Jackie MacMillan guides the St. Scholastica women’s hockey program into its fourth season in 2013-14.
The Saints have made gradual improvements in each of the program’s first three seasons under MacMillan. In 2012-13, the Saints won their first postseason games and series, sweeping Lake Forest to advance to the NCHA O’Brien Cup semifinals. That season also saw the program’s first AHCA All-American First Team selection in Nina Waidacher.
In the team’s second season, the Saints tied fourth in the NCHA and qualified for their first O’Brien Cup playoffs. The Saints more than doubled their win total in conference play and nearly doubled it overall. CSS was 8-2 in one-goal games and were a perfect 7-0 when leading after two periods.
In the Saints’ inaugural season, the Saints won their first-ever game with a 3-0 defeat of Augsburg College in front of 1,246 fans. With a squad of 26, 21 of which were freshmen, the team was highly competitive, losing 10 of their 16 games by just one goal.
Prior to coming over to CSS, MacMillan spent two years as the head coach at Division III New England College, guiding the Pioneers to 15 wins in her first full season, which tied a single-season program record and led them to the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) East Championship game for the second time in school history. During her three seasons at NEC, she accumulated a 31-26-3 record.
Prior to moving to New England, MacMillan spent three seasons as the assistant coach at Division I Union College. Other coaching experience for MacMillan includes serving as an assistant coach at St. Olaf College and as an assistant coach for Shattuck-St. Mary’s Prep. She was also an instructor for numerous camps and hockey schools including, USA 18-Under Development Camp and NCWHL Hockey Clinic.
MacMillan is very familiar with first-year women’s hockey programs as she was part of the first recruiting class for the University of Wisconsin in 1999.
“I was extremely blessed to be a part of the inaugural team at the University of Wisconsin,” MacMillan said. “What I remember are many of the first moments: the first practice, game, road trip and all of my teammates who were a part of those first four years. I hope to help the first women’s hockey players at St. Scholastica realize how truly unique they will be in the first years of the program.”
As a starting goalie for the Badgers, MacMillan led the nation in goals against average in 2002. She was a first team all-Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) selection in 2000 and was a second team choice in 2002. She was named WCHA Player of the Week six different times during her career and was on the WCHA All-Academic Team in 2002 and 2003.
During her four years MacMillan had 75 wins in between the pipes. She still holds numerous goaltending records for the Badgers. She also played for the United States under-22 national team in 2000.
MacMillan, who grew up in Buffalo, Minn., played with boys teams since she was five years old. She was a captain on the Buffalo High School Boys varsity team her senior year. She was inducted into the Buffalo Hockey Hall of Fame in 2005. MacMillan’s father, Mike, played goaltender at the University of Wisconsin-Stout.

Josh Crowley enters his second season as the goaltending goal on Coach MacMillan’s women’s hockey staff in 2013-14. Crowley was a three-year starter at Rochester Lourdes High School.
The Rochester, Minn. native is currently student at Lake Superior College in Duluth studying Respira-tory Therapy. He is also an instructor at the Andy Anderson Goalie School.
Jessi Flink enters her fourth season as an as-sistant on the women’s hockey staff in 2013-14. Flink was a key member of the inaugural UMD women’s hockey team and was a part of the NCAA Division I National Championship teams in both 2001 and 2002. She was also on the WCHA All-Academic Team 2001 and 2002.
“Jessi has been a part of building a National Championship program at UMD and her expe-rience will be instrumental for helping build a successful program here at St. Scholastica,” head coach Jackie MacMillan said.
After her playing days, she was an assistant at Duluth East High School from 2003 to 2005. Just prior to taking the CSS assistant job, Flink worked as an Engineering Technician at Golder Associates Inc.
During the summer of 2011, Flink coached at the USA Hockey Select 16/17 Player Development Camp and also at the University of Minnesota-Duluth Hockey Camp. She was an evaluator at the Minnesota Reebok High Performance 17s.

