NATIONAL RANKINGS

 BY THE NUMBERS

» The Lady Vols have played nine five-set matches this sea-son and won seven. Only UT’s 1991 team - which played 10 had more five-setters.

4.44» Ellen Mullins is averaging 4.44 digs per set this season - a mark that would rank 3rd in the UT single-season rally scoring record books.

2

UT IN THE RANKINGS¢ For the third consecutive season, Tennessee

opened its campaign in the national rankings, coming in at No. 15 in the AVCA Preseason Poll. The preseason ranking was the ninth in program history for UT, who concluded 2011 rated as No. 19.¢ On Aug. 27, the Lady Vols moved up one position

to No. 14 in the nation following wins over Cincinnati and then-No. 10 Iowa State. UT fell down two notches to No. 16 after posting a 2-1 mark at the Shocker Volleyball Classic.¢ The Big Orange went 3-0 at Maryland’s Spring-

Hill Suites Invitational with three sweeps, but dropped one spot to No. 17 in the AVCA Poll on Sept. 10.¢ After opening their SEC slate 2-3, the Lady Vols

dropped out of the top 25 on Oct. 1 for the first time in 17 polling periods and since September 2011.¢ The 16-week stretch was the fourth longest in

school history. UT had two stretches of 19-straight weeks (2009-11; 1982-84) and one stretch of 17 con-secutive weeks (2004-05) in the poll.¢ After entering the rankings at No. 24 on Nov. 30,

2009, the Lady Vols spent 19 consecutive polling pe-riods in the Top 25, until falling out for a four-week span last season. ¢ Eight wins in their last nine matches would not

boost the Lady Vols back into the polls, but they are receiving votes for the sixth straight week (Nov. 5).

» Head Coach Rob Patrick is two matches away from coaching his 500th career match at Tennessee. It will be at home vs. Auburn on Nov. 16.

LADY VOL NOTESONE FOR THE AGES¢ Tennessee’s upset at then-No. 13 Florida last Sunday

certainly made its mark in the Lady Vol record books.¢ In the 54-match rivalry, it was the closest match

ever played between the two sides. The margin of victory in each set was an average of 3.6 points, the smallest in series history.¢ The Lady Vols have now played nine five-set

matches vs. Florida all-time and have only lost two of them – the last coming in 1987.¢ Along with the two wins last season, Tennessee

has now won three consecutive matches against the Gators, marking the team’s first three-match winning streak since the Lady Vols beat Florida four times in a row from 1988-90.¢ UT snapped a 21-match home regular season winning

streak for the Gators. Tennessee was also the last team to beat UF at home, with a five-set win on Oct. 20, 2011.¢ Tennessee posted a season-high 19 blocks – the

most for the Lady Vols since last season’s NCAA Tour-nament matchup against Ohio State (20) – it also is the highest block total for a Florida opponent since UT notched 21 in a five-set win on Oct. 30, 2005.¢ At 2 hours and 37 minutes, the match was one of

the longest Tennessee has played since 2001.¢ Since Mary Wise took over at Florida in 1991, only

six teams have beaten the Gators three times in a row. Tennessee is the first team to do so in the last nine years. Between those six teams, 11 have National Championships, seven of them earned since 1991.

SUNDAY FUNDAY¢ With the Lady Vols’ thrilling five-set win in Gaines-

ville, UT remained undefeated with a perfect 7-0 mark on Sundays in 2012. Three of the seven matches have been five-set victories.¢ Junior outside hitter Kelsey Robinson is averag-

ing 4.40 kills per set on Sundays, while junior libero Ellen Mullins is averaging 4.38 digs per game. Se-nior DeeDee Harrison is averaging an impressive 1.57 blocks per set on the final day of the weekend.¢ Tennessee is out-performing its opponent in ev-

ery major statistical category on Sundays.

