YOU WANT OFFENSE...WE GOT OFFENSEThe Spartans are scoring at a 94.3 points per game clip so far this season, which is the sixth highest scoring average in the nation. San José State has scored at least 80 points in each of its first four games and leads the Mountain West in point production. Against Columbia (11/16) the team set a program and conference record for points in a game, when they dropped 119 on the Lions.

CAN YOU HANDLE PRESSUREIt’s only four games, but the Spartans showed an inkling of what their pressure defense is capable of this year. SJSU has forced its opponents to turn the ball over 120 times and in those, made 62 steals. San José State made those opponent miscues pay off to the tune of a 135-44 advantage in points off turnovers. Nationally, the team ranks third in turnover margin at +16 and 12th in steals per game grabbing 14.8 per game.

GAME TIMES SET FOR CAL CLASSICThe Cal Bears and Spartans will play the opening game of the Cal Classic on November 28 and tip off time is now set for 5:30 p.m. in Haas Pavilion.

If San José State wins that game they will play for the championship on Saturday, November 29 at 7:00 p. m., against the winner of a game between Cincinnati and Creighton. If the Spartans lose to Cal, they would play the consolation game on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. against the loser of Cincinnati vs. Creighton.

THREES ARE THE NAME OF THE GAMESan José State is hitting an average of nine 3-point field goals per game, which ranks 17th in the nation, but taking and hitting three is nothing new under second-year head coach Jamie Craighead.

With 245 made 3-pointers and 793 attempts, the 2013-14 Spartans shattered the program’s previ-ous marks in each category. The previous record of 146 3-pointers in the 27 games (1999-00) was equaled in just 20 games (at UNLV 1/29) last season. In addition, they passed the previous record for attempts in a season (493 in 29 games in 2000-01) in that same game.

Both marks set Mountain West Conference records as well. Fresno State held the single-season and conference season records.

WOODBERRY PICK UP RIGHT WHERE SHE LEFT OFF IN 2013-14 Rebecca Woodberry (Sr., F, Phoenix, Ariz.) finished the 2013-14 season as the 13th best 3-point shooter in the nation (3.1/g). Through four games of 2014-15 she is right on her pace from last year (3.0/g) and ranked 37th in the nation. She has scored in double figures in three of four games this year, including a 30-point outburst at Utah (11/14) to open the campaign.

The single-season record holder for 3-pointers (90 in 2013-14), Woodberry became the seventh player in program history to reach 100 made threes when she drained four at UC Riverside (11/20). She has made 102 3-pointers in 33-career games at San José State.

SCOUTING CALIFORNIAThe Bears are ranked No. 14 in the latest USA Today top-25 poll, and come into their match up with the San José State with a 4-0 record after an 82-70 win over Missouri in the championship game of the Rainbow Wahine Classic. California is under the direction of fourth-year head coach Lindsay Gottlieb. She brought a 79-24 record at Cal into the season and an overall record of 135-63 in six seasons as a Division I head coach.

The Bears have four players averaging double figures in the scoring column. They are led by a pair of forwards, senior Reshanda Gray (19.3 ppg., 6.0 reb.) and freshman Mikayla Cowling (16.0 ppg., 5.8 reb.). Courtney Range, a sophomore forward, is the team’s leading rebounder at 9.3 per game and senior guard Brittany Boyd tops the squad with 8.3 assists per outing.

Cal holds the advantage in the all-time series 23-9. In games contested in Berkeley, the Spar-tans are just 3-13, but shocked the Bears with a 68-66 win in 2009-10, their last foray into Haas Pavilion.

SCOUTING CINCINNATIThe Bearcats come into the Cal Classic with a 1-2 record after a 85-54 loss at Iowa State last week. Cincinnati is under the direction of six-year head coach Jamelle Elliott. She brought a 62-90 career record into the season, all at Cincinnati.

The Bearcats have three players averaging double figures. The are led by junior guard Jasmine Whitfield (16.0 ppg., 8.3 reb.) and sophomore forward Marley Hill (14.7 ppg.), who also paces the team in rebounding (9.0/g). Ana Owens, a freshman guard, tops the squad with 4.7 assists per contest.

If the teams face off on Saturday, it will be the first time they have met.