Significant changes to the membership and leadership of both the Men’s and Women’s Northern Collegiate Hockey Association became official in 2013.
The Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association, which added the St. Norbert and St. Scholastica men’s programs, will move forward as the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association.
The NCHA Women’s Conference will continue to add to its storied history and tradition as it drops the puck on its 14th season. The conference will continue with the same members as last year, minus the Wisconsin state schools that departed.
Both the Men’s and Women’s conferences will retain their NCAA tournament automatic qualification status, meaning the conference playoff champions will gain automatic entry into the NCAA tournament.
Along with the changes in membership, the NCHA Men’s and Women’s leagues will utilize common executive leadership while having separate administrative structure, constitutions and bylaws. Dr. G. Steven Larson will serve as Commissioner of both conferences, having previously served as Commissioner of the MCHA.
“We are very pleased to announce these changes as we are moving into the transitional phases of our women’s and men’s conferences,” Larson said. “It was very important for us to respect and recognize the traditions of both associations while simultaneously moving forward with a new perspective to reflect the changes that have taken place. Needless to say, this is a very exciting period of progression for member institutions and our hockey programs.”
Jim Olson, who served as the Director of Officials for the MCHA, will now serve in the same role for both the NCHA Men’s and Women’s Conferences.
Chris Zills and Brian Monahan, who previously worked behind the scenes for the MCHA and NCHA to publicize their respective leagues, will be moving into similar, but different roles moving forward for the NCHA. Monahan will serve in the role of Director of Public Relations, taking an active role in promoting, social media, blogging and other “faces” of the media. Zills will be the Director of Sports Information, maintaining the behind-the-scenes aspect of the communications department.
“Moving the eight current MCHA men’s programs forward as the NCHA brings together our men and women under one umbrella,” Adrian president & chair of the MCHA/NCHA president’s council Jeff Docking said. “We can now work on promoting growth on both fronts, while keeping 30-plus years of combined championship tradition alive.”
The Women’s playoff champion will be awarded the Slaats Cup, named in honor of Lake Forest College Director of Athletics Jackie Slaats, in recognition of her efforts and dedication in pioneering the formation of the Women’s NCHA. The regular-season champion will now receive the “Kronschnabel Cup”, named after Bill Kronschnabel, the commissioner of the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association from 2002-13. He served as the NCHA Supervisor of Officials from 1998 to 2005 and also played a role in the former MCHA as its Supervisor of Officials in its early stages.
“We felt it was very important to honor and recognize the individuals who were so important in pioneering and fostering the development of the MCHA and NCHA,” Larson said. “Their leadership and vision have been instrumental in the success of both associations.”
“I am really excited about the coming together of the two leagues and about both the synergy and energy that will result from having our men and women compete under the same name,” Slaats said. “I am also honored and humbled to have the new league playoff championship bear my name. It’s hard to believe how quickly, and how much, women’s hockey has grown since the initial formation of a women’s division in the spring of 2000. I honestly could not be happier or more proud of the outcome.”
“Those of us at Concordia University are very excited to be a part of the new direction and strategic vision for our hockey conference,” MCHA DASC Chair Rob Barnhill said. “The level of competition in our new conference will be rigorous and the student-athlete experience will be greatly enhanced by participating with student-athletes from likeminded and like-missioned institutions.”
The online home of both the NCHA Men’s and Women’s Conferences will be www.nchahockey.org. Changes to the web site will gradually take place in the coming months to reflect the exciting changes aforementioned.

2013 INDUCTION CLASSDan Seeler – Men’s Soccer/Men’s Hockey – 1978-82Seeler initially came to St. Scholastica because of the hockey program, but decided to also play soccer when the team was introduced in 1978. He was named the team’s MVP three times and still holds the men’s soccer program record for most goals scored in a game when he netted five against UMD in 1979. Seeler is only one of four players to record 10 points in a game in program history. He ranks second all-time in career goals (56) and third in points (130). He recorded the first hat trick in program history, scoring three against Mount Senario College (Wis.) in 1978. He ranks fourth on the program list with 19 goals during the 1981 season. While he was scoring goals for the soccer team, he was preventing goals for the hockey team as a goaltender. Seeler was named the team’s MVP for the 1981-82 season.