TENNESSEE vs. THE TOP 25¢ Through 23 matches, the Lady Vols have faced

four opponents ranked in the top 25 and four that were receiving votes in the poll.¢ UT is 3-1 against teams in the top 25 this season

with wins over then-No. 10 Iowa State, then-No. 24 Colorado State and then-No. 13 Florida last week. The Big Orange’s loss was against then-No. 12 Florida State in the season opener. The Lady Vols also lost to a BYU squad that is now ranked 14th in the weekly poll.¢ The Lady Vols’ two wins over ranked teams are

the only wins over non-conference opponents ranked in the top 25 for SEC teams.¢ Tennessee went 4-2 in matches against ranked

opponents in 2011, with a pair of wins over Florida (No. 6 & No. 13), a victory over No. 16 Kentucky and a

win against No. 21 Dayton.¢ En route to its NCAA Regional Final appearance,

the Big Orange defeated a rally-scoring record six ranked teams in 2004. UT shared the SEC title and captured the SEC Tournament title that season.

MULLINS JOINS THE CLUB¢ With her first dig at Florida (11/4), junior libero Ellen

Mullins became the 13th Lady Vol in program history to surpass the 1,000-career dig mark. With her classmate Kelsey Robinson eclipsing the mark earlier this campaign, Mullins is the second UT player this season to join the club.¢ Mullins is averaging a career-best 4.42 digs per

set this season – a mark that would stand third in the UT single-season record books – and now has 1,027 career digs. She ranks 12th in the category.¢ Below is a chart of UT’s 1,000-dig club:

TENNESSEE IN THE RPI¢ The initial NCAA Division I Volleyball RPI of the 2012

campaign was released recently with the Lady Vols coming in at No. 27 in the nation. After defeating Mizzou and Georgia, UT jumped six spots to No. 21 in the sec-ond week of the RPI rankings and went up three more spots after posting wins at LSU and Arkansas to No. 18.¢ Following their win at Texas A&M, the Lady Vols

jumped two more spots to No. 16 in this week’s RPI. After a 1-1 weekend against Kentucky and Alabama, UT dropped three spots to No. 19 in the latest rankings (10/29). Even with a win at then-No. 13 Florida, UT fell to 20th in the RPI.¢ Nine of UT’s 17 wins have come against top 70 RPI

teams: Florida (13), Texas A&M (24), Arkansas (26), Iowa State (28), Colorado State (38), Wichita State (42), Mizzou (52), UGA (53) and LSU (70).¢ In addition, five of the Big Orange’s six losses have

come against top 26 RPI squads: Florida State (8), BYU (15), twice vs. Kentucky (17) and Arkansas (26). ¢ The SEC has four teams in the top 26 and eight

squads in the top 55 of the RPI rankings: Florida (13), Kentucky (17), Tennessee (20), Texas A&M (24), Arkan-sas (26), Auburn (51), Missouri (52) and Georgia (53).

CAN YOU-T DIG IT?¢ After posting a season-high 98 digs at home

against Mizzou (Oct. 5), the Lady Vols bested that mark just five days later when they tied a Tennessee rally scoring record with 106 scoops at LSU (Oct. 10).¢ UT has recorded 50 or more digs in 19 of 23

matches this season. ¢ With its recent performances, Tennessee has

climbed to fifth in the SEC in the category with an average of 16.10 digs per set. In SEC matches only, UT ranks second in the category (17.28/Set).

SHE CAN DIG IT¢ Mullins, a two-time winner of the SEC’s Defensive

Player of the Week award, posted a career-best 34 digs against Mizzou (Oct. 5) and 32 scoops at LSU (Oct. 10). She became just the third Lady Vol to record at least two matches with 30 or more digs in a single season. Two weeks ago, she almost notched her third 30-dig match, with 29 against Kentucky (Oct. 26) and then added 28 at Florida (11/4).¢ Her 34 digs at Mizzou stands as the seventh-

highest single-match total in school history and the second most in the 25-point rally scoring era. It was also the fifth highest total in the SEC this season.¢ The Nashville native has started every match at li-

bero for UT this season and upped her average to 4.42 digs per set. Mullins has posted 12 or more digs in all 14 conference matches this season and currently ranks fifth in the SEC in digs pet set. In league matches only, she ranks third with 4.81 scoops per game.