SCOUTING CREIGHTONThe Bluejays come into the Cal Classic with a 2-2 record after a 96-60 loss at UConn last week. Creighton is under the direction of 13th-year head coach Jim Flanery. He brought a 235-151 career record into the season, all at Creighton.

The Bluejays have two players averaging double figures. The are led by junior guard Marissa Jan-ning (17.3 ppg., 3.3 reb.) and senior forward Alexis Akin-Otiko (10.3 ppg.), who also paces the team in rebounding (5.3/g). Sophomore guard MC McGrory tops the squad with 3.3 assists per outing.

If the teams face off on Saturday, it will be the first time they have met.

RECORDS GALORE FALL IN WIN OVER COLUMBIAThe Spartans set several records in 119-76 win over Columbia (11/16), mostly notably the 119 points. That’s both a team and Mountain West record. The previous team high was 103, which they clearly shattered. That had been achieved twice: in a 103-69 win over San Francisco State on Dec. 5, 1980, and a 103-80 win over Utah State on Jan. 12, 2013.

The Spartans also set school records with 42 free throws made and 53 free throw attempts. The teams combined for 69 made free throws, which is a Mountain West record. San Jose State’s 89 field goal attempts and 53 free throw attempts are No. 2 in Mountain West history. Finally, the combined 195 points, the Spartans’ 119 points and the free throws made and attempted totals are Event Center records and the field goals (35) and field goal attempts tied Event Center records....Whew!

COLUMBIA WAS A TEAM EFFORTIn the Spartans 119-76 win over Columbia, every player made a contribution to record setting performance. All 11 players were represented in the scoring column, led by Jasmine Smith (So., F, Burbank, Calif.) who scored 23 points. Ten grabbed a rebound with Myzhanique Ladd (Fr., G, Seattle, Wash.) and Paris Baird (So., F, Van Nuys, Calif.) paced the team with six each. Ten players dished out an assist with Aniya Baker (So., G, Perris, Calif.) toping the team with five and 10 players had steals with Smith leading the way with five. Oh, and every player sank at least one free throw. Nine of the 11 made more than one free throw and of those, none shots less than .625 from the charity stripe.

CUNNIGAN GLIDES PAST 1,500 CAREER POINTSEntering the 2014-15 season,Ta’Rea Cunnigan (Sr., G, Winchester, Calif.) stood at 1,495 career points. With an 18 point performance at Utah (11/14), she became the fourth player in San José State women’s basketball history to pass that milestone. Cunnigan has scored 1,523 points in just 92 games. Her next milestone comes at 1,666 points, when she reaches Elinor Banks (1978-81) for third place on the program’s all-time scoring list.

WHAT A HALF OF HOOPSSan José State is competing in its 41st season of women’s college basketball. In the second half of the game against Columbia the Spartans scored 64 points and launched 50 shots. Both are records San José State records for a half of basketball.

11IN...11 CONTRIBUTEAll 11 Spartans who were available to play, have seen action in both games this year. Nine played double digit minutes at Utah (11/14) and 10 did against Columbia (11/16) as Coach Craighead kept a steady rotation of fresh players coming into the game to keep the intensity at a constantly high pace. Every Spartan made a positive impact on the stat sheet, including four who scored in double figures, led by a career-high 30 points from Rebecca Woodberry (Sr., F, Phoenix, Ariz.).

IMPRESSIVE DEBUTSMyzhanique Ladd (Fr., G, Seattle, Wash.) and Aniya Baker (So., PG, Perris, Calif.) were impressive in their Spartan debuts. Ladd was 8-for-8 from the line and scored 15 points as well as played important minutes in crunch time at Utah (11/14). Baker also scored 15 points, including three 3-pointers, she dished out a team-high three assists and contributed two steals all while taking care of the ball handling duties.

WOODBERRY IS READYAt Utah (11/14), Rebecca Woodberry (Sr., F, Phoenix, Ariz.) served notice that she is ready for the 2014-15 season. She opened the campaign with a career-high 30 point outburst at Utah (11/14). She led the team in scoring, rebounds (8) and steals (4). The nation’s 13th leading 3-point shooter in 2013-14 (3.10/g) drained five-of-seven treys and hit 9-of-11 free throws.WINS IN THE HOME OPENER NOT EVEN A 50-50 PROPOSITIONIn home openers since the 1977-78 season the Spartans are just 17-19. However, they have won their last two home openers, both against San Francisco State . Before this current streak, the last win in a home opener came in the 2005-06 season.