Greg Cane – Men’s & Women’s Soccer Coach – 1985-93Cane was part of the St. Scholastica men’s and women’s soccer programs for 15 years, coaching both programs and also as a player. He played for the men’s team from 1979-82 and was a three-year starter as a defender. He was a captain his senior season. However, even before he played for the Saints, Cane was the equipment manager of the CSS Hockey team, beginning when he was 15 years old and until his sophomore year of college. After his playing days, Cane then stepped in the coaching box as an assistant from 1983-84 before becoming head coach of the men’s team for nine years from 1985-1993. Cane accumulated a record of 104-55-12 in nine seasons and led the Saints to the 1988 and 1989 National Small College Athletic Association (NSCAA) National Championships. He was named the NSCAA Coach of the Year in 1988. He had just one losing season in his nine years as the men’s coach. In 1990, Cane became the first-ever coach of the CSS Women’s Soccer program. He coached both the men’s and women’s programs from 1990-1993 before becoming the first head coach of the University of Minnesota-Duluth women’s soccer program in 1994.
Jill Tribble Koszarek – Women’s Soccer – 1992-95Tribble was recruited to St. Scholastica by fellow Hall of Fame inductee Greg Cane in 1992. Tribble finished her soccer career third on the scoring list with 146 points. She ranks third all-time in goals scored (55) and fourth in assists (36). Tribble had an historic 1995 season for the Saints, setting program records for points (73), goals (26) and assists (21) in a season. She was named the team’s Most Valuable Player that season in leading the Saints to the program’s first winning season and first NAIA Regional appearance. Tribble is just one of two players in program history to record at least 10 points in a contest when she recorded 10 against Viterbo University (Wis.) in 1995. She is also tied for the program record for assists in a game as she recorded four assists in back-to-back games during the 1995 season. Tribble earned the NAIA Scholar-Athlete Award in 1994.
Leland Swenson – Baseball – 1997-2000Swenson was the first CSS baseball player to a sign a professional contract with a Major League Baseball organization when he signed with the Texas Rangers. Swenson is dubbed “the greatest shortstop” in the baseball program’s history. He was named the team’s Rookie of the Year in 1997 and was a four-time first team All-UMAC selection. In 1999, he was named a NCAA Division III All-American and a first team All-Midwest Region choice. In 2000, Swenson was named the NAIA Region 3 Player of the Year and a second team NAIA All-American. Swenson was also named the UMAC Player of the Year in 2000. The two-time team gold glove recipient is tied for the program record for most hits (83) and holds the program record for RBIs (77) in a season, doing so in 2000. Swenson ranks fourth in program history in career hits (225) and fifth in runs scored (173). Swenson was part of the 1999 NCAA Division III Tournament squad and 2000 NAIA Super Regional Tournament team.
1999 Baseball TeamThe 1999 CSS baseball team put the program on the map. Led by late head coach John Baggs, the Saints qualified for its first NCAA Division III baseball tournament. CSS would play three extra inning games at the regional, two with top-ranked and host University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and another with 13th-ranked UW-Stevens Point. The Saints would fall twice to the No.1-ranked Titans, both in 11 innings, but defeated the Pointers for the program’s first NCAA Regional Tournament victory on a Justin Harriman walk-off home run in the 10th. The squad featured eight All-UMAC first team selections. Kevin Kuklinski was named the UMAC Player of the Year and Dave Schlangen was the UMAC Pitcher of the Year. Schlangen, Harriman and Leland Swenson were first team All-Midwest Region choices, while Swenson was also named an All-American. The pitching staff set a single season program record with a 1.97 earned run average, which ranked third in the nation. The staff also tied a then-NCAA record with 13 shutouts. The team’s .965 fielding percentage ranked second in the country.
