tournament.- As a team, UMKC posted five of the top-10 54 hole scores and five of the top-10 single round scores in school history.- Kelsey Kipp, Chelsea Cadwell and Sally Meiner’s scoring averages all ranked among the top-10 in a single season in school history.- Four student-athletes received Academic all-Summit League honors, while one student-athlete was named to the Commissioner’s List of Academic Excellence.

- UMKC claimed its third league tournament title in 2008, which qualified the squad for its third NCAA Tournament appearance in school history. The ‘Roos fin-ished with a 10-7-3 overall record, which included a 2-1-1 mark against ranked opponents. The 10 wins were the most for the program since the 2003 season.- UMKC won The Summit League Tournament after upsetting No. 1 seed Oakland. The Kangaroos topped the Grizzlies 4-3 in a shootout to advance to the NCAA Tournament. Ken Cooper was named the tournament MVP, while John Bayron Sosa, Bryan Perez and Brian Harris were all named to the all-tournament team.- Brian Harris was selected as The Summit League Offensive Player of the Year, becoming UMKC’s first such honoree since 2001. Harris and Bryan Perez were First Team all-Summit League selections, while John Bayron Sosa, Levi Coleman and John David Hernandez were second team honorees. Coleman was also named to the all-newcomer squad.- Brian Harris and Bryan Perez were each named Second Team NSCAA all-Midwest Region selections. Perez is the first player in school history to earn multiple NSCAA honors.- Brian Harris was named The Summit League Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 2, Sept. 15 after scoring the game-winning goal in the win at No. 3 Creighton and on Oct. 27 after scoring the sixth hat trick in school history in the victory over Oral Roberts.- Ken Cooper was named The Summit League Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 15 after leading the ‘Roos to a 1-0 shutout win at No. 3 Creighton. Cooper was also tabbed as the Soccer America Goalkeeper of the Week.- Matt Kopsky was named to the National Team of the Week by collegesoccernews.com on Sept. 15.- UMKC was featured on ESPNsoccernet for their role in the upset of No. 3 Creighton.- Bryan Perez named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week, to the Soccer America Team of the Week and as The Summit League Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 6 f0llowing the fifth hat trick in UMKC history in the 4-3 win over No. 19/21 Drake.- Bryan Perez named Summit League Offensive Player of the Week – Oct. 6- UMKC received votes in the NSCAA/adidas national rankings for the first time in school history on Oct. 7.- Garret Guthrie, Matt Kopsky and Brian Harris were all named to the CoSIDA District 7 Academic all-America team. Guthrie went on to earn Third Team ESPN/CoSIDA Academic all-America honors.- Brian Harris became the first men’s soccer student-athlete in UMKC history to earn NSCAA College Scholar all-America honors. He was also a first team selec-tion for the North/Central regional. Garret Guthrie was also a scholar all-region honoree.- Garret Guthrie became the first UMKC and Summit League student-athlete to be named a finalist for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award.- 12 student-athletes received Academic all-Summit League honors, while six student-athletes were named to the Commissioner’s List of Academic Excellence.

2008-09 HIGHLIGHTSWOMEN’S SOCCER

SOFTBALL

- Head Coach Anita Rodriguez and Assistant Coach Nikki Champe brought in 18 student-athletes to be a part of the inaugural women’s soccer program. The class consists of players from six different states with eight players hailing from Missouri. It consists of players from Ohio (4), Illinois (2), Nebraska (2), Iowa (1) and Kansas (1).- Six student-athletes were on campus during the spring semester, where they were enrolled in classes. The squad got off to a solid start academically, as it posted a 3.39 cumulative grade point average.- UMKC will begin women’s soccer in the fall of 2009 with an exhibition game against Northwest Missouri State at the new Durwood Soccer Stadium & Recreational Field. The regular season opener, meanwhile, will be a Aug. 22 game at Rockhurst.

