Now entering its 39th season, the Ithaca College field hockey programhas posted an overall record of 386-229-21 for a .624 winning percentage. The Bombers have been to 16 of the 24 NCAA tour-

naments, including every year from 1990-98. Ithaca won the 1982 nationalchampionship.

Nancy Hicks led the Bombers to a 6-0 record in 1968,Ithaca’s first varsity season. A year later Doris Kostrinskybegan her 27-year coaching career. The Bombers wereundefeated in 1969 (6-0) and 1970 (7-0), and had a 23-game winning streak.

From 1971-81 Ithaca won five New York StateAssociation of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women(NYSAIAW) titles, paced by scoring leaders Mary Ellen“Satch” Alger and Dee Dee Mayes and goalie KarenPatterson.

In 1979 competition outside the state became a playoff option, and theBombers placed second in the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics forWomen (AIAW) Division II regionals. The next season Ithaca finished thirdat the AIAW Division II tournament. Patti Klecha established schoolrecords for goals (29) and assists (16) in a season. The Bombers hosted thenational tournament in 1981 and finished third.

In 1982 the NCAA became the sole governing body for women’s athletics, and Ithaca won the national championship, beating Trenton State,2-1, on penalty strokes. The championship was Ithaca’s first in a women’s

ITHACA COLLEGEsport and third overall. Cathy Foto, Clare Lamont,Tracey Moyer and Diane Rapp were named to the NCAA all-tournament team.

The Bombers came within one goal of defending their crown in 1983,losing 2-1 to Trenton State in the finals at Ithaca. The team was led by stand-out goaltender Karen Howarth, a first-team all-American. The Bomberscontended for another championship in 1984, losing in the NCAA semifi-nals, 1-0, to Messiah.

NCAA playoff invitations in 1985, 1986 and 1987 ran Ithaca’s streak tonine years in the national tournament. After consecutive losing seasons, Ithacareturned to the national tournament in 1990. The Bombers won the New YorkState Women’s Collegiate Athletic Association (NYSWCAA) crown, but wereeliminated in the first round of the NCAA tournament by William Smith.In 1991 Ithaca was paced by all-Americans Sue Bender and RachaelGreener, who combined to score all three goals in a 3-1 win over OhioWesleyan in the NCAA playoffs. Ithaca was eliminated by Lock Haven, 2-1, in the regional final.

Bender and goalie Karen Hollands earned all-American honors in1992, leading the team to another NCAA appearance. The Bombers avengeda regular-season loss to Oneonta with a 1-0 win in the regional semifinalbefore falling to eventual national champion William Smith, 2-1, in theregional finals. In 1993 the Bombers advanced to the regional finals onceagain before losing, 1-0, to Cortland, the eventual champion. Hollandsearned first-team all-American honors in 1993.

Ithaca lost first-round NCAA playoff games in each of the next three yearsbefore beating Eastern Mennonite in the first round of the 1997 tournament.The following season the Bombers reached the NCAA playoffs for theninth straight year, losing toGettysburg in the regionalsemifinals. Goaltender JenStoneburg was the leader ofIthaca’s last three NCAAplayoff teams, posting 21career shutouts and a 1.12goals-against average. The1999 team competed in boththe NYSWCAA and ECACtournaments. In 2000 Ithacawas back in the NCAAs, losing to Williams, 2-0, in thefirst round. Senior defenderBecky Karver was a second-team all-American selection.The 2001 team was againback in the postseason, com-peting in the state and ECACplayoffs. In 2002 Ithaca wonthe program’s eighth state titleat the NYSWCAA tour-nament. Over the next two seasons Ithaca has stretched its string of postseason appearances to 15 consecu-tive seasons with trips to theNYSWCAA tournament.

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa.—Ithaca claimed the program’s first national championshipby topping Trenton State (now The College of New Jersey) 4-2 in strokes after thetwo teams had played to a 1-1 tie through regulation.

The Bombers got on the scoreboard first on an unassisted goal by SophomoreTracey Moyer midway through the first half. The Lions tied the game on a penaltystroke with 16:55 remaining in regulation.

Shooting first in the penalty stroke session, Ithaca took a 2-1 lead. Senior DianeRapp converted her attempt, followed by a successful stroke by senior all-AmericanCathy Foto. The Lions made their first try and were stopped on their second. Bothteams traded successful strokes on their third attempt (with senior all-AmericanMary Klecha connecting for Ithaca). When sophomore Barb Wachowiak was successful on her attempt, Trenton State was left needing a successful stroke to staveoff elimination; they were unsuccessful and Ithaca emerged with the school’s first NCAAtitle in a women’s sport. Freshman goalie Karen Howarth made five saves; Ithacaoutshot Trenton State 46-6.

