WithintheUMassLowellwom-en’ssoccerprogram,thereisasenseoffocus,purposeandresolve–typicalforthistimeofyear.Ontheoutside,thereissomecuriosityandmaybeevenaslightdropofexpectation. It’sunderstand-able.Theteamgraduatedperhapsthebestgoalkeeperinthecountry,themajorityofitsbestdefenseandoneofitstopscorers. Inthepro-gram’s15seasons,UMassLowellneverrelinquishedfewergoalsorscoredmoreoverthelastfouryears,overwhichitposteda41-24-14recordandadvancedtotheNCAATournamentthreetimes. UMassLowellopenstheseasonattheAmericanInternationalCollegeTournamentThursday,Sept.4againstC.W.Post(7:30)andSaturdayagainstBridgeport(7:30).TheRiverHawksplayonehomematch(againsttwo-timeNCAAsemifinalistSaintRose)intheirfirstsixdates. Translated,theywillbetestedimmedi-ately. DespiteUMassLowell’ssubstantialgraduationlosses,theRiverHawksweretabbedtofinishthirdintheNortheast-10ConferencePreseasonCoachesPoll,indicativeoftheamountofrespectthepro-gramhasearnedoverrecentyears. TheywillmissthegoalkeepingofJamieGillis,afirstteamAll-Americanlastseasonwhoplayedeveryminuteofeverymatchinfouryears.GillishadastellarwallinfrontofherinAll-AmericanKathleenStrazzereaswellasColleenFitzpatrickandJennaMcIntosh. Upfront,KellySopercompiled11goalsandnineassistsoverthelastthreeseasons,includingfourandfourlastsea-son. Butmakenomistake:TheRiverHawksexpecttobeverygoodthisyear.

2010 Outlook: River Hawks Reloading “Wegradu-atedaveryinfluentialclass,”saidHeadCoachElieMonteiro,whoisenteringhisninthseason.“Everyoneofthoseplayersinthatclassplayedamajorpartinmovingtheprogramforward.Theyleftalegacythatwillbehardtofollow.Theyalsoleftablueprintthatcanbecopiedwithhardworkandeffortwhichiswhatourcurrentgroupofplayerswilltrytoemulate.” UMassLowellhasstrengthandex-perienceonallthreelines,particularlyupfrontwheresopho-moreTaylorHart-

mannandseniorBrianneBozzellashouldresume

wheretheyleftoff. Hartmann,namedtothe2009NE-10All-RookieTeam,compiledsevengoalsandtwoassistswhileBozzellaaddedsixgoalsandfourassists. Thereisplentyinreserveinsopho-moresJennaCosta,whoregisteredonegoalandtwoassistsin21appearanceslastyear;andKeannaSantos,whosawactioninonly11gamesduetoaninjury. MonteirocanalsotabsophomoresJuliaDonigian,whoplayedin11matches,andColleenSoper,whomadethreeap-pearances. Newtotheteam–butnottheUniver-sity–isjuniorStephanieRollo,whoplayedshortstopforthesoftballteamherfirsttwoyears,butalsohadastellarsoccercareeratDracutH.S.whereshewasatwo-timeMerrimackValleyConferenceall-starandfour-yearstarter. “Someofouryoungerplayersareex-citedtobeshowingwhattheylearnedfromlastseason,especiallyupfrontwherewe'remoreathletic,”saidMonteiro. Withthreegoalsandfourassists,Merul-loexpertlycontrolledtheleftsideoffensivelyanddefensively.Per-hapsthemostunsungplayerontheteam,juniorErinFleury,isexpectedtoreturntoadefensivemidfieldrole,inwhichsheflourishedin2009. Fillingtheva-catedspotcouldbeanumberofplayers,notablysophomoreGiaO’Connor,whocomesintotheseasonwithplentyofdriveafterplayinginonly11matchesduetoin-jury.Additionally,juniorJackieZani,whomade11appearanceslastyear,couldalsowinaplaceinthemidfield. JuniorKaitlynHurd(fivematchesin2009)andsophomoreCharlotteJensen(sixmatches)willbattleforminutes. SophomorenewcomerAmyCramerwilllooktohaveanimmediateimpactinthemiddleafterplayinglastseasonatDeanCollegewhereshewasajuniorcollegeAll-American.Previously,shewasafive-timeall-conferencestandout(shewasastarterintheeighthgrade),three-timeall-stateandtwo-timeconferencemostvaluableplayeratMarlboroH.S. FreshmanSaraSequeiracouldalsofigureinafteranall-conferencecareeratGreaterLowellTech,whichsawherearnCommonwealthConfrenceMVPhonorsasasenior;whilefreshmanSarahRayecomestoLowellafterathree-yearall-statecareeratSalemH.S. “We'vegainedmoreabilityinthemid-field,whichwillhelpuscontinuetoimproveourpossessiongame,”Monteironoted.”Thatiskeytohowwewanttoplay.” Unquestionably,defenseiswheretheRiverHawksfeelasenseofurgency,butwithseniorNE-10all-starMichelleLaMar,expectedtostartherfourthyear,UMassLowellcanstillrankamongthetopteamsintheNE-10.