- UMKC finished the 2009 season with a 20-34 overall record and a 10-14 mark in Summit League play. The 20 vic-tories are the most in a single season since the 2002 season and it is also just the fourth time in school history that the team has won at least 20 contests.- Kelly Fischer and Chelsea Hartwig were both honored as Second Team all-Summit League selections. They are the first pair of Kangaroos to earn league honors since the 2002 season, when UMKC had six players recognized on both the first and second team. Fischer and Hartwig were the first all-league honorees for UMKC since the 2005 season. - Samantha Hurst was named The Summit League Pitcher of the Week on April 13.- Betsey Hanley led the team with a .342 batting average, which is the eighth best mark in a single season in school his-tory.- Chelsea Hartwig hit a UMKC single season record eight long balls and finished with 25 RBIs, which are the sixth most in a single season in the record books.- The ‘Roos won six straight games from March 29 to April 10. It was the longest winning streak from the program since the 2002 season when the squad won 10 consecutive games.- Samantha Hurst finished her career with 309 strikeouts, which are the second most in the UMKC career record books.- 13 student-athletes received Academic all-Summit League honors, while six student-athletes were named to the Commissioner’s List of Academic Excellence.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

- UMKC finished with a 14-7 overall record and a 5-1 mark in Summit League play. The 14 wins are tied for the most victories in a single season in school history.- The ‘Roos claimed The Summit League Tournament title with a 4-2 win over top-seed Oral Roberts to earn a berth into the NCAA Tournament. UMKC fell in the first round of the NCAA’s to No. 6 Baylor, 4-0.- Bret Berryman was named The Summit League Newcomer of the Year, becoming the program’s first such honoree since 2000. Berryman and Patrick Smith were First Team all-Summit League honorees, while Gustavo Guerin was a Second Team all-Summit League selection. Smith is just the fifth player in school history to earn multiple first team all-league honors.- UMKC received five Summit League Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week honors throughout the season. Serge Ristivojevic was honored on Jan. 28, Patrick Smith received the accolade on Feb. 3 and on April 14, and Bret Berryman earned the honor on March 4 and March 31.- During the fall season, Serge Ristivojevic advanced to the Round of 16 at the Wilson/ITA Central Region Championships in singles and in doubles, while teaming with Gustavo Guerin. Both instances are belived to be the first time that UMKC has won a match at the event and the first time advancing to the Round of 16.- Patrick Smith won his final six singles matches that were played to their completion to tie him for the school record for most singles victories (14). His 13 wins at the No. 2 position, meanwhile, are a school record.- Gustavo Guerin finished in a tie for the seventh most singles wins (12) and a tie for the fifth most doubles victories (11) in a single season during his freshman campaign.- Six student-athlete earned Academic all-Summit League honors, while four student-athletes were named to the Commissioner’s List of Academic Excellence.

- UMKC finished with a 5-12 overall record and an even 4-4 mark in Summit League play, which put them fifth in the regular season standings. The five wins were the most for the program since the 1999-00 season, while the four league victories are the most in a single season in school history.- Emily Lindsay and Katherine Rist were honored as Second Team all-Summit League selections. Lindsay is just the fourth player in school history to earn all-league honors in consecutive years and the first to do so since 2003.- Daniela Amelunge was selected as The Summit League Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week on March 31.- Five student-athletes received Academic all-Summit League honors, while three student-athletes were named to the Commissioner’s List of Academic Excellence.- The women’s tennis team was recognized for top academic performance as part of the NCAA’s academic reform pro-gram. The squad was one of 58 women’s tennis programs in the nation to be recognized.

2008-09 HIGHLIGHTSTRACK AND FIELD

VOLLEYBALL

Indoor- The UMKC men’s team finished seventh at The Summit League Indoor Championships with 46 points, while the women’s team placed eighth with four points.- Marcus Lee won the indoor titles in the men’s triple jump and long jump events. He is the first Kangaroo student-athlete since 2004 to win multiple indoor titles and the first since 2001 to win two events in the same Championship.- Alex Lopez earned all-league honors after earning a silver medal in the 800-meter run.- Marcus Lee provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in both the triple and long jump. The last indoor qualifier for the UMKC men’s team came in the 1997 season.- Marcus Lee broke the school record in the triple jump at the Mule Relays, while Alex Lopex set a new school mark in the 800-meter run at the Iowa State Classic.Outdoor- The UMKC men’s team placed sixth at The Summit League Outdoor Championships with 67 points, while the women’s squad finished seventh with 23 points. The ‘Roos crowned five champions at the Championship (Marcus Lee- LJ & TJ, men’s 4x100-meter relay, Keenan Simmons - men’s 200M, Kimoya Harriott - women’s javelin).- The Kangaroos had eight competitors travel to Louisville to compete in the NCAA Mideast Regional, where the men’s squad tied for 27th with five points. Overall, a total of 42 teams competed in the Regional. - Marcus Lee took home the gold medal in the triple and long jump events at the Championship giving him the jump sweep during the indoor and outdoor seasons. He also set the school record and placed fourth at the NCAA Mideast Regionals, where became just the fourth male student-athlete in school history to qualify for the NCAA Championships.- Marcus Lee was named The Summit League Men’s Athlete of the Week on April 14. - Kimoya Harriott claimed gold in the women’s javelin throw at The Summit League Championships, where she broke the facility record in the event. Harriott also qualified for the NCAA Regionals and broke the UMKC school record in the women’s javelin. - Sara Hiller was named a CoSIDA District 7 Academic all-America selection.- 17 student-athletes (7 men/11 women) received Academic all-League honors, while 10 student-athletes (six men/four women) were named to the Commissioner’s List of Academic Excellence.

