K-STATE OPENS 2013-14 SEASON AGAINST TENNESSEE STATE The Wildcats will officially begin the 2013-14 season on Friday night, as Kansas State hosts Tennessee State at 5:45 p.m., for a “Wildcat Weekend” women’s and men’s basketball doubleheader. Friday evening’s game is the first of a two- game home stand for K-State, as the Wildcats will have a quick turnaround to host Charlotte on Sunday, Nov. 10 at 12:30 p.m. Friday night’s season opener is part of a “Wildcat Weekend,” as fans can purchase a general admission ticket for $3 for the women’s game by showing their men’s ticket from the Northern Colorado game later that night at the door. For more in- formation, contact the K-State Athletics Ticket Office at 1-800-221-CATS, visit the box office in Bramlage Coliseum or log onto www.kstatesports.com. K-State’s game against the Lady Tigers can be seen live on K-StateHD.TV. Handling the play-by-play will be Dave Riggert and former K-State letterwinner Claire Coggins will handle the color analysis. The game audio will also be available on the K-State Sports Network and for free at kstatesports.com. In K-State’s exhibition finale on Friday, the Wildcats rallied in the second half to defeat Alaska-Anchorage, 73-65. The Wildcats did their fair share of damage in the paint and on second chance opportunities. K-State scored 42 of their 73 points in the paint and tallied 80 of its 158 points in the paint in the Wildcats’ two exhibition games. Kansas State outrebounded the Seawolves by 17, 52-35, and pulled in 25 offensive rebounds which led to 17 second chance points. K-State attacked the offensive glass in its two exhibition games, with the Wildcats pulling in 40 offensive rebounds which led to 38 second chance points. Leading the way for the Wildcats on Friday were senior Katya Leick, freshman Leticia Romero and sophomore Bri Craig. Leick registered 24 points on 11-of-17 shooting including a 2-of-3 effort from beyond the arc and pulled in 12 re- bounds. Leick keyed K-State’s second half rally, as she scored 18 of her 24 points in the second stanza including 12 straight to put the Wildcats into the lead. Including the three games K-State played in Italy in August, Leick has registered double figures in points in three of K-State’s five exhibition games. Romero registered 15 points, nine rebounds, three assists and three steals against the Seawolves. In K-State’s two ex- hibition games, Romero averaged 20 points and 10.5 rebounds while shooting 12-of-13 from the foul line. Craig tallied 11 points, three rebounds and three steals. In her freshman season in 2012-13, the native of Lincoln, Neb., reached double figures in scoring 14 times and carded two or more made 3-point field goals in a game 18 times. AT A GLANCE: TENNESSEE STATE Tennessee State will look to a younger roster in 2013-14 to im-prove upon its 13-15 record from a season ago. The Lady Tigerswelcome in eight newcomers this season and were tabbed to finishfifth in the Ohio Valley Conference East Division by the league’scoaches and sports information directors. Leading Tennessee State from the bench in the 2013-14 seasonis second-year head coach Larry Joe Inman. The 1970 graduate ofAustin Peay is the all-time winningest coach in Ohio Valley Confer-ence (OVC) history with his record of 493-332 (.598) and is aneight-time OVC Coach of the Year selection. Inman, who was in-

ducted into the OVC Hall of Fame in 2009, served as head coach ofthe Eastern Kentucky women’s basketball team from 1988-2008,compiling a 319-244 record and leading the Lady Colonels to twoOVC Tournament championships and two NCAA Tournament ap-pearances (1996-97, 2004-05). On the floor, the Lady Tigers welcome back two starters fromthe 2012-13 season and will welcome in eight newcomers. K-STATE NEARING 850 WINS With a 69-64 win at Nebraska on Feb. 19, 2011, Kansas Statebecame the 13th program in NCAA Division I women’s basketballhistory to record 800 or more wins. K-State’s record entering its46th season of women’s basketball stands at 842-510 (.623) [seechart on page 5]. The Wildcats have accumulated 23 20-win seasons and havesecured 259 victories inside Bramlage Coliseum. K-State has 143wins in the Big 12 Conference, 11 in the NCAA Tournament and 13in the Postseason WNIT. The Cats have registered 211 victorieswhen they were ranked in the Associated Press top-25 poll andachieved 71 wins against teams ranked in the AP poll. K-State headcoach Deb Patterson has achieved the most wins of any of K-State’s eight head coaches with 339.