Ithaca had advanced to the national championship game by routing Cortland 5-1 in the opening round of the NCAA playoffs behind three goals by Foto and Klecha’stwo assists. In the national semifinals, Foto and Moyer scored second-half goals and Howarth stopped two shots for the shutout as the Bombers blanked Franklin & Marshall 2-0.

Another milestone was reached in 2005, when Tasha Snowden becamethe first Bomber to be named Empire 8 Player of the Year.

Kostrinsky received another honor last year when she was inducted intothe National Field Hockey Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

Tracey Houk, Head Coach

Tracey Houk enters her 11th season ashead coach of the field hockey program.Houk has led the Bombers to four NCAA

playoff appearances, including a trip to theregionals in 2000, and has an overall record of98-92. She has coached four all-Americansand led Ithaca to within a game of the 1997NCAA semifinals.

Houk came to Ithaca after two years ashead coach at Division II Mansfield University,where she compiled a 9-19-1 record, includinga 6-8-1 mark in 1995 that was a three-game

improvement over the previous year. Houk was head coach at Massachusetts-Lowell in 1993.

Houk earned a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education fromNorth Carolina-Chapel Hill in 1989. She helped the Tar Heels win fourAtlantic Coast Conference field hockey titles during her career. She servedas an assistant coach for one season at Bloomsburg University in 1989 andwas a graduate assistant coach for two years at Ohio University, earning amaster’s degree in physical education in 1992. Houk then returned toBloomsburg and helped guide the Huskies to the 1992 Division II nationalchampionship game.

Houk is also an instructor in the School of Health Sciences and HumanPerformance.

SANDRA JONESSandra Jones is entering her first year as a mem-ber of the Bombers’coaching staff after serving asa member of the Wells coaching staff the past twoseasons. She was the co-head coach of the Expresslast year and served as the teams’ assistant coachin 2004. Jones also served as an assistant coach forthe softball (2004, 2005) and women’s swimming(2004-05) teams at Wells.

Jones played three years of field hockey for theExpress and shares the team record for most goalsin a game with three. She served as team captain her senior year and was atwo-time conference all-star. Jones was also a two-time all-conferenceselection as a member of the softball team. She was named the team MVPas a senior after earning rookie of the year honors as a freshman.

Jones received her bachelor’s degree in visual arts from Wells in 2004with an education minor.

KAITLYN SKELLEYGraduate Assistant Coach

Kaitlyn Skelley is entering her first year as a mem-ber of the Bombers’coaching staff after graduatingfrom the University of New Hampshire in 2006.

While at UNH, Skelley was a four-year starteras a member of the Wildcats’ field hockey team. She was a back her freshman and sophomore sea-sons before moving to the forward and midfieldpositions her junior and senior years. Skelley tiedfor the team-lead in scoring as a junior with 14points and scored a team-leading seven goals. She served as a team captainher senior season and was fourth on the team in scoring with four goals and11 points.

In addition to her playing career, Skelley has coached at several fieldhockey camps, including the STX Field Hockey Camp (2004), Elite FieldHockey Camp (2005-06) and with the U.S. Field Hockey Future’s program(2003-06).

Skelley graduated from UNH with a bachelor’s degree in managementwith a psychology minor. She is pursuing her master’s degree in sport management and media at Ithaca.

The Ithaca College field hockey team looks to capture its first conferencetitle since 2003 and return to the NCAA tournament. The Bombers return12 letter winners from last year, including five all-conference selections.

2005 RECAP: Ithaca posted a 5-11 record last year, including a 2-2 recordin conference play. Natasha Snowden was named the Empire 8 Player of the Year and was a first-team all-conference selection along with Melanie McKaney, Bryce Meck and Kelly Palmer. Elyse Green was asecond team all-conference selection, while Stacey Brown and LeslieRobinson received honorable mention. Five Bombers were named to theNFHCA’s All-Academic Team.

KEY LOSSES: Ithaca lost five starters tograduation: Erin McDonald, Palmer, MelissaPope, Alex Scudder and Snowden. Snowden,a four-time conference all-star, led the team inscoring with seven goals and three assists for 17points, and ranks among Ithaca’s career leadersin goals (ninth– 34), assists (ninth–17) and points(eighth–85). Palmer recorded a team-leading six assists, ranked fourth with 10 points, and istied with Snowden for ninth on the career assistslist with 17. Both were first team all-conferenceselections. McDonald started all 16 games andled the team with three defensive saves.