- UMKC finished with a 12-20 overall record and a 5-11 mark in Summit League play during the 2008 season. The win total more than doubles the 2007 total (5) and the 12 victories are the most for the program since the 2002 season.- The ‘Roos posted their first three-match winning streak since the 2005 season and they won their opening league match for the first time since 2003.- Christiana McQuin was named to the League’s all-Freshman Team.- Mandy Tipton broke the career digs record in the 3-1 win over Centenary. Tipton finished her career with 1,336 digs.- Brittany Fossier was named The Summit League Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 15 after breaking UMKC’s single match record for blocks with 11 in the win over Southeastern Louisiana.- Head Coach Geno Frugoli’s freshmen class led the team in virtually every statistical category, which included kills, digs, aces, blocks and hitting percentage.- UMKC signed a top-150 player in the nation as a part of its 2009 recruiting class.- 10 student-athletes were selected as Academic all-Summit League selections, while six student-athletes were named to the Commissioner’s List of Academic Excellence.- The volleyball team was recognized for top academic performance as part of the NCAA’s academic reform program. The squad was one of 49 schools in the nation to be recognized.

ACADEMIC SUCCESSFALL SEMESTER- Eight programs finished with grade point averages above 3.0. - The women’s cross country team posted the highest team GPA with a 3.39 average, while volleyball was second with a 3.31 GPA.- The nine women’s teams posted a 3.23 cumulative GPA, while the seven men’s teams had a 2.97 GPA.- A total of nine student-athletes posted perfect 4.0 GPAs during the fall semester.

SPRING SEMESTER- 10 of the 16 teams finished with a 3.0 or better grade point average for the spring semester.- The women’s cross country team had the top GPA among the teams with a 3.40 average.- The nine women’s squads had a 3.16 GPA, while the seven men’s programs had a 2.86 grade point average.- A total of 16 student-athletes had a perfect 4.0 grade point average during the spring semester.

2008-09 ACADEMIC YEAR- As a department, UMKC finished the 2008-09 aca-demic year with a 3.09 grade point average.- More than half (9) of UMKC’s athletics teams fin-ished with at least a 3.0 grade point average.- The men’s golf and volleyball programs posted the highest GPA for the year at 3.31.- Along with men’s golf and volleyball, the women’s soccer (3.39), women’s cross country (3.29), wom-en’s tennis (3.25), softball (3.24), men’s tennis (3.18) and women’s golf (3.17) and men’s soccer (3.01)teams all posted a GPA above 3.0.- The Kangaroos also have a pair of student-athletes that currently boast a perfect 4.0 cumulative grade point average.

2008-09 UMKC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee

PURPOSE OF SAAC- To encourage communication between the Athletics Department and student-athletes.- To provide a forum for student-athletes to discuss issues of concern regarding Athletics Department policies and procedures, as well as current and proposed legislation by the NCAA.- To promote unity between and among athletic teams at UMKC.- To encourage support for the UMKC Athletics Department in both the campus and local communities through service activities.

STUDENT-ATHLETE RESPONSIBILITIES- To attend all monthly meetings and SAAC related activi-ties.- To organize team members to participate in an SAAC related activities.- To inform teammates of SAAC meeting discussions and obtain feedback and insight to be used to best represent the interests of the team.- To serve as mentors for incoming freshman and transfer student-athletes.

