“Don’t let the sum totalof your existence be8-10 pounds of air.”

The deflated basketball, thetrademark for GeorgetownBasketball since 1972, is a

message for each new recruit.“The deflated ball gets players to

understand that one day basketballwill be over, be it four years fromnow when you graduate, or 20

years from now when your NBAcareer is over,” says coach JohnThompson III. “One day the air’s

going to go out of that ball, so youhave to prepare yourself for life

after basketball.”The symbol is as relevant today

as it was when coach Thompson’sillustrious father ran the program.

The Georgetown tradition ofgraduation — 107 of 109 members

of the men’s basketball programthat have stayed four years have

received their degree — continuesunder John Thompson III.

Education ensures success, and afuture without education has the

value of an empty basketball.

What Is a hoya?

Many years ago, when all Georgetown students were required to study Greek and Latin, the University’s teams were nicknamed “The Stonewalls.” It is suggested that a student, using Greek and Latin terms, started the cheer “Hoya Saxa!”, which translates into “What Rocks!” The name proved popular and the term “Hoyas” was eventually adopted for all Georgetown teams.

the GeoRGetoWn oFFense“The ‘system’ is more about how you see the game than about plays. It’s about adjusting and adapting to your own skills and strengths, and the strengths and skills of your opponent. If you look at the Sacramento Kings, Washington Wizards, Northwestern, Richmond or Princeton, they obvi-ously aren’t the same teams playing the exact same style of ball. But the principles they play by are the same – movement, reads, sharing, patience and precision. You take the skills and personality of your team and tweak the system accordingly. – John thompson III

John thompson III FoundatIon The John Thompson III Foundation was established in 2007. The mission of the John Thompson III Foundation is to foster community-based charities that serve at-risk children and families. The primary fo-cus is education and healthcare. The Foundation partners primarily, but not exclusively, with non-profi ts in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan region which specialize in programs targeted to underserved children and families. The John Thompson III Foundation intends to aid those organi-zations working within Washington, D.C. to address the community’s more dire conditions, including:• The 2005 estimated poverty rate was 19.8 percent of all residents, or 98,069 persons, living below the federal poverty level • 36 percent of all children and 42 percent of all African-American children were living below the federal poverty level in 2005.• While the District ranks second highest in per capita personal income among the states, it also ranks third highest in overall poverty rates and highest in poverty rates for children.• More than 40% of youth in the District do NOT complete high school.• Nearly 49% of the youth that are enrolled in the majority of the District’s high schools are truant.• In 2005-06, only 27 percent of all DCPS and public charter school students tested at a proficient or advanced level in math.• Cancer is the second leading cause of death among District residents (22% of all deaths are due to cancer alone). Cancer is 27 percent more prevalent among blacks (512.8 cases per 100,000 popu-lation) than whites (404.5 cases per 100,000 population). In the District of Columbia, the percentage of women who receive prenatal care varies from 70 percent among blacks to 90 percent among whites.• District of Columbia has higher rates of heart disease, stroke and all cancers on average than the rest of the United States.• The Infant Mortality Rate for the District of Columbia has decreased from 11.9 per 1,000 live births in 2000 to 10.6 per 1,000 live births in 2001. The rate has declined by 42 percent over a 10-year period since 1992. But is still almost double the national average.• The January 2006 homeless count included 3,485 homeless adults and children in families. The 2nd Annual JTIII Fest and Community Block Party was held on Saturday, September 18. The Block Party, a fun-filled family festival for children and adults, was hosted by the Southeast Tennis & Learn-ing Center (STLC) in Southeast Washington, D.C. (701 Mississippi Av-enue). The festival included games, basketball and tennis clinics, crafts created by the STLC, fun rides for children and, most importantly, nu-merous health screenings. The afternoon was highlighted by a concert featuring the legendary Chuck Brown. The primary 2008 beneficiaries from the 1st Annual Foundation Weekend include the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Washington, Capital Breast Care Center, Southeast Tennis & Learning Center and Washing-ton Jesuit Academy.
