Situated within the northwest quadrant of Washington, D.C., American University’s traditional-style campus has much to offer students in the way of comfort, modern conveniences, and quick, easy access to city life.

Our 84-acre, tree-lined campus, which was designated as a National Arboretum, is located at the top of Embassy Row in one of the most attractive, safe, and residential areas of our nation’s capital.

The center of campus, also referred to as “the quad,” is a focal point of student life not only because our academic buildings line its grassy borders, but also because it’s a place to meet-and-greet with friends and student groups, catch an impromptu game of ultimate frisbee or take part in an after-class debrief with professors.

Another favorite spot on campus is the beach volleyball pit located between the athletics fi elds. The adjacent grassy hillside is also a well known hangout for students on game days.

AcademicAcademicSupportSupport

The academic support program for student-athletes, a collaboration between the Academic Support Center and the Department of Athletics, assists student-athletes in successfully attaining academic goals and creating a balance between academics and athletics. The program serves to promote responsibility and initiative while encouraging student-athletes to take advantage of the rich resources offered at American University.

Academic counselors work with student-athletes on skills needed for success in the classroom, and provide information about educational options, university and NCAA requirements, as well as policies and procedures. The program focuses on the development of the total person through individual meetings, study hall and tutoring, and life skills workshops. AU’s academic support program coordinates with faculty, advisors, and coaches to support each student-athlete.

American University head fi eld hockey coach Steve Jennings served as an assistant coach to the United States Women’s Field Hockey team at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. The team, which was comprised entirely of fi rst-time olympians, completed pool play in fourth place with a record of one win, one loss and three draws. They fi nished in eighth place overall at the 2008 Olympic Games.

Jennings has also participated in the Olympics as an athlete, serving as the vice captain to the men’s fi eld hockey team at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

“The Olympic Games in Beijing were an incredible experience -- both as an opportunity to compete against the world’s best in the biggest arena sport has to offer and as a culmination of years of intense training and preparation. From the lighting of the Olympic torch in the Birds Nest to the atmosphere in the Olympic village to the daily chance to play and coach the game at its highest level, the games were a total thrill. While we did not leave China with a medal around our necks, an entire team without Olympic experience embraced the true spirit of the moment -- while other teams played it safe, we played to win -- each and every game. In the end, the team’s efforts made all of us, and hopefully an entire nation, proud.”

Steve Jennings has been a well-known fi gure in national and international fi eld hockey for two decades both as a coach and player, including serving as a coach on the 2008 United States Olympic Field Hockey Team.

Jennings is entering his 11th season as the head coach of AU’s women’s fi eld hockey program, where he has amassed a 132-63 (.679) career record. Under Jennings’ leadership, the Eagles have claimed an unprecedented six consecutive Patriot League Championships and have currently won 43 consecutive games against Patriot League opponents. Jennings has been named Patriot League Coach of the Year fi ve times, including each of the past four seasons.

Living the Olympic Dream

Prior to the 2008 AU fi eld hockey season, Jennings performed on fi eld hockey’s grandest stage – the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. He served as assistant coach for the U.S. National Women’s Field Hockey team, which captured eighth place in

the event.

Jennings helped guide the U.S. team to a 6-0 record in winning the Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Kazan, Russia. In the title match, the U.S. team defeated Belgium, 3-1, to clinch a berth to Beijing.

“Being involved in the Olympic team is such a tremendous honor – defi nitely a peak life experience that is hard to put into words,” Jennings said. “In the end, it meant getting a chance to see if you can be the absolute best and the power of being surrounded by people who have given literally everything they have to be there.”

International Coaching Experience

In addition to the Beijing Olympics, Jennings has assisted in two World Cups helping the U.S. in 2002 to a ninth place fi nish in Perth, Australia, and earning a sixth place fi nish in 2006 in Madrid, Spain. At the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Jennings helped the U.S. earn a silver medal after falling to No. 2 world-ranked Argentina 4-2 in the title match. An international coaching career that began in 2000 has also seen him travel with the national program to Holland, Germany, New Zealand, India, Argentina, Chile, Japan, Bermuda, England and Italy.