PRESEASON POLL NOT THE FINAL VERDICT FOR WILDCATS Kansas State was slotted for a ninth-place finish by the Big 12coaches in the annual preseason poll for the second straight sea-son. Despite the low prediction, K-State has a history of exceedingthe expectations of the league’s coaches on a consistent basis. In2012-13, the Wildcats tallied an eighth-place league finish withjust seven healthy players on its roster for a majority of the Big 12season. K-State leads the Big 12 in exceeding the preseason predictions,finishing on average 1.2 positions higher than its preseason pre-diction in the 16 polls that have a preseason prediction and a finalstanding attached to it, including the 2012-13 season. PATTERSON IN 18TH SEASON AT K-STATE Deb Patterson, the career wins leader in K-State women’s bas-ketball history and the longest-tenured women’s basketball coachin school history, owns a career record of 339-207 (.621) includinga record of 143-133 (.518) in the Big 12. She led K-State to a pairof Big 12 regular season titles (2003-04 and 2007-08). Patterson’s300th career victory came in the 2011 Big 12 Championshipsagainst Iowa State on March 9, 2011. Following the 2007-08 season, Patterson was named the Big12 Coach of the Year by the league’s coaches and a number ofmedia outlets. She also garnered national attention, finishing asthe Russell Athletic/WBCA Region V Coach of the Year and a finalistfor the WBCA and AP National Coach of the Year honors. Patterson has steered K-State to 11 postseason appearancesduring the last 12 seasons, including a trip to the NCAA MideastRegional Semifinals in 2002, the 2006 WNIT Postseason crown anda second round trip during the 2012 NCAA Tournament.

WILDCATS TAKE IN THE SIGHTS OF ITALY In mid-August, K-State women’s basketball took a 10-day,three-game trip through Italy to help build continuity among itsyoung roster. While making stops in Milan, Venice, Florence, Pisaand Rome, the Wildcats were able to go 3-0 on the trip, outscoringits opponents by an average of 77.7 to 35.0. Under NCAA Bylaw 30.7, foreign tours are permissible for anyinstitution’s athletic team and may be taken once every four years.In order to prepare for the games in Italy, K-State is allowed 10team practices this summer. In the summer of 2008, K-State traveled to the Czech Republicand Austria. Like the two games K-State played in the Czech Re-public, the three games the Wildcats will play in Italy will be playedunder the international rules of FIBA. TALLER K-STATE TEAM IN 2013-14 K-State fans will notice a significant physical difference in the2013-14 Wildcats, compared to the 2012-13 roster. Entering thisseason, K-State’s roster averages a height of 5’-11” led by fresh-man forward Breanna Lewis at 6’-5”. This is the tallest K-Stateteam in terms of average height since the 2008-09 season. K-Statefeatures five players 6’-1” or taller on the roster this season and11 of 15 are 5’-10” or taller. In 2012-13, head coach Deb Patterson fielded her shortestroster in terms of average height at 5’-9.75”. Since taking over theprogram in 1996-97, Patterson has fielded eight teams with an av-erage height of 5’-11” or taller with the top average of 5’-11.75”in the 2006-07 and 2008-09 seasons.

K-STATE IN SEASON OPENERS The Wildcats have been dominate in season-openers since theteam’s first season in 1968-69. Kansas State is 36-9 (.800) inopeners and have won 12 of the last 14 season openers. Headcoach Deb Patterson is 14-3 (.824) in season-openers since tak-ing the reins of the program in 1996.

K-STATE IN HOME OPENERS Kansas State has won 19 of its last 21 home openers in Bram-lage Coliseum. The Wildcats are 36-9 (.800) all-time in home open-ers and 21-4 (.840) in openers in Bramlage. Head coach DebPatterson is 15-2 (.882) in home openers since taking the reinsof the program in 1996.

REMEMBER, REMEMBER THE MONTH OF NOVEMBER In the 46th year of women’s basketball at K-State, the Wildcatshave accumulated a record of 110-41 (.728) in the month of No-vember. In the Patterson era, the Wildcats are 61-21 (.744) in the11th-month.

WILDCATS SECURE 250TH WIN IN BRAMLAGE K-State has enjoyed the friendly confines of Bramlage Coliseumin its 25th season of existence with a record of 263-100 (.725),including a 12-7 mark in 2012-13. The 12 home wins are the mostsince the 2006-07 season. The 19 home games are the most sincethe 2005-06 season (14-5). This marks the 13th time under head coach Deb Patterson andthe 25th time in the program’s 45-year history that K-State haswon 10 or more home games. The Wildcats secured their 250thwin in Bramlage Coliseum with a 65-45 victory over Texas on Feb.18, 2012.

CATS PROTECT THE HOUSE AGAINST NON-CON FOES In the 25th season of action inside Bramlage Coliseum, KansasState has protected its home floor with determination against non-conference foes with a record of 141-24 (.855) record. In the Deb Patterson era, the Wildcats have been even betterwith a record of 104-11 (.904).

