All-HORIZON LEAGUE PRESEASON HON-ORS:Two-time All-Horizon League recipientLaShonda Grant was named to the 2006-07 Preseason All-Horizon League First Team. Grant averaged a team-high 15.1 points per game last season.

NATIONALLY RANKED:After the conclusion of the 2005-06 season, the Flames ranked nationally in two catego-ries. UIC ranked 30th, averaging 16.2 assists per game and 15th in steals (11.3 spg).

VETERAN SQUAD: This year’s UIC women’s basketball team in-cludes four returning starters, a solid bench and four talented newcomers. Although the Flames lost stellar performer Chrissy Dizon, UIC has fi ve seniors to help guide the team to another crack at the Horizon League Tour-nament title game in March of 2007.

ADDITIONS:Two rookie guards and a center added to UIC’s solid nucleus in 2006-07. Guard Briana Hinkle helped her team to two conference and district championships while averag-ing 16.7 points, 6.3 rebounds and 4.3 steals per game her senior year. Jessie Miller joins Hinkle in the backcourt after averaging 16.2 points and 5.2 rebounds per game, while helping her team to a state championship appearance. Cassie Johnson, a 6-foot-2 cen-ter, averaged 14.9 points and 12.0 rebounds per game her senior year.

1,000-POINT CLUB:Last season, Chrissy Dizon reached the 1,000-point mark, the tenth player in school history to reach the plateau. This season, seniors LaShonda Grant and Krystal Huglier are well on their way to 1,000 career points. Grant is 43 points shy of 1,000, while Hu-gleier needs 175 to join the exclusive club.

DOWN THE STRETCH:UIC came barreling down the stretch last year, winning nine of its last 12 outings. year, winning nine of its last 12 outings. yearDuring that stretch, the Flames averaged 71 points per game and shot 40 percent from the fi eld, while totaling 120 steals. In the Horizon League Tournament, UIC continued to roll, downing Wright State and UW-Green Bay en route to its fi rst-ever title game ap-pearance.

ON HER WAY:After just four short seasons, Lisa Ryckbosch is already UIC’s second all-time winningest coach with 59 career victories. Ryckboschtrails Eileen McMahon, who totaled 89 wins in eight seasons. Ryckbosch also already owns the Flames’ second-best all-time win-ning percentage (.513).

OFF THE BENCH: The 2006-07 squad features seven reserves, including fi ve players that made appear-ances in 18 or more games. Coming off the bench last season, senior Jacquay Holmes fi nished fourth on the team in scoring (8.8 ppg) and earned a starting spot in eight of UIC’s last ten contests. The forward averaged 12.5 points per game in those eight outings, while totaling 26 rebounds.

HORIZON LEAGUE NETWORK:The Horizon League, in partnership with CSTV Networks Inc., announced on Oct. 23 the upcoming launch of the Horizon League Network (HLN) as the premier broad-band destination for free, live video of League games and other video-on-demand features highlighting the League’s teams and student-athletes.

An extension of a venture that produced more than 150 events last year, the Horizon League Network is a comprehensive conference-wide broadband initiative designed to provide coverage of member institutions’ athletic programs to fans, parents, alumni, boosters, current and prospective student-athletes, the general public and the media with quality live game web casts and other compelling video on-demand programming.

The Horizon League Network is the centerpiece of the League’s newly re-designed web site located at www.horizonleague.org, which launched Tuesday, Oct. 24. All games will be accessed directly from the HLN video player on the home page. For more information about the HLN Network, please visit www.horizonleague.org.

HEAD COACH LISA RYCKBOSCH:There seem to be a few common traits that tie together those people who call themselves Chicagoans: a blue-collar work ethic, a famil oriented attitude and a passion for the city’s sports teams. It’s these traits that have made Chicago a destination for people looking for a new place to call home. And it’s these same traits that are the reason why many Chicago natives never want to leave.

For UIC head women’s basketball coach Lisa Ryckbosch, who was born in this city, grew up in this city and has over 18 years of basket-ball coaching experience in this city, Chicago has always been “her kind of town.”

The UIC women’s basketball program has been the benefactor of Ryckbosch’s hometown tutelage, as the Flames have made huge strides as a program under her direction since she was hired on April 25, 2002.

In just four short years, Ryckbosch is already UIC’s second all-time winningest coach with 59 victories, while guiding the Flames to their highest-ever league regular-season fi nish (second, 2003), their fi rst-ever appearance in the Horizon League Tournament title game (2006) and their fi rst-ever vote in the Associated Press Top 25 poll (Nov. 2002).

She has developed 11 all-league performers during her tenure with those players helping the Flames set single-season team records in both three-pointers made (200, ’05–06) and steals (344, ’02–03). Ryckbosch has built UIC into a successful program by attracting top student-athletes. Her extensive knowledge of the Windy City has allowed her to lay down the recruiting groundwork to keep the top recruits from the talent-rich Chicagoland area close to home.

The 2006–07 roster contains ten Illinois players, three freshmen from Ohio and Minnesota, and one Missouri native. Coming off their fi rst-ever trip to the Horizon League title game, the Flames return four start-ers and 10 of 11 letterwinners that will guide the 2006–07 squad.

“This team is dominated by veterans who have played many minutes for our program,” Ryckbosch said. “They understand what needs to be done, and they are ready to do it this season.”

Ryckbosch enjoyed a great start to her UIC head coaching career as the Flames posted 17 wins in 2002–03, the second-most in school history and the most victories since the 1995–96 campaign. The team also tied the school record for Horizon League wins with 11 during her rookie campaign, on the way to the Flames’ fi rst-ever second-place conference fi nish in 2002–03.

Ryckbosch came to UIC after spending 11 seasons on the coaching staff at DePaul University, where she served most recently as associate head coach under Doug Bruno. She had been instrumental in bringing top Chicagoland and national talent to the Blue Demons’ successful women’s basketball program, includ-ing fi ve players who competed in the WNBA.

While at DePaul, Ryckbosch helped guide the Blue Demons to fi ve NCAA Tournament appearances and three WNIT berths. DePaul owned a record of 186-140 during her tenure, while winning a pair of Great Midwest Conference titles (1989, 1991) and the fi rst-ever Conference USA regularseason championship in 1996.

Prior to her stint with the Blue Demons, Ryckbosch, ironically, got her collegiate coaching start as a mem-ber of the UIC staff in 1990–91, serving under then-head coach Eileen McMahon. Ryckbosch began her coaching career at Hillcrest High School in Country Club Hills, Ill., where she served as the head girls’ varsity basketball coach and math teacher for three years.

Ryckbosch enjoyed a standout collegiate career at Loyola (Ill.). She was a four-year starter and two-time team captain for the Ramblers from 1980–84 and still ranks sixth on the school’s all-time scoring chart (1,296) and third in rebounding (765). In 2005–06, Lisa Ryckbosch was recognized for her outstanding ath-letic performance at Loyola when she was named to the Hall of Fame. She played an instrumental role in leading Loyola to a school-record 23 wins and the inaugural North Star Championship—now the Horizon League—in 1984.

Ryckbosch is married with two children. Her husband, Bart, a native of Belgium, is the archivist at the Art Institute of Chicago. Ryckbosch’s oldest son, Steven, is a 17-year-old senior at St. Ignatius College Prep, while Peter is an 12-year-old seventh grader. The Ryckbosch family makes its residence in the Old Irving neighborhood on Chicago’s northside.