In addition to his work as an assistant coach with the national team, Jennings holds a Level III coaching certifi cation – the highest level for fi eld hockey in the United States. In May

2008, he became the fi rst U.S. citizen to be awarded the title of FIH Coach – High Performance after an

FIH fi nals course held in conjunction with the Champions Trophy in Monchengladbach,

Germany.

2008: Another Patriot League Championship

The 2008 season was another stellar campaign for Jennings’

Eagles. AU claimed the Patriot League Championship with a

5-2 victory over Bucknell. The Eagles went on to defeat Lock Haven in the NCAA Play-In Game to earn a trip to the NCAA Tournament Round of 16, where they were

defeated by second-ranked Wake Forest. AU fi nished the season with a 13-8 record, including a perfect 5-0 in Patriot League play, the sixth straight-season that AU has marched through the Patriot League unscathed.

In addition to the team’s success, many of Jennings’ student-athletes took home individual hardware for their efforts during the 2008 season. Irene Schickhardt was named a Longstreth/NFHCA Division I First Team All-American and Christine Fingerhuth earned third team honors. Schickhardt and Anne-Meike De Wiljes were named the Patriot League Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year, respectively, while Tatum Dyer was honored as the league’s Rookie of the Year. Five AU student-athletes were selected to All-Region Teams, including three to the First Team (Schickhardt, Fingerhuth, and De-Wiljes) and two to the Second Team (Kirstin Gebhart and Anne Van Erp).

Under Jennings’ leadership, the Eagles have also consistently performed well in the classroom. The 2008 season was no exception, as Jennings’ squad earned a 3.48 Fall GPA. As a team, the Eagles ranked fi fth in the country in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) National Academic Squad Rankings. Additionally, 15 American fi eld hockey student-athletes were honored to the NFHCA Division I National Academic Squad, while 17 earned spots on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll, the most of any Patriot League fi eld hockey team.

Playing at the Highest Level

Jennings also knows about playing fi eld hockey himself. He was a member of the U.S. Men’s National Team from 1991 to 1999 and played in over 90 international test matches. He competed in two Pan American Games, winning the bronze in 1995 during the event held in Mar Del Plata, Argentina. Jennings also competed with the U.S. U-21 team at the 1989 Junior World Cup in Ipoh, Malaysia. The highlight of his playing career came in 1996 when he represented the United States in the Centennial Olympic Games in Atlanta where he served as the team’s vice captain.

Jennings is a native of Bethesda, Md., and attended Walter Johnson High School. He graduated from the University of Maryland in 1997 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology.

Sarah Thorn Krombolz enters her ninth season with the American University fi eld hockey squad. After serving as the team’s assistant coach for six seasons, Krombolz was promoted to Associate Head Coach in 2007.

Krombolz has helped the Eagles to six consecutive Patriot League Championships and the program’s fi rst-ever NCAA Tournament win in 2004. Heading into the 2009 campaign, the Eagles have won 43 consecutive matches against Patriot League opponents.

In January 2008, she received her U.S. Field Hockey Association Level II Coaching Certifi cation.

Coaching Career

Building on her stellar playing career at the University of Iowa, Krombolz works

primarily with the defense and the goalkeepers,

helping to strengthen one of the nation’s top defensive units. Under her tutelage, Denise Infante, ‘08, garnered back-to-back All-American

honors before graduating in 2008.

In a memorable 2005 season, Krombolz helped American University’s defense rank seventh in the country in scoring defense, holding opponents to an average of 1.22 goals per game.

The 2005 team achieved nat iona l

rankings as high as fourth in the country, eventually fi nishing the season sixth.

Since joining the AU coaching staff in 2001, Krombolz continues to bring extensive knowledge and experience to the Jacobs Field turf. The 2008 summer marked the fourth year that Krombolz has directed her own camp through Revolution Camps. Currently, Krombolz runs the USFHA Futures Northern Virginia Site at American University, working as the head coach and site director. Krombolz has also been an assistant coach for two years with the Maryland High Performance Team.