COMMUNITY SERVICE- Each team will be required to perform one community service act per year.- The SAAC will be responsible for one community service event per year.- The SAAC will be responsible for one SAAC event per year.

EXECUTIVE OFFICERSAll offices will serve a one-year term and will be elected by the SAAC. The following are the offices and their main responsibilities:

President - Will preside over all SAAC and Executive Board meetings, which includes preparing the agenda 24 hours before meeting. Also will maintain contact with the Athletics Director and community organizations.

Vice President - Will actively run all SAAC meetings and act in the absence of the President for any given function.

Secretary - Will be responsible for taking roll at the beginning of each meeting and actively take minutes at each meeting.

Treasurer - Responsible for all coordination and planning of fund raising events and finances and for tracking finan-cial matters related to SAAC.

UMKC IN THE COMMUNITYThe UMKC Athletics Department assisted students by helping them move their personal belongings into their new homes as a part of Student Move-In Day in August 2008. Student-athletes, coaches and administrators from all 16 athletics teams battled rainy conditions to help their fellow students move into the Oak Street Residence Hall.

The project continued the Athletics Department’s initiative to have a strong presence on campus and in the community.

The UMKC Athletics and Activities and Programming Council (APC) Halloween Party was an overwhelming success on Oct. 27 at Pierson Auditorium on the UMKC campus. Kangaroo student-athletes joined in the spirit to attend the event to help Kansas City youth experience a fun, safe Halloween experience.

The student-athletes hosted games such as a skee ball, basketball, a dart and balloon station as well as a floating duck station. The chil-dren won a variety of prizes and were able to interact with all of the UMKC student-athletes.

The UMKC track and field squad conducted a field day at Ozanam in April 2009 with the entire men’s and women’s team and coaching staff participating in the event. The day included kick ball, basketball games and instruction on the javelin and discus throw.

Ozanam is located on a 96 acre campus in south Kansas City and responds to the behavioral, emotional, social and spiritual needs of children and their families. They have helped more than 6,000 children get their lives back on track. Ozanam is committed to help-ing kids and their families regain control of their lives, and rebuild healthy relationships with each other and their community.

The UMKC women’s soccer team started an after school program in the spring of 2009 at James Elementary in Kansas City, Mo., that gears towards teaching young girls the game of soccer.

The after school program consists of 9-12 year old girls and takes place every Friday after school at James Elementary. The program was run by head coach Anita Rodriguez and assistant coach Nikki Champe along with six members of the 2009 women’s soccer team on hand to coach.

James Elementary has a 92 percent Latino population and many of the fami-lies come from a low economic status. The after school program focuses on learning basic soccer techniques and playing games, in addition to having fun and filling a void in the community.

UMKC AWARDWINNERS

The UMKC Athletics Department handed out its annual awards on April 30 at the Champions Dinner at the Kansas City Marriott Country Club Plaza with student-athletes, coaches, presenters, athletics staff and other friends of the program in attendance. Seventeen Kangaroo student-athletes received 10 different awards during the evening’s festivities and 43 student-athletes were rec-ognized as 2008 UMKC Scholar Athletes.

Men’s soccer junior Bryan Perez and women’s basketball junior Chazny Morris took home the fifth annual Circle of Champions Award. This honor is presented to the best overall male and female student-athletes, and it is based solely on the individual’s athletic performance.

Volleyball sophomore Holly Schmidt was selected as the recipient of the Lester Milgram Award. This honor is presented annually to the student-athlete who demonstrates excellent sportsmanship both on and off the playing field.

Women’s basketball freshman Mariah Davis and track and field junior Marcus Lee are the co-recipients of the David B. Milner Award. This honor is given annually to a student-athlete, who through persistence and determination has been an inspiration to others. Often times, this recipient has overcome a severe injury or has suffered from a severe personal hardship.

Men’s basketball senior Dane Brumagin was selected as the hon-oree for the Lee Hunt Award. The accolade is presented annually to a basketball student-athlete who demonstrates academic abil-ity, moral character and leadership.

Men’s basketball freshman Latreze Mushatt and women’s basket-ball freshman LeAndrea Thomas were named the recipients of the Jim and Sally Job Award. This honor is presented annually to a promising student-athlete.