BACK: Seniors Sarah Magliochetti andMcKaney and junior Leslie Robinson eachstarted all 16 games last season. Robinson led the team with four defensive saves, whileMcKaney recorded two defensive saves.Sophomores Marissa Frank and Ally Swinkalso return to the backfield.

MIDFIELD: Meck started all 16 games last season and ranked secondon the team in scoring with four goals and three assists for 11 points.Classmate Tina Capozzi, who will serve as team captain along withMcKaney and Meck, saw action in 12 games as a junior. Frank and Swinkcould also see time in the midfield.

FORWARD: Green was second on the team with five goals as a fresh-man and was tied for third in scoring with 10 points. Junior Stacey Brownstarted all 16 games and was fifth on the team in scoring with three goalsand three assists for nine points. Capozzi and Meck could also see time atforward. Also returning are sophomores Courtney Clark and RachelHillerman.

GOALIE: Senior Andrea Baraiola returns after starting every gameeach of the past two seasons. She played every minute of every game in 2005,recording a career-best 134 saves in 16 games. Baraiola had six double-digitsave efforts, including a career-high 22 saves against Skidmore, and recordedher second career shutout in a 1-0 win over Rochester.

2006 SCHEDULE: The Bombers will once again face a challengingschedule in 2006, including six teams that participated in last year’s NCAAtournament: Cortland, College of New Jersey, Skidmore, Springfield, Uticaand William Smith. Ithaca will play an expanded conference schedule asStevens Institute of Technology and Washington & Jefferson join Elmira,defending conference champion Hartwick, Nazareth and Utica. The Bomberswill play 11 of their 18 games at Yavits Field, including each of their firstseven to open the season.

Natasha Snowdenranks eighth on Ithaca’sall-time scoring list with85 career points and istied for ninth with 34 goals and 17 assists.

ANDREABARAIOLAG, Sr., 5-2; Wallingford, Conn.2005: Baraiola started all 16games in goal. She recordeda career-best 3.80 goals-against average, a .732 savepercentage and one shutout.

She made a career high 22 saves against #12Skidmore and recorded 10 or more saves in sevengames. 2004: Baraiola started all 18 games in goal.She recorded a .687 save percentage, a 4.10 goals-against average and posted one shutout. She wasnamed Empire 8 Goalie of the Week twice and was a member of the NFHCAall-academic squad. She recorded a career-high 14 saves against Geneseo.2003: Baraiola played in goal in three games for the Bombers. She earneda 5.74 goals-against average and a .667 save percentage in 47 minutes ingoal. High School: A 2003 graduate of Mark T. Sheehan High School,Baraiola was coached by Tina Marci. She earned three varsity letters andwas an all-state and all-league selection. Personal: An integrated market-ing communications major, she is the daughter of Bruce and Sharon Baraiola.

STACEY BROWNF, Jr., 5-2; Barre, Vt.2005: Brown started all 16games for the Bombers. Sherecorded three goals with threeassists and was tied for fifth on the team with nine points,earning her all-conference hon-orable mention. 2004: Brown

played in 10 games for the Bombers. High School:A 2004 graduate of Spaulding High School, Brownwas coached by Michelle Durell. She was a leagueall-star in both field hockey and softball. Personal:A health education and physical education major,she is the daughter of Russell and Melissa Brown. Brown was a member ofIthaca’s 2005 softball team that placed fourth in the nation.

Mechanicsburg, Pa.2005: Meck started all 16games and finished second onthe team in scoring with fourgoals and three assists for 11points. She was a first-teamall-conference selection. 2004:Meck started all 18 games for the Bombers. Sheranked third on the team with 14 points on fivegoals and four assists. She recorded a career-highthree points with a goal and an assist in theNYSWCAA playoff victory over Brockport. She

was named to the NFHCA all-academic squad. 2003: Meck played in all17 games, including 12 starting assignments. She recorded six points on threegoals. Her first career goal was the Bombers’ only goal in the first game ofthe season. She scored the game-winning goal in a 4-2 win over Geneseo.She was named to the NFHCA all-academic squad and the Empire 8Presidents’List following both the fall and spring semesters. High School:A 2003 graduate of Mechanicsburg Area High School, Meck was coachedKristin Cashman and earned three varsity letters. She was an all-Sentineland all-Patriot honorable mention selection. The Empire 8 expands to seventeams in 2006 as Elmira, Hartwick,Ithaca, Nazareth and Utica will bejoined by two affiliate members,Stevens Institute of Technology andWashington & Jefferson College.This year marks the final season inwhich the Empire 8 field hockeychampion will be determined byround-robin play. Beginning in2007, the top four teams in regularseason play will face off in a post-season conference tournament.Stevens Institute of Technology willbe a full-time member of the Empire8 in all sports beginning in 2007.