HALFTIME LEAD = K-STATE ‘W’ SINCE 1999-00 Having the edge after the first 20 minutes of action has provento be prophetic since the 1999-00 season, as K-State is 239-39(.860) when leading at the break. The Wildcats were 17-5 this sea-son when leading at the half. Since the start of the 2007-08 season, K-State is 106-11 (.906)when leading with five minutes to play including an 18-2 record inthe 2012-13 season.

WILDCATS ON THE ROAD K-State has a 247-250 (.497) record in road games during theprogram’s 45-year history. During the 21st century, K-State ownsan 87-70 (.554) mark in road contests and are 104-104 (.5020during Deb Patterson’s 17 seasons on the K-State bench. K-State notched a 10-5 (.667) record on the road in 2008-09to break the previous school record of nine (1982-83 and 2001-02).

FILLING UP THE PURPLE PALACE K-State continued to be one of the nation’s leaders in atten-dance in 2012-13, as the Wildcats averaged 3,284 fans in 19 homegames which equates to 62,397 total fans. K-State ranked 32ndin the nation for average home attendance. Since the start of Deb Patterson’s tenure in the 1996-97 sea-son, K-State has seen 1,277,853 fans (avg.: 5,031 per game; 254games) pass through the turnstiles of Bramlage Coliseum. Whenthe crowd is 7,500 or more in Bramlage Coliseum during the Pat-terson-era, K-State is 40-10 (.800) including a record of 18-4when the crowd is 10,000 or more. K-State held four of its five opponents in the WNIT to 49-points or less and held five of its last seven opponents to 49 pointsor less. During the last 12 seasons, K-State is 80-3 (.964) whenholding an opponent to 49 points or less. In the Deb Patterson-era, K-State has held opponents to 30 points or less five times.

K-STATE SETS SCHOOL, BIG 12 RECORDS FROM DEEP Due to a lack of size in 2012-13, K-State attacked its opponentsfrom beyond the 3-point line. For the season, K-State was 325-of-1077 (.302) from beyond the arc. The 325 made 3-point field goalsare school and Big 12 records. The 2012-13 season is the ninthseason in the program’s history with 200 or more made 3-pointfield goals and is the first since the 2009-10 season. The 1077 attempts from beyond the arc were also school andBig 12 records. K-State is the first team in league history to attempt900 or more 3-point field goals in a season. K-State averaged 8.8 made 3-point field goals per game to leadthe Big 12 and rank fifth in the nation. In Big 12 games, K-Stateled the league with 9.4 three-point field goals made per game. TheWildcats made 5 or more 3-point field goals in a game 34 times,including a streak of 30 straight games. K-State made 10 or more3-point field goals in a game 14 times, which are the most gameswith 10 or more 3-point field goals made in a season in school his-tory. The Wildcats had five players with 10 or more made three-pointfield goals in 2012-13, including three with 60 or more (BrittanyChambers, 117; Haley Texada, 68; Bri Craig, 64). It was the thirdseason in the program’s history (2009-10 & 2002-03) that K-Statehad three players make 50 or more three-point field goals. In 2012-13, K-State scored 975 points on 3-point field goals or43.1 percent of its overall point total. This was the highest percent-age of K-State’s overall point total from 3-point field goals in schoolhistory. K-State has completed six seasons with a percentage of30-percent or higher. Against Oklahoma State on Jan. 23, K-State set the schoolrecord with a 16-of-41 (.390) performance from beyond the arc.The 16 made 3-point field goals set a school record, a BramlageColiseum record and tied for ninth in Big 12 history. The Wildcats set a school record against Baylor on Jan. 16 with44 three-point attempts, which is tied for second in Big 12 historyfor 3-point field goals attempted in a single game. K-State has 28games in the Deb Patterson-era with 30 or more 3-point field goalsattempted, including 18 in the 2012-13 season. K-State is 15-13in games when they attempt 30 or more 3-point field goals.