Men’s golf junior Alex Hogben and women’s tennis freshman Jillian Yakominich received the Sam Davidson Award. This award is presented annually to a men’s and women’s student-athlete who best exemplifies the ideals of scholarship, sportsmanship and goodwill.

Women’s basketball’s Heather Davis is the recipient of the Dr. Henry A. Mitchell/People-to-People Award. This honor is pre-sented annually to the UMKC basketball player that most exem-plifies Dr. Mitchell’s qualities of friendship, enthusiasm, sports-manship and humanitarianism.

Men’s soccer sophomore Ken Cooper and softball freshman Betsy Hanley received the Dutton Brookfield Award. The honor is pre-sented annually to a talented student-athlete who demonstrates great potential for the future.

Men’s soccer senior Brian Harris and women’s golf freshman Kelsey Kipp are the recipients of the Jack Gant Award. The accolade is presented to the best overall student-athlete, which includes both athletic and academic performances.

Men’s soccer senior Garret Guthrie and track and field/cross country senior Sara Hiller received the Stan Durwood Award. The honor is given each year to the male and female student-athlete with the highest grade point average at a minimum of 100 hours passed.

Additionally, a total of 43 student-athletes were recognized as UMKC Scholar Athletes for having a cumulative grade point aver-age of at least 3.5 during the 2008 calendar year.

NCAA CERTIFICATIONThe University of Missouri-Kansas City received a full NCAA Divi-sion I athletics certification for the next decade, the NCAA an-nounced in April 2009.

The certification showed that UMKC is operating its athletics pro-gram in substantial conformity with operating principles adopted by the NCAA Division I membership.

The NCAA certified UMKC without any special conditions. This second round of athletics certification by the NCAA Division I Committee on Athletics Certification will last 10 years.

All 326 active Division I members participate in the certification process, which includes review of a university’s aca-demic and fiscal integrity, governance, rules compliance, commitment to equity, student-athlete welfare and sportsmanship.

“The announcement of full NCAA Certification, awarded without any conditions or qualifications, is truly a momentous day for our University and our Athletics Department,” said UMKC Chancellor Leo Morton. “This success confirms the exemplary work done to ensure that out-standing programs and policies are in place to provide our student-ath-letes the best opportunity to compete at high levels both on the playing fields and in the classrooms.”

Starting in August 2007, the University conducted an 18-month campus wide review of the athletics program as a part of the certification pro-cess, culminating in a self-study document that was submitted to the NCAA reviewers.

The self-study set three objectives: 1) to engage the entire campus com-munity and educate the larger community about the athletics programs and its values; 2) to reveal the areas in which the Athletics Department has made a positive contribution to the institution and surrounding community; and 3) to identify areas of improvement in the Athletics Department as the program continues to develop a long-range plan.

Before certification is achieved, the NCAA Division I Committee on Athletics Certification reviews the self-study and provides a list of issues identified during the evaluation. After this review, a peer-review committee visits the

The NCAA does not divulge specific information related to an institution’s self-study, peer-review visit or the condi-tions set forth for certification.

“UMKC took the NCAA certification process very seriously,” said Tyler . “I want to thank the steering committee for their hard work and all our supporters who helped UMKC receive this certification. Their efforts have helped the university receive this certification without condition.”

Since its previous review in 2000, UMKC Athletics has improved several facets of its operation. Among the primary focuses, improvements occurred in the areas of gender equity, compliance, academic support, facilities, staffing and overall student-athlete well-being.

Currently under construction, UMKC’s Stanley H. Durwood Soccer Stadium and Recreational Field is scheduled for completion in August 2009. Recently completed projects include the renovation of locker rooms for men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball, as well as the Student-Athlete Support Services Office.

“Our being certified without condition is a tribute to the quality of the University of Missouri-Kansas City and to the student-athletes, coaches, and staff members within the Department of Athletics,” said Hall. “The peer review report and the NCAA certification have affirmed the integrity of intercollegiate athletics at UMKC.”

The UMKC Athletics Department inducted its inaugural Hall of Fame class on Friday, Dec. 8 at the Intercontinental Hotel in Kansas City. The 10-person class consisted of eight student-ath-letes, one former coach/administrator and one friend of the program.

Neil Harwell, the television voice of UMKC basketball, served as the emcee for the event. A presenter introduced each inductee before the Hall of Famers were given the opportunity to ad-dress the capacity crowd of 200 family, friends and supporters of the program.