LaMar,alongwithGillis,Strazzere,FitzpatrickandMcIn-tosh,helpedleadtheRiverHawkstoseveralschoolrecords,amongthemshutouts(14)andfewestgoalsconcededinaseason. Infact,theaforementionedwereinstrumentalinGillisestablishingtheNCAADivisionIIrecordofconsecutiveshutoutminutes(1,333),astretchwhichlastedmorethansixweeks. “OurmajorchallengewillbetoreplacethethreeoutofourbackfourinadditiontoJamie,”saidMonteiro.“Ireallybelievethatwehave

theplayerswiththetalentherewhocandoit.Thosewhoarecompetingforthosespotsarerelishingtheprospectofslidingintothoseroles.Thatcompetitioniscreatingabuzzinpracticeandwillmakeusstronger.” LaMarwillhaveseveralfamiliarfacesaroundher,includingjuniorHannahMerullo,whostartedagoodportionofher20appear-anceslastseason;andsophomoreCaseySchulze,whoplayedin12games. FreshmanMargaretMcSpirittcouldalsofigureinafterastellarcareeratLon-donderryH.S.whereshewasafour-yearplayerandall-statestandout.MonteirocanalsolooktoKateMasson,whowasanall-statestandoutwholedMerrimackH.S.tothestatechampionshiproundandaschool-record18wins. Betweenthewoodwork,therearebigbootstofill,butMonteirohasconfidenceinapairofnewcomers–freshmenJillCarlsonandMicaelaButlin,whohavethesize–5-foot-7and5-9,respectively–andtheathleticism. Afour-yearstarteratLexingtonH.S.,CarlsonwastheMiddlesexLeagueGoal-keeperoftheYearandanEasternMass.all-starwhileButlinwasafirstteamAll-BayStateLeaguestandoutatMiltonH.S.

ElieMonteiroentershisninthyearasheadcoachofthewomen'ssoccerteamandhassteadilymaintainedtheprogramwithintheupperechelonoftheNortheast-10ConferenceandEastRegion. TheRiverHawks(12-5-4overall,10-3-2intheNE-10in2009)enter2010freshoffastellaryearwhichsawthemrewritetherecordbookandearntheirfourthNCAATournamentinvitationinfiveyears.Theyearfolloweda2008campaigninwhichUMassLowellwent8-5-5(6-3-5NE-10)andadvancedtothesemifinaloftheNE-10Tournament.