Playing Career

As a four-year starter at Iowa, Krombolz was an All-America selection in 1999, a two time All-Region honoree (1998, 1999) and a three-time All-Big Ten selection. As a senior captain and the team’s co-MVP, Krombolz was named to the Big Ten All-Tournament Team on the way to leading her squad to the 1999 NCAA Final Four. The Hawkeyes went 9-0 overall and 5-0 in the Big Ten on their home turf at Grant Field in that season, just one win away from matching the perfect 10-0 record set in 1992.

Katie Ridd, a two-time NCAA National Champion and All-American at Wake Forest, is in her fi rst season as an assistant coach at American.

Ridd graduated from Wake Forest in 2004 after serving as a three-year starter for the ACC power. She was named First Team All-America in her senior season (2003). She also received First Team All-ACC recognition in both her junior and senior years. Wake Forest reached the NCAA Final Four in each of her four playing seasons in Winston-Salem (2000-03) as Ridd helped the Deamon Deacons to NCAA National Championships in 2002 and 2003.

“Katie’s experiences as a leader, winner and certainly as a two-time national champion will undoubtedly help take our program to another level,” commented Jennings. “Katie’s passion is contagious and her ability to relate to people will help her make the adjustment to our team a quick one. Everyone in the program is excited to welcome Katie as we are busy at work preparing for what we hope will be a standout year in 2009.”

Since graduation, Ridd has worked in sales and marketing at Unum in Charlotte, N.C. She also spent a year in New Zealand, where she played on a club fi eld hockey team. Recently, she has also been a fi eld hockey coach at Charlotte Country Day.

Nate Franks begins his third season as an assistant coach at American after graduating from Princeton University in 2007.

While at Princeton, Franks worked as the team manager and videographer for three seasons (2003-05) before becoming the student assistant in 2006. Franks worked primarily with the goalies and the defensive unit each of the four years he was at Princeton.

While working with the Tigers, Princeton fi eld hockey captured three Ivy League Championships and posted a 26-2 conference record. The squad earned three NCAA Tournament berths, advancing to the Elite Eight in 2006 after upsetting Old Dominion in the fi rst round.

A competitor in the sport himself, Franks was a member of the United States National Team practice squad in the summer of 2002. He currently plays halfback for the Clontarf Hockey Club Men’s First XI in Dublin, Ireland, and is the only American ever to play for the club. In the spring of 2009 his Clontarf team won promotion to Leinster Division 1 after fi nishing with a 15-0-1 league record. Franks is also still active in the US Field Hockey Association Men’s High Performance Program, fi nishing second with the Mid-Atlantic team at the 2009 Men’s National Championships.

Cornelius Kerwin was named president in the 2007-08 academic year after serving as acting and interim president since August 24, 2005. Dr. Kerwin is a longstanding member of the AU community. He earned a BA from American University in 1971 (followed by an MA in political science from the University of Rhode Island in 1973, and a PhD in political science from Johns Hopkins University in 1978) and has been a member of the AU faculty since 1975. He held a number of prominent leadership positions within the School of Public Affairs, including serving as dean from 1989 to 1997, acting provost from 1997 to 1998, and provost from 1998 to 2005.

A longtime supporter of AU athletics, Dr. Kerwin endorsed AU’s decision to move to the Patriot League in 2001, joining Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh, Army, and Navy in athletic competition that has resulted in 30 Patriot League championships (fi eld hockey, men’s cross country, women’s cross country, women’s lacrosse, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, men’s tennis, women’s tennis and women’s volleyball, and men’s basketball). Since fall 2005, the Department of Athletics and Recreation has reported directly to Dr. Kerwin, a move that refl ects the strong relationship between academic and athletic achievement at AU.