The Hall of Fame class consisted of Stan Dur-wood (supporter/friend of program), Bill Frerk-ing (men’s basketball), Katie Houlehan (wom-

en’s basketball), Lee Hunt (former AD/head basketball coach), Robert Russell (men’s golf), Larry Scheller (men’s soccer), Ronnie Schmitz (men’s basketball), Catalina Suarez-Moss (vol-leyball), Matthew Voelker (men’s track & field) and Stephanie Worthy (women’s basketball).

Student-athletes can be considered for induction into the Hall of Fame a minimum of two years after their last date of enrollment. Only student-athletes who have earned an undergraduate de-gree and all-America, all-conference, all-district or all-region status will be considered. Coaches, administrators, and friends of the program will be judged based on their overall impact on their programs and the entire athletics department.

EXTERNAL SUPPORT

KANGAROO ATHLETICS SCHOLARSHIP FUND (KASF)

FORMER STUDENT-ATHLETE ASSOCIATION

The Kangaroo Athletics Scholarship Fund (KASF) launched in September 2007 in order to provide private resources to support the student-athletes of UMKC. These gifts go to support tuition, room, board, books, medical costs, travel expenses, and more for the over 180 student-athletes who compete as Kangaroos.

Donors receive numerous benefits for their generosity, dependent on their total donation. The popular “Kangaroo Club” pre-game hospitality party was upgraded and was made available to all donors at $250 and above, along additional ben-efits for donors ranging from $100 to $10,000.

Over $185,000 was raised during the 2008-09 fiscal year from over 200 Kangaroo supporters. Despite a difficult econ-omy, donations increased by more than 50 percent from the year before.

June 2008 saw the launch of the UMKC Kangaroos Former Student-Athlete Association. Designed to reunite and recon-nect UMKC letterwinners, the group now boasts more tha 200 former Kangaroos, including members from Argentina and Taiwan.

Over 100 former student-athletes participated in reunion events throughout the year, including the popular “Golf Roast” and the first ever presentation of former basketball student-athletes on Senior Day.

Team reunions are planned for all sports in the upcoming year, emphasizing a re-connection to UMKC, to the team with which they participated, and to their former teammates. Members will also receive complimentary admissions to all UMKC Athletics contests, a special gift featuring the new Kangaroo logo, and special communications from the Former Student-Athlete Association.

ATHLETICS FOUNDATION BOARDThe Athletics Department’s fund raising efforts are aided greatly by the Athletics Foundation Board. The board serves the department in an advisory capacity and assists the program by aiding in the development of external support.

EXTERNAL SUPPORT

Our first alumni reunion event was held in August 2008 with former volleyball student-athletes scrimmaging our 2008 volleyball team, followed by a social reception at Californios restuarant. Our basketball program held a reception for their alumni prior to the UMKC vs. Oral Roberts men’s basketball game at Municipal Auditorium in February 2009. Several former basketball players were introduced during the pre-game senior day festivities. We also had our second annual men’s and women’s golf Roast & Toast at the Marriott on the Plaza with former student-athletes in attendance, and we welcomed former softball players back to the team’s pre-season “Captain’s Banquet”.

As we look forward to the 2009-10 athletic seasons, reunion games have already been scheduled for former soccer and volleyball student-athletes. Both basketball squads are also looking forward to reunion games, while track & field and tennis will add new events. The golf Roast & Toast and Captain’s Banquet are also expected to grow bigger and better in the upcoming year. We hope all former student-athletes will be able to join us!

FORMER STUDENT-ATHLETE ASSOCIATIONUMKC launched the Former Student-Athlete Association in June 2008 and it since has grown to over 150 former student-athletes with membership continuing to increase. This association is in-tended for UMKC letterwinners to reunite with each other and reconnect with UMKC.

Members are invited to their team’s reunion events, where they are able come together with former teammates and have the opportunity to meet the current Kangaroos. FORMER STUDENT-ATHLETE ASSOCIATIONThe UMKC Kangaroos Former Student-Athlete Association strives to keep former student-athletes connected to the athletics program and to the University at large through regular communications and special events aimed as reuniting former teammates. During the 2008-2009 athletic seasons, more than 100 student-athletes across all sports participated in various events and opportunities, from pre-game receptions and special events to complimentary tickets and correspondence.