CUNNIGAN NAMED PRESEASON ALL-CONFERENCE BY MOUNTAIN WEST COACHESTa’Rea Cunnigan (Sr., G, Winchester, Calif.) is one of five players to be named the Mountain West Preseason All-Conference team by a vote of the conference’s head coaches. This is the second straight year Cunnigan has received the honor.

Cunnigan, averaged 18.4 points per game last year and is the leading scorer among all returning players in the Mountain West Conference this year. She led the team in scoring and steals and ranked second in blocks, assists, free throw percentage and 3-point percentage.

She was the second leading scorer in the Mountain West Conference last year and earned honorable mention All-Mountain West honors after the season.

SEASON OPENERS A 50-50 PROPOSITIONSan José State has played 39 season openers and has split them right down the center - 20 wins and 19 losses. Only three of seven head coaches, Sharon Chatman (in 1976-77),Tina Krah (in 1986-87), and Jamie Craighead (in 2013-14) have begun their Spartans career with a win in their first game. gram (1977-86), the most in Spartans history. The late Janice Richard won six of her seven season openers as the Spartans head coach (1999-2006).

ROAD OPENING WINS HARD TO COME BYIn the last 10 years, the Spartans are just 2-8 in their first game on the road. The team defeated Santa Clara 97-93 last year, but have to go back to 2004-05 and a 54-52 win at UC Irvine for their last win in the team’s first road game.

SINGLE-SEASON MARKS FELL IN 2013-14 SCORING MARK SETThe 2013-14 San José State women’s basketball set the program’s single-season record for points at 2,308. They eclipsed the previous record, 2,301 points, which was set in 1979-80.

CUNNIGAN ENTERS HER SENIOR SEASON FOURTH ON ALL-TIME SCORING LISTTa’Rea Cunnigan (Sr., G, Winchester, Calif.) has scored 1,495 career points and is in 4th place on the Spartans career-scoring list. On a layup with 1:49 to play in the first half at Air Force (2/12), she moved ahead Hulett Brooks (1990, 92-94 1,373 pts.) for the fourth spot on the list. On her first bucket against NEV (2/19), she become just fourth player in the Spartans’ 38-year history to reach the 1,400-point plateau.

Cunnigan was the 13th player to reach the 1,000-point plateau in the game against UC Riverside (11/15). She accomplished the feat in 63 games, the second fastest in program history.

MILESTONES DEAD AHEADTa’Rea Cunnigan (Sr., G, Winchester, Calif.) begins 2014-15, 265 points from tying Karen Mason for the program’s all-time scoring record, 1,760, and then is just seven points for the school’s career scoring leader (male or female), Ricky Berry who finished his Spartans’ career with 1,767 points.

IF THEY’VE GOT THE THREE THEY’LL TAKE ITWhen the Spartans launched 42 3-pointers at San Diego State (1/25), they set a San José State single game and a Mountain West Conference record. They broke the program’s previous record of 36, which was set against USF (11/20/14) and the previous MW record of 41 set by Wyoming at Colorado State (1/28/05).

San José State had four of the top six 3-point shooting games in the MW last year and four of the top five in conference games.

CUNNIGAN IN TOP-10 OF SEVEN MORE CAREER CATEGORIESThe fourth-leading scorer in program history, Ta’Rea Cunnigan (Sr., G, Winchester, Calif.) is also in the top-10 of seven other San José State career categories.

She ranks 2nd in both free throws (425) and free throw attempts (576), trailing only Cricket Wil-liams (2001-04) in both categories. Cunnigan is 41 free throws and 156 free throw attempts from tying Williams in each category.

She ranks 5th in career free throw percentage (.738) and steals (204). She is 22 steals from tying Kari Steele (1994-97) for fourth place on the program’s all-time steals list.

In San José State history, Cunnigan ranks 7th in 3-point attempts (337) and 6th in makes (104). She is 10 3-pointers from tying Cricket Williams (2001-04) for 5th place in career makes.

Lastly she checks in 8th place for field goals made (483) and in attempts (1,253).

