Build BackgroundHelp students use their knowledge of fantasy to visualize the story. Build interest by asking a question such as the following: ¿Vieron alguna vez un manatí en un documental en televisión? Read the title and author and talk about the cover illustration. Explain that the story takes place in the Florida Everglades, which is a manatee habitat. Ask students what they might expect to fi nd in a fantasy about a princess and a manatee.

Introduce the TextGuide students through the text, noting important ideas, and helping with unfamiliar language and vocabulary so they can read the text successfully. Here are some suggestions:

Pages 2–3: Have students look at the illustrations. Explain that Su Mumi loves animals, especially manatees.

Pages 6–7: Explain that the young prince Tucure (“Tu-kíu-rai”) also loves to play with animals, but an old woman poisons him so he will be as miserable as she is.

Page 8: Tucure’s parents tell him he must search for a princess to recover.

ReadHave students read silently while you listen to individual students read aloud. Support their understanding of the text as needed.

Remind students to use the Monitor/Clarify Strategy and to think of parts of the text that they might not understand.

Discuss and Revisit the TextPersonal ResponseInvite students to share their personal responses to the book.

Ways of ThinkingAs you discuss the text, help students understand these points:

Thinking Within the Text Thinking Beyond the Text Thinking About the Text

• Su Mumi is the only person the manatee trust.

• The old woman curses Tucure because she is jealous of his happiness.

• Tucure and Su Mumi fall in love and work together to help save the manatee from hunters.

• People can come together to help protect something they believe in.

• People should not give up on fi nding what they are looking for.

• The colorful illustrations help the reader visualize the events of the text.

• The dialogue between animals and people make the story fantastical.

• The characters’ moods and feelings make the reader empathize with their situations.

Choices for Further Support• Fluency Invite students to work in pairs and choose two pages from the text to read

aloud. Remind them to pay attention to punctuation, to read dialogue with expression, and to modulate their voices in response to foreshadowing in the text.

• Comprehension Based on your observations of the students’ reading and discussion, revisit parts of the text to clarify or extend comprehension. Remind students to go back to the text to support their ideas.

• Phonics/Word Work Provide practice as needed with words and word parts, using examples from the text. Explain that the word radiación on the top of page 12 has the root radio. Related words include irradiar, radiador, radial.

Writing about ReadingCritical ThinkingHave students complete the Razonamiento crítico questions on Hoja reproducible 15.8.

RespondingHave students complete the activities at the back of the book, using their Cuaderno del lector. Use the instruction below as needed to reinforce or extend understanding of the comprehension skill.

Target Comprehension SkillMain Ideas and Details

Target Comprehension Skill Remind students that the main idea is the most

important idea in the story and it is supported with details that tell more about it. Model how to add details to the Graphic Organizer, using a “Think Aloud” like the one below:

Think Aloud

Practice the SkillEncourage students to share other examples from the story of details that support the main idea that Su Mumi and Tucure both love animals.

Writing Prompt: Thinking About the TextHave students write a response to the prompt on page 6. Remind them that when they think about the text, they refl ect back on the text. They should notice and evaluate language, genre, literary devices, and how the text is organized.

Assessment Prompts• In the fi rst paragraph on page 3, what does the word despacio mean?

• One idea present on page 14 is that ______________________________.

• What will most likely happen to Su Mumi and Tucure? Why do you think that?

Razonamiento críticoLee y contesta las preguntas.