DURWOOD SOCCER STADIUM & RECREATIONAL FIELD CONSTRUCTION UPDATEConstruction on UMKC’s new facility, the Dur-wood Soccer Stadium & Recreational Field, began in December 2008 with the demolition of the existing Swinney Recreation Track & Field Complex.

The Weitz Company began the demolition of the facility on Dec. 29, where it removed the old bleachers and scoreboard. It also began remov-ing parts of the old track surface.

Fans have been able to follow the construction progress with updated photo galleries on UM-KCKangaroos.com and in March, fans could get up-to-the-date web-cam images that update every 15 minutes.

The facilty is scheduled to be completed in Au-gust in time for the 2009 men’s and women’s soccer seasons. The first regular season contest at the venue will be held on Sunday, Aug. 30 when the Kangaroo women square off against Creighton.

Not only do fans have the opportunity to read the most up-to-date content and watch the live events via Roo Vision, but now fans can purchase tickets for UMKC events via the World Wide Web. UMKC Athletics tickets for men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s soccer and volleyball can all be purchased online on the school’s website.

- The UMKC Ticket Office is now com-pletely housed through UMKCK-angaroos.com.

- Fans can buy season and single game tickets online and see facility im-ages on where their seats are located.

PRE-SEASON BASKETBALLUMKC Men’s & Women’s Basketball at the College Basketball Experience

The UMKC men’s and women’s basketball teams opened its 2008-09 seasons on Oct. 17 at the College Basketball Experience, which is located adjacent to the Sprint Center in downtown Kansas City, Mo. Nearly 500 Kangaroo faithful joined the two basketball squads to help them offi-cially kick-off their seasons.

After an opening welcome from UMKC Director of Athletics Tim Hall, Kangaroo women’s basketball coach Candace Whitaker introduced her 2008-09 women’s basketball team and coaching staff. The squad then went through team d r i l l s b e f o r e

handing the center stage to men’s head coach Matt Brown and the UMKC men’s basketball team. The second year coach introduced his 12-player squad along with his coaching staff before the players put on a dunk show for the fans in attendance.

The UMKC student-athletes were then dispersed throughout the facility to interact with the fans and to participate in the various interactive games that the facility offers.

Metro Sports in Kansas City covered the event live with Brad Porter providing the station live feeds at the venue. The Kangaroos were one of two local schools along with defending National Champion Kansas to have live coverage at their Midnight Madness events.

UMKC BASKETBALL BROADCAST TEAMSON THE RADIO

ON THE TUBE

UMKC added a new on-air duo for UMKC basketball games in 2008-09. Ste-ven Davis (play-by-play) and Steven St. John (color) teamed up to call the ac-tion for all Kangaroo home games.

Davis joined the UMKC team after serving as the play-by-play voice for the Royals Double-A affiliate, the Northwest Arkansas Naturals, while St. John is an on-air personality on “The Border Patrol”, which airs on 810 AM WHB.

UMKC also added Nick Mc-Cabe to the broadcast team as the color commentator for ‘Roo road dates. McCabe formerly served as the Direc-tor of Operations at Union Broadcasting in Kansas City.

The Kangaroos also boast T.J. Jackson, who serves as the play-by-play voice for the UMKC women’s basket-ball and volleyball programs. Jackson, who works as a morning co-host, sportscast-er and promotions director at KLJC Radio, is entering his fourth season with the Kangaroos.

UMKC welcomed back its television duo of Neil Harwell and Doug Elstun for the second straight year in 2008-09, as the pair provided play-by-play and color commentatory for the Kangaroo games that were televised on Metro Sports.

Overall, Harwell has been associated with UMKC Athletics as the play-by-play voice of the ‘Roos for the last 14 years, while Elstun has been the color voice for the past nine seasons, seven of which he assisted with radio broadcats.

New to the UMKC team in 2008-09 was Patti Phillips. Phillips, the Executive Director of WIN for KC, was the color commentator for a pair of Kangaroo women’s contests.

In addition to the Think Pink and Trunk-or-Treat events, UMKC Ath-letics was actively involved throughout the Kansas City community. The various athletics teams participated in over 35 events around the community to truly incorporate Kangaroo Athletics into the over arching foundation of the city.