As provost, Dr. Kerwin was the university’s chief academic offi cer, leading approximately 475 full-time teaching faculty in AU’s six schools and colleges (College of Arts and Sciences, Kogod School of Business, School of Communication, School of International Service, School of Public Affairs, and Washington College of Law). Among the offi ces he supervised are: admissions, fi nancial aid, the Offi ce of Institutional Research and Assessment, the University Library, the Offi ce of the Registrar, and the Washington Semester Program and those reporting to the Dean of Academic Affairs (including the General Education and Honors Programs). His accomplishments as provost

include: working with deans and faculty to complete AU’s master’s and doctoral program reviews; overseeing creation of the University College Program for fi rst-year undergraduate students; leading the process to restructure faculty governance and create a new Faculty Senate; and overseeing AU’s decennial self-study that resulted in the Middle States Association Commission’s unconditional reaccreditation. Dr. Kerwin also advanced major efforts to support faculty scholarship, teaching, service, and diversity; bring faculty salaries to the AAUP–Level 1 standard; and develop plans for assessing student learning.

A professor of public administration in the School of Public Affairs, Dr. Kerwin is a nationally recognized specialist in public policy, with emphasis on the regulatory process. He teaches courses in administrative process, policy implementation, and American government and is actively engaged in research. Dr. Kerwin founded and directs AU’s Center for the Study of Rulemaking. He is the author of Rulemaking: How Government Agencies Write Law and Make Policy (3rd ed., 2003, Congressional Quarterly Press) and the coauthor of How Washington Works: The Executives Guide to Government (3rd ed., 1996). His scholarly articles have appeared in Public Administration Review, Journal of Politics, Policy Studies Review, Journal of Public Administration Research and Theory, Judicature, Justice System Journal, and Harvard Journal on Legislation.

American University named Keith Gill its 7th Director of Athletics and Recreation on June 1, 2007.

As Director of Athletics, Gill oversees the operations of all American University intercollegiate and intramural athletic programs, including more than 250 student-athletes participating in 16 varsity sports, the majority of which compete in the Patriot League Conference.

In just two years at American, Gill has helped to lead the athletics department to never before seen successes including back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament. Since his arrival Gill has also seen the volleyball team win a record eighth straight Patriot League Championship, the fi eld hockey team win a record sixth straight Patriot League Championship and the women’s basketball team make back-to-back postseason appearances for the fi rst time in program history. Individually, American has crowned 10 All-Americans over the past two seasons.

The Eagles have fl ourished in the classroom as well under Gill’s guidance as American’s 16 teams have continued

their streak of 18 consecutive semesters with a combined GPA over 3.0. This past year 152 student-athletes were named to the university’s Dean’s List as the student-athlete graduation rate rose to an astounding 89%.

Prior to coming to American, Gill spent three years at the University of Oklahoma. He oversaw a major portion of OU athletics, including men’s basketball, women’s soccer and baseball, and the supervision of personnel, budgets, facilities, fundraising, student-athlete issues and the selection and evaluation of coaches for these sports. He worked with the AD and staff in overseeing the strategic and annual planning process for the department.

Gill was the director of membership services at the NCAA from 2000 to 2004. He developed and communicated policies related to Division I intercollegiate athletics, including governance, rules compliance, diversity, gender equity, academic integrity, student-athlete welfare, fi scal integrity, strategic planning, sportsmanship and legislation. He oversaw and ensured the effective operation of the athletics certifi cation program, and managed a staff of 35 who provided education and guidance to Division I institutions conducting their periodic self-studies. Previously, Gill worked at the NCAA from 1995 to 1999 as a membership services representative.

At Vanderbilt from 1999 to 2000, Gill was an assistant athletic director and worked with the AD to implement the annual planning process to help 16 athletics teams achieve their academic and competitive goals. He worked with the National Commodore Club, major gifts, media relations and marketing and supported the Vanderbilt Board of Trustees by working with the athletics committee.

A 1994 graduate of Duke University with a bachelor’s degree in history and sociology, the Orlando, Fla., native was a four-year letterman in football. In 2006 he earned a masters degree from the University of Oklahoma.
