G Rashad Smith had 21 points to lead five Tulsa players in double figures. Tulsa registered its 20th straight win against conference opponents. SMU won its eighth straight game, pulling away from UCF, 75-56, to move to 18-4 overall and 9-1 in The American. G Nic Moore had eight points and 10 assists, while G Ryan Manuel had 20 points and F Markus Kennedy tallied 13 points and 11 rebounds. G Adonys Henriquez scored a game-high 22 points to lead UCF. One Shining MomentUConn capped the first season of American Athletic Conference play by winning the 2014 NCAA Champion-ship. The Huskies beat Kentucky 60-54 in the NCAA final to win their fourth national title since 1999.

When It CountsAmerican Athletic Conference teams were a combined 13-4 in postseason play in 2013-14, turning in a .765 win-ning percentage that was the best of any conference. The American went 9-3 in the NCAA tournament (.750), trailing only the SEC (12-3, .800).

The Champ Is HereThe 2014-15 season is the second straight year in which the American Athletic Conference has the previous season’s NCAA champion in its ranks.

Fab FourThe American Athletic Conference placed four teams into the 2014 NCAA Championship in its first season. Cincinnati, UConn, Louisville and Memphis were se-lected to the 68-team field.

Lucky SevenSeven teams that are in the American Athletic Con-ference in 2014-15 played in the 2014 postseason. Cincinnati, UConn, Memphis and Tulsa played in the NCAA tournament, SMU advanced to the NIT final at Madison Square Garden. Tulane was in the CBI, while East Carolina was in the CIT.

Final FourUConn reached the NCAA Final Four for the third time in six years and for the fifth time overall. The Huskies are a combined 8-1 all-time in the Final Four, including national titles in 1994, 2004, 2011 and 2014.

Four Is FifthUConn’s four NCAA titles rank fifth in NCAA Division I history. UCLA has won 11 national championships, followed by Kentucky with eight. Indiana and North Carolina are tied with five each, while UConn and Duke have both won four titles.

On A RollUConn’s four NCAA titles have all come since the 1998-99 season. In that 16-year span, only three schools have won as many as two national titles (Duke, Florida, North Carolina).

Triple DoubleThe only American Athletic Conference team that returns three double-digit scorers from last year is Tulane. G Louis Dabney averaged 15.2 ppg, G Jonathan Stark had 14.5 ppg, and G Jay Hook averaged 13.9 ppg.

FixturesCincinnati has made four consecutive NCAA tourna-ment appearances.

Coaching TreeThe American Athletic Conference introduces three head coaches in their first years at their respective schools. Kelvin Sampson —the former Oklahoma and Indiana coach — takes over at Houston, while former Missouri and Miami (Fla.) head man Frank Haith is the new head coach at Tulsa. USF is led by Orlando Antigua, the former Kentucky and Pittsburgh assistant.

The Champs Are HereCincinnati and Tulsa enter the 2014-15 season as sitting conference champions. The Bearcats tied for the inaugural American Athletic Conference regular-season title, while the Golden Hurricane tied for the Conference USA crown in the regular season before taking the tournament title.

Weekly AwardsThe American names a Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week each Monday morning during the season. Winners are chosen from nominations provided by con-ference sports information directors. The information will be available from the conference office via release as well as on the league web site.

Annual AwardsThe American Athletic Conference will name all-conference teams and individual honors for the league’s Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, Coach of the Year, Most Improved Player, Rookie of the Year, Sixth Man Award and Sportsmanship Award . The awards are chosen by a vote of the league’s 11 head coaches at the conclusion of the regular season and will be announced in conjunction with the conference tournament.

The American Athletic Conference All-Academic Team is comprised of players who have an overall grade-point average of 3.00 or better over the previous academic year and completed at least two semesters of academic work. Basketball honorees are announced in the summer.

The American Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year was established to recog-nize student-athletes who have achieved success in the classroom and on the field. The winner receives a scholarship which may be applied to graduate or professional studies.

Championship CredentialsMedia members who plan to cover the American Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Championship in Hartford, Connecticut, may apply for credentials online, beginning in January. Notification of credential approval will be made via email.