1,000-1,000 CLUB¢ With her first dig of the second set at Texas A&M

(10/19), Robinson became the fifth Lady Vol in program history to eclipse the 1,000-mark in career kills and digs.¢ Robinson, who notched her 1,000th career kill in

a five-set win at LSU (10/10) earlier this season, joins Tennessee greats Nikki Fowler, Kristy Dobson, Stepha-nie Ehlers and Sonja Thomas in the exclusive club.¢ Just a junior, Robinson reached the 1,000/1,000

mark in both categories in just 79 matches. Below is a chart of the five club members:

HARRISON DOMINATING ON D¢ The leader in the middle of the Lady Vol defense,

redshirt senior DeeDee Harrison was named the SEC’s Defensive Player of the Week last Monday for her re-cent performances.¢ An All-American last season and Preseason All-

SEC honoree this year, Harrison leads the Big Orange with 82 blocks on the season.¢ The Nashville native has upped her blocks per set

average to 1.19 this season and currently ranks second in the league in the category. The 6-foot-4 middle blocker has UT ranked second in the conference in blocks. Over the last nine matches, she is averaging 1.43 blocks per game.

TENNESSEE ON THE ROAD¢ Tennessee is 8-2 in true road matches this season,

with wins over Wichita State, Maryland, Alabama, LSU, Arkansas, Texas A&M, MSU and Florida. UT also has three wins at a neutral location on the campaign.¢ In 2011, the Big Orange finished with a 14-3 re-

cord in matches away from Thompson-Boling Arena, including a 3-1 mark in a neutral location.¢ Dating back through the 2008 campaign, the

Lady Vols are 46-17 (.746) in true road matches. UT is 73-40 (.646) in away matches dating back through the 2004 season.

SCARY GOOD IN OCTOBER¢ The Lady Vols finished October with a near-per-

fect 6-1 record in the month.¢ Dating back five seasons through the 2008 cam-

paign, the Lady Vols are an impressive 37-9 in the month of October and have used the 31 days to help propel themselves into four consecutive NCAA Tournaments.¢ Over the month, Tennessee has out-performed its

opponents in every statistical category. The Lady Vols out-killed (13.7 K/s-11.8 K/s), out-hit (.243-.183), out-passed (13.0 A/s-11.8 A/s), out-aced (.9 A/s-.6 A/s),

FABULOUS IN FIVE¢ UT has played a league-high nine five-setters

through 23 matches this season and holds a 7-2 record in those matchups.¢ The nine five-set matches this year are the sec-

ond-most in program history, behind only the 1991 campaign when UT played 10.¢ The five-set win at LSU (Oct. 10) was the Lady

Vols’ third straight win in five, marking just the sec-ond time in program history the team has won back to back to back five-setters. ¢ UT defeated South Carolina, Auburn and Ken-

tucky in consecutive five-setters in 2008.¢ This year is just the second time the Big Orange

has ever won two pairs of back to back five-setters in the same season. The Lady Vols also beat Iowa State (Aug. 25) and Colorado State (Aug. 31) in consecutive five-setters earlier this campaign.¢ Tennessee fought back from a two-set deficit against

Georgia (Oct. 7). It was the 16th win after being down 0-2 in school history. From 1997 to 2008, the team was only able to accomplish the feat once. Since 2009, the Lady Vols have won one match in that fashion each season.

THROWING IT AROUND ¢ Over the past nine matches, Tennessee has dished

out a combined 477 assists for an average of 12.89 per set, including 389 from sophomore setter Mary Pollmiller. Pollmiller, who shattered UT’s single season assists records last season, is averaging 10.51 dimes per game over the last nine and handed out 46 in just three sets at Texas A&M (10/19) for a 15.33 per game average.¢ With Pollmiller’s ability to spread it around, Tennes-

see has climbed to second place in the SEC with a sea-son average of 13.10 assists per game. In SEC matches only, the Lady Vols rank fourth at 12.91 helpers per frame.¢ Tennessee has posted 50 or more assists in 14 of

23 matches this season.