THREE IS NOT A CROWD, IT’S A BENEFIT The Wildcats have looked for three players to reach double fig-ures in scoring for the last three seasons and when this happens,K-State has been victorious more times than not with a 34-16(.680) mark, including a 9-8 record in 2012-13 and a 13-4 markin 2011-12. K-STATE’S GUARDS CONTINUE TO CRASH THE BOARDS Continuing a trend that developed under former K-State pointguard Megan Mahoney (2001-05), Kansas State’s guards continuedto attack the glass for rebounds in 2012-13. Against Utah on April3, the Wildcats received 22 (78.6 percent) of the team’s 28 re-bounds from its backcourt players. At the end of the 2012-13 sea-son, K-State’s guards pulled in 73.3 percent of K-State’s totalrebounds (910-of-1241) for an average of 24.6 per game. The Wild-cats were led by a guard on the glass in 31 games in the 2012-13season. The 24.6 rebounds per game by K-State guards shatteredthe school record of 18.3 set in the 2011-12 season. WILDCATS CONVERT TURNOVERS TO OFFENSE Kansas State was solid in the 2012-13 season in forcing its op-ponents into turnovers, forcing 575 turnovers (15.5 per game), with320 (8.6 spg) coming by way of K-State steals, which were the moststeals in the Deb Patterson era and the most since the 1988-89season (346). The Wildcats finished with a +1.4 turnover marginin the 2012-13 season, marking the fourth straight season K-Statehas tallied a positive turnover margin, and rank fifth in the Big 12in 2012-13. K-State opened the season by recording double figures in stealsin a school record 13 consecutive games, including a season-high18 steals against UNLV on Dec. 21. The 18 steals were the most bya K-State team since the Wildcats notched 23 against Western Illi-nois on Nov. 21, 2003. K-State tallied double digits in steals in 17games last season. The Wildcats had eight players with 10 or moresteals last season, with four players carding five or more steals ina game led by Mariah White’s season-high seven against OklahomaState on Jan. 23. K-State tallied 581 points off its opponents’ turnovers for an av-erage of 15.7 points per game on turnovers or 25.7 percent of K-State’s overall point production. K-State was 12-10 last seasonwhen holding the edge in points off turnovers, which includes a sea-son-high 33 points off 23 UCSB turnovers on Dec. 29.

TEXADA PROVIDES SPARK After playing just 14 games in her freshman season and aver-aging 1.0 points and 0.8 rebounds, sophomore Haley Texada madethe most of her 2012-13 season by carding career-highs in everystatisical category for both personal game- and season-highs. Texada scored in double figures in 22 of the 36 games sheplayed in last season, including a streak of five straight games toend the season. She concluded the season second on the team withan average of 11.8 points per game which ranks 19th in the Big 12in the category. She had 10 games last season with 15 or morepoints, which is also second on the team, including four games with20 or more and a career-high of 25 against Oklahoma on Feb. 6. Inleague play, Texada averaged 11.6 points per game, which ranked18th in the Big 12.

BRI FOR THREE Bri Craig was able to attack defenses from beyond the arc inher debut season in 2012-13. She ranked 10th in the Big 12 in 3-point field goals made per game (1.8) and was 64-of-229 (.279)from deep, including a career-high five made three-pointers atOklahoma State on Feb. 16. She was the fourth K-State freshmanto make 60 or more 3-point field goals in her debut season at K-State and the first since the 2009-10 season. She made two ormore 3-point field goals in a game 18 times, including seven gameswith four or more made 3-point field goals. Craig closed out her debut season by playing in 36 games andplaying 1,220 minutes to rank fourth in school history. The productof Lincoln, Neb., finished with an overall scoring average of 8.3points per game and a 9.2 average in Big 12 action. CARON DOWN THE STRETCH Providing the Wildcats with its only post option for the final 19games last season, senior Chantay Caron gave K-State a boost inscoring during seven of the final 10 games. Caron tallied four consecutive games in double figures for thefirst time in her career with 11 points at West Virginia and at Baylorand 10 points against Texas Tech and Texas. She registered a ca-reer-high 19 points against Illinois in the WNIT quarterfinals. Shealso added 11 points against Utah in the WNIT semifinals. The Lawrence, Kan., native was also solid on the boards duringthe WNIT for K-State, as she averaged 6.0 rebounds in the fivegames including a career-high 10 rebounds against Ball State onMarch 28. For the 2012-13 season, Caron averaged career-highs of 6.7

points and 4.1 rebounds. She also notched career-highs of 38 as-sists, 38 steals, 26 made 3-point field goals, a team-leading 22blocked shots and a career-best 1,094 minutes (29.6 mpg). Sheregistered double digits in scoring a career-high nine times lastseason.

BUSY SUMMER FOR ROMERO Freshman guard Leticia Romero stepped on the K-State cam-pus on Aug. 29 for the first time after a full summer of internationalcompetition for a pair of Spanish national teams. Romero startedher summer in June with the Spanish U19 national team at the2013 FIBA U19 World Championships for Women in Ukraine. Shehelped the squad to a fourth place finish as she tallied 12.1 pointson a .494 field goal percentage and a free throw percentage of .870.She also notched 4.3 assists, 3.3 rebounds and 2.7 steals. Sheranked second in the tournament in steals and fourth in assists. The product of Las Palmas, Spain, then played for the SpanishU18 national team at the 2013 FIBA U18 European Championshipsfor women in Croatia in August. Romero led the team to a goldmedal while earning tournament MVP honors and all-tournamentteam honors. She averaged 13.1 points, 5.1 rebounds, 3.6 assistsand 2.7 steals during the tournament. Ironically, while Romero wasin training camp with the Spanish U18 team, her team was justone hour away from the K-State team she has joined while bothteams were in Italy.