WOODBERRY SET 3-POINT SHOOTING MARKSIn 2013-14, her first season as a Spartan, Rebecca Woodberry (Sr., F, Phoenix, Ariz.) set numerous 3-point shooting record for both the team and the Mountain West Conference.

Woodberry shattered the program records for 3-point attempts with 251 and 3-pointers made with 90. The previous record for attempts belonged to Jessica Kellogg who put up 212 treys in the 2002-03 season. The 3-point field goals made record had belonged to Kari Steele who in the 1996-97 season made 74.

Her 46 made 3-pointers in Mountain West play are a conference record for a junior and the fourth most by any player in conference history. She also set the record for most 3-point attempts with 138 in conference action.

With her 2013-14 season, she moved into the top-10 of both the career 3-pointers made and 3-pointers attempted for San José State women’s basketball.

JAMES ENDS COLLEGIATE CAREERAlways a battler, Classye James (Sr., G, Palo Alto, Calif.) has fought through injuries throughout her college career. After failing to respond to offseason surgery, James decided, prior to the 2014-15, season to end her career. “Classye has been a great Spartans whose career is being cut short due to injuries,” head coach Jamie Craighead said. “She will graduate on December and we wish her well as she starts the next chapter in her life.”

PAC-12 IS NO PICNICSince the 2008-09 season the Spartans played Pac-12 schools five times. In those contests San José State is just 1-4. The lone win came in the 2009-10 season when they traveled to Berkeley and defeated California 68-66.

Head CoachJamie Craighead

Oregon (2002)Second Year

On September 16, 2013, Jamie Craighead, who coaches an up-tempo offense and stifling defense, was named the eighth head women’s basketball coach at San José State University.

Craighead came to San José State after spending four seasons at Sacramento State (2010-to-2013), where she was the winningest women’s head basketball coach in 20 years and the only coach to post a winning conference record at Sacramento State since they entered the Big Sky Conference in the 1996-97 season. Under her guidance the Hornets reached the Big Sky Conference Tournament for just the fifth (2012) and sixth (2013) times in program history. In those appearances, Sacramento State earned its first tournament wins and reached the semi-final round both years.

The youngest head coach in Division I when she took over the Hornets, Craighead’s teams, playing a fast-break type offense, led the Big Sky Conference in scoring in each of her four seasons.

Sacramento State set several program records in 2012-13 including field goals made, assists, blocked shots and fewest turnovers committed. In addition, the team’s 19 wins equaled the program’s single-season record, which was set in the 1990-91 season. The Hornets led the Big Sky in points, 3-pointers, and assists and on the defensive end, topped the league in steals and blocks.

Also in 2012-13, Craighead coached Kylie Kuhns and Megan Kritscher, two of the top post players in the Big Sky Conference. Kuhns, at only six feet tall, broke the school and Big Sky career rebounding records during the year, while also leading the team in scoring. For her efforts, Kuhns earned All-Big Sky first-team honors. Kritscher shattered the Big Sky single-season blocks record and ranked fourth in the NCAA in blocks per game for the season.

In four seasons, nine of her players garnered All-Big Sky honors. She coached 2011-12 Big Sky Freshman of the Year Fantasia Hilliard, and 23 of her athletes received Aca-demic All-Big Sky Conference honors for their work in the classroom.

Prior to accepting the top job at Sacramento State, Craighead spent the 2007-08 season as an assistant for the Hornets before being promoted to Associate Head Coach the following year.

Craighead started her coaching career in 2002 under two-time NCAA Division II Coach of the Year Gordy Presnell at Seattle Pacific University. In her three years at SPU, the team posted an 89-5 record, won three PacWest Conference titles, qualified for the NCAA Division II Tournament each year and reached the championship game in 2005. After her success in Seattle, she spent two seasons as an assistant at Portland State University before taking a position at Sacramento State.

As a collegiate player at the University of Oregon, Craighead led the Ducks to the 2002 WNIT championship after three appearances in the NCAA Tournament. When she finished her career, her 182 3-point field goals made ranked second all-time in Ducks history.

Craighead earned honorable mention Academic All-Pac-10 honors as a senior and graduated from Oregon with a bachelor’s degree in educational studies in 2002.