TENNESSEE ON THE TUBE¢ The Lady Vols will make a league high five TV ap-

pearances in the regular season in 2012. UT, which ap-peared on the network at Mizzou and Kentucky, made its third and final appearance on ESPNU at LSU (10/10). The Big Orange hosted Alabama (10/28) on Fox SportSouth this and played at Florida on CSS last weekend.¢ Since 2001, Tennessee has played 11 matches on

ESPN’s networks and is 6-5 in those matches. Since 2009, UT is 15-5 in TV matches. The Big Orange is 3-2 on TV this season.¢ The Orange & White owns an overall record of 22-

21 in televised matches dating back to 2001.

DOUBLE-DOUBLE MACHINE¢ Robinson, the defending SEC Player of the Year,

is currently tied for the lead in the SEC with 16 dou-ble-doubles on the season. Robinson did not achieve the feat in the season opener against Florida State, but then reached double digits in two categories in 11-straight matches.¢ This past weekend, Robinson - who led the league in

double-doubles last season (23) - had 20 kills and 11 digs at Florida to move back into the SEC lead in the category.¢ She now has 43 career double-doubles.

POLLMILLER TRIPLE-DOUBLE¢ With her 49-assist, 14-dig and 11-kill performance at

Wichita State (9/2), Pollmiller became just the second player in program history to record the rare triple-double.¢ Pollmiller and Ole Miss’ Amanda Philpot have the

SEC’s only triple-doubles this season. Philpot tallied 11 kills, 14 digs and 36 assists vs. Rice and added a 10-kill, 12-dig and 40-assist performance vs. rival Mississippi State.¢ Pollmiller is currently tied for second in the con-

ference with 13 double-doubles on the season.¢ Tennessee legend Nikki Fowler was the only other

UT player to achieve the triple-double for the Lady Vols. As a freshman, Fowler went for 19 kills, 19 assists and 18 digs at Ole Miss on Nov. 2, 2007. She finished her career (2007-10) with 1,649 kills and 1,281 digs, ranking fourth in kills and sixth in digs in the UT record books.

ROBINSON EARNS MEMBERSHIP¢ Heading into the break at LSU (10/10), Robinson

pounded her 998th and 999th career kills to comeback and win the second set, 26-24. Right after the break, the Bartlett, Ill., native slammed down another - her 1,000th career kill in the Big Orange uniform.¢ With that kill, she became one of just 18 Lady Vols

to eclipse the 1,000-kill plateau. She enters this match in 14th place all-time with 1,102 kills.¢ Below is a chart of UT’s 1,000-kill club:

20/20 VISION¢ Against South Carolina (9/23), Robinson recorded

21 kills and 22 digs, marking her third 20/20 match of the season and the fifth of her career. While it’s not an of-ficial stat, it’s certainly a rare feat in the UT record books.¢ Since 2001, only six different players have reached

the 20 mark in two statistical categories in a single match on just 14 occasions.¢ Below is a chart of UT’s 14 20/20 matches since 2001:

POLLMILLER PASSES 2K¢ With her 36th assist at home vs. Arkansas (9/21),

Pollmiller became the seventh player in Tennessee history to cross the 2,000-assist mark for her career.¢ As a freshman, she set UT single season rally

scoring records in assists (1,480) and assists per set (11.94). She led all NCAA freshmen in assists per set, while ranking fourth in the nation and first in the SEC.¢ She was tabbed SEC Freshman of the Year and an

AVCA Honorable Mention All-American. In addition, the rookie garnered AVCA All-South Region Fresh-man of the Year, SEC All-Freshman Team and AVCA All-South Region Team honors. ¢ Below is a chart of UT’s 2,000-assist club:

BACK IN TOP FORM¢ A little over a year removed from a knee injury that

cost her what was supposed to be her senior season at UT, Kayla Jeter had the breakout performance she had been waiting for against Georgia (10/7). The All-Amer-ican posted a career-best 27 kills, breaking her previ-ous mark of 23 set as a sophomore at Kentucky, and hit .444 against the Bulldogs with 12 digs to notch her first double-double of the season. The 27 kills from the Solon, Ohio native ranks as the second-highest single-match total in the SEC this year. The outside hitter has 150 kills on the season entering the weekend.¢ At Florida, Jeter notched six blocks, including a

career-best three solo rejections.

SCOUTING THE REBELS¢ Ole Miss enters Friday night’s match in fifth place

in the SEC Western Division with a 10-13 overall record and a 4-10 mark in league play. The Rebels lost a pair of four set matches at Kentucky and LSU last week.¢ The Rebels, who have SEC wins against Mississippi State,

Missouri and two versus South Carolina, have been solid at home all season. Ole Miss is 6-3 at the Gillom Center this year.¢ The Rebels are a good serving team, currently

ranking seventh in the conference with a 1.11 aces per set average. Leading the way in the category is junior Kara Morgan, who has 21 aces on the season.¢ Led by senior Ashley Veach, Ole Miss ranks eighth in

the SEC in digs per set with an average of 14.98. Veach leads the team with 377 digs on the year and her 4.44 scoops per game average are currently fourth-best in the league.¢ Morgan also leads the Rebels offensively. She has

a team-high 256 kills on the season and ranks 12th in the SEC in kills per set.¢ Senior setter Amanda Philpot is the league’s only

player to have recorded two triple-doubles this season. Philpot tallied 11 kills, 14 digs and 36 assists against Rice (9/7) and then posted 10 kills, 12 digs and 40 helpers against Mississippi State (9/21) just two weeks later. UT’s Mary Pollmiller is the only other player in the SEC with a triple-double this season.¢ Ole Miss Head Coach Joe Getzin is in his 11th sea-

son at the helm of the Rebels. During his tenure, Getzin has guided the Rebels to three NCAA Tournaments and owns a record of 143-178 at Ole Miss.

SCOUTING THE GAMECOCKS¢ After winning its Friday night match against Mis-

sissippi State in straight-sets, South Carolina enters the matchup in last place in the SEC Eastern Division with an overall mark of 16-12 and a league record of 4-12. The Gamecocks lost in straight sets on the road against Missouri and Kentucky last week.¢ The Gamecocks, who have SEC wins over Georgia,

LSU and Mississippi State, began the 2012 campaign with 13 wins – the second-longest winning streak in program history. Since, South Carolina is 3-12.¢ The Gamecocks are 10-5 at home this season and

undefeated (9-0) when they win the blocking battle. SC is 147-74 all-time at the Volleyball Competition Facility.¢ As a team, South Carolina is a very efficient hitting

team. SC ranks third in the SEC with a .260 attacking percentage. The Gamecocks also rank sixth in assists per set (12.81), seventh in kills per set (13.71) and eighth in aces per frame (0.99).¢ Junior outside hitter Juliette Thevenin leads the

squad with 376 kills, ranking third in the SEC with 4.22 kills per set. Thevenin also ranks third in the conference in points per set (4.59) and 14th in hitting percentage on the season (.295).¢ Sophomore Cara Howley currently leads the team

with 25 aces and ranks fourth in the conference with a 0.27 aces per set average. She also ranks 17th in the league with a .283 attacking clip and has 199 kills on the year.¢ Junior defensive specialist Paige Wheeler leads

the team with 357 digs and ranks ninth in the SEC with 3.97 scoops per game.¢ South Carolina Head Coach Scott Swanson is in his

second year at the helm of the Gamecocks after coach-ing four seasons at UTEP. He has an overall record of 30-28 at SC and a career record of 80-89.