In2007,UMassLowellwent11-9-1(6-7-1NE-10)withitsthirdstraightNCAATourna-mentappearance,inwhichtheRiverHawkssuffereda1-0setbacktoMerrimackinthefirstround.Theseasonfolloweda2006campaignwhichsawUMLgo10-5-4(10-3-1NE-10)andcomewithinapenaltyshootoutofdisplacingFranklinPierceintheNCAATournamentNewEnglandRegionfirstround. In2005,MonteiroguidedtheRiverHawkstoa12-7-1clip(9-4-1NE-10)andtheirfirst-everappearanceintheNCAAs.Theseasonsawthefallofmanyschoolrecords,includingvictories(12),fewestgoalsallowed(17)andshutouts(nine)inaseason.Overthelastfiveseasons,Monteirohascompileda54-36-11clip. PriortobecomingUMassLowell'sheadcoach,MonteiroservedasanassistantcoachwiththeUMassLowellmen'sandwomen'steamsfortwoyearsandspentthreeyearsasanassistantcoachatFranklinPierce.WhilewiththeUMassLowellmen'sprogram,MonteirohelpedtheRiverHawkstoa23-15-3clip(.561)andconsecutivepostseasonappearances. AtFranklinPierce,MonteirohelpedtheRavenstoNCAADivisionIIchampionshipsin1997and1999,aswellastheNCAATournamentsemifinalsin1998.HehelpedFPUtoanastoundingthree-yearrecordof62-2-0(.969)whichincludedthreeundefeatedseasonsintheNewEnglandCollegiateConference. AftergraduatingfromSouthernNewHampshireUniversity(thenNewHampshireCollege)in1997,Monteiroenjoyedasix-yearprofessionalcareerasastartingdefenderwiththePhantomsofNewHampshireoftheUnitedSoccerLeagues(USL).HehelpedthePhantomstoasix-yearclipof102-60-6(.607),whichincludedanappearanceintheUSLnationalsemifinalin1997andtheUSLchampionshipmatchin1998.HewasnamedtotheUSLAll-TournamentTeambothyears. In2001,Monteiroreceivedhis'C'coach-inglicensefromtheUnitedStatesSoccerFed-eration(USSF).HealsoservedasheadcoachoftheLadyPhantomsofNewHampshireoftheUSLW2Leaguefrom2003-05. Monteirowasatwo-yearstandoutfortheSNHUmen'ssoccerteamandhelpedthePenmentoatwo-yearclipof30-6-2andanappearanceinthe1995NCAATournament.Hereceivedhisdegreeinsportsmanagement. Previously,Monteirowasatwo-yearplayeratMassasoitCommunityCollegewhereheearnedAll-NewEnglandRegionhonorsasaseniorandledtheWarriorstotheNJCAATournamentsemifinals.Enroute,MonteirowasnamedthedefensivemostvaluableplayeroftheNewEnglandRegionalchampionship. BorninDakar,Senegal,MonteirowasraisedinBrockton,MA.HecurrentlylivesinManchester,NH,withhiswife,Claudine,andtheirdaughter,IsabellaRose(7)andson,Sebastian(5).

AmongChristofori'shighschoolcoachinghighlightswasatwo-yearundefeatedstreakathisalmamaterArlingtonH.S.whichresultedinapairofGreaterBostonLeaguetitles.HealsoenjoyedstintsatRindge&Latin(boys),BelmontH.S.(girls)andGroton-Dunstable,wherehehelpedthe2007girlstoa10-2-6clipandtheNo.4rankinginCentralMass. Intheprofessionalranks,ChristoforialsoservedasascoutwiththeSanJoseEarth-quakesin1982,whentheyvauntedGeorgeBest;andfortheNewEnglandRevolutionin1998underheadcoachWalterZenga. AnativeofActon,MA,EricSigmanreturnstothecoachingstaffforhisseventhyearandwillcontinueasthegoalkeepers'coach. Afour-yeargoalkeeperattheUniversityofVermont(1996-99),SigmanhelpedtheCatamountstoa31-20-4recordoverhisfinalthreeyears.Amongthehighlightswasa12-5-2clipin1997–upfroma5-12-2clipayearprior–whichsawUVMplacethirdintheAmericaEastConference. AgraduateofActon-BoxboroughH.S.,Sigmanwasathree-yearstartinggoalkeeperandearnedDualCountyLeagueall-starhonorsasasenior.HeledA-Btoconsecutivesecond-placefinishesin1995and1996andtoppedtheDualCountyLeagueinshutoutsin1996. Duringtheoffseason,SigmanplayedfortheBanditsSoccerClubfrom1992-99andhelpeditadvancetothestatefinalsthreetimes.Healsoservedasagoalkeepinginstruc-torfortheBanditsfrom1995-99. SigmanearnedhislawdegreefromSuf-folkUniversityinMayof2005andiscurrentlyageneralpractitionerinMedford,MA,whereheresideswithhiswifeLisaanddaughterEllison,bornthissummer.

Katelyn CampopianoFollowingastellarplay-ingcareeratUMassLowell,KatelynCam-popianomovedtothesidelinesandentersherthirdyearofadministra-tivedutiesinadditiontoassistinginmatches

andpractice. Afour-yearstarter,CampopianohelpedtransformtheRiverHawkdefense,withwhichshehelpedestablishschoolrecordsforshutouts(ninein2005and2007)andgoalsagainstaverage(0.85in2006)inaseason. UMassLowell'sgoalsallowed(19)andgoalsagainstaverage(1.11)inCampopiano'stenureatthetimewasthelowestofanyfour-yearperiodintheprogram'shistory.She

startedapossibleof75ofUML's80matchesfrom2004-07. Campopianowastherecipientofmanyhonorsinhercareer,particularlyasasenior,earningNSCAANewEnglandRegionandNortheast-10Conferencefirstteamstatus.
