As the weather turned colder and outdoor activities became less feasible, we brought out the chess boards at the Center. The resident chess enthusiast, our PEACE coordinator Alex, began teaching our boys and girls the basics of the game. Many of our students showed interest and they have been playing a few times a week. Some have become proficient very quickly, in particular, our student Isaac, a junior at NBHS. He has beaten all challengers, including the staff. We always encourage our participants to do better than us, but we didn’t expect it to happen so soon!

It has been fun watching the students enjoying the game so much, but it’s even better to see how the game benefits them. Chess is a fun game that builds camaraderie amongst our students and staff, but it is also beneficial for many other reasons. Chess is widely known as a thinking person’s game and it is true: chess promotes brain growth by stimulating both sides of the brain. Chess helps unleash creativity, increase problem-solving skills, and it teaches planning and foresight. Playing chess requires strategic and critical thinking, so it can help teenagers make better decisions in all areas of life. Several studies have even shown that it can raise a person’s IQ and improve their memory. Now that some students have been playing for a while, and becoming better with each match, there is a clear boost in their self esteem. The benefits are readily apparent.

Chess is truly a remarkable game. As the students continue to practice and learn, we are preparing for a Pathways chess tournament. The younger, less experienced boys and girls will compete against each other, while the older, more advanced players will face off. They are all looking forward to showing off their skills! We will even set up a few chess boards at our table during the upcoming city-wide Anti-Violence Rally to encourage more people to take up the game. We are confident that our students can compete with the best in the city!

The year is flying by! We have had a wonderful school year so far and we are looking forward to the months ahead. The past months have been successful and exciting as always; every day the Center is overflowing with youthful enthusiasm. Our participants continue to strive for excellence in and out of the classroom, strengthening their bonds to each other, to the Center, and to the bright future they all have in front of them.

As the state faces another enormous budget deficit, there is some uncertainty in regards to state funding for our agency. We know that the work we do is important, meaningful, and valuable to society as a whole. Every teen pregnancy prevented impacts families, New Britain, and Connecticut tremendously. We have been through these times of uncertainty before and have always persevered, becoming a stronger and more effective organization because of it. We expect this time to be no different because of our undisputed 23 years of documented success. We continue to make a difference in the lives of our children and plan on doing that for years to come. Whatever fluctuations in the state budget occur we know that we are and will continue to be stable for our participants and the families of New Britain.

The need for our program in New Britain is greater now more than ever. Recently the CT Department of Public Health released updated statistics about the teen pregnancy rates throughout Connecticut communities. New Britain used to be double the state average of births to teens, but sadly that has increased dramatically. In CT there are approximately 11 births for every 1,000 females ages 15-19. However, in New Britain, that rate has almost quadrupled the state average, at 43 births for every 1000 females ages 15-19. These statistics are scary, and clearly demonstrate the immediate

need for a program like Pathways/Senderos to continue our vital work in New Britain curbing teen births amongst the population of students we serve. As a community, we need to look at the reality of the increased teen birth rate and get serious about dealing with it by funding prevention programs that are proven to delay pregnancy and help students better themselves, not only in school, but more importantly, in life. Pathways/Senderos has documented success achieving this goal for over 23 years in New Britain.

We are proud of our program. We are proud of our students. We are proud of our documented success. We continue to create a family environment for the neediest children and strive to be a fixture in New Britain for years to come. We are thankful for our supporters and urge every one of you to discuss our program with someone who may not know about us. Tell your friends and family, far and wide, that there is a program in New Britain doing wonderful things for children, helping them become better students and better citizens, all while remaining pregnancy free. We ask you all to be advocates for Pathways/Senderos because you understand the vital, important work we are doing in New Britain and how impactful it is on our students and our community. We appreciate the opportunity we have had to help shape the future for so many youth over our 23 years, and we look forward to helping many more youth for generations to come.

The family atmosphere that we have created over the past two decades at the Pathways/Senderos Center is readily apparent during the holiday season. The meals, family gatherings, parties, school vacation, and of course, the gifts, make that time of year our children’s favorite.

The holiday season begins at Pathways with our Thanksgiving Meal Distribution on the Monday before Thanksgiving. Foodshare and our friends and supporters throughout the community, including Papa’s Dodge and Altrusa International, Inc. of Greater Hartford, provide us with enough turkeys, side dishes, desserts, and juice for all our participants’ families. It is always a pleasure to see our participants’ parents (and often, their siblings) when they come to the Center. They are all very appreciative when they leave with bags of fresh veggies, a giant bird, and enough canned goods and desserts for the entire family!

A few weeks after Thanksgiving, we host our annual Holiday Party at St. John’s Church on Arch Street. Every year, the party seems to get bigger. All of our students enjoy the festivities with their parents and other family members. Parents bring beverages and food, mostly homemade dishes, and our staff, board members, and volunteers all help to serve dinner. The variety of food is incredible! When we are finished, everybody helps clean up; it is a true family experience.

Besides the amazing food, our boys and girls enjoyed a live DJ, our own graduate Diego. He provided the party vibe, and several other graduates came to help serve food, clean up, and enjoy the evening with family members still in the program. Many of our graduates don’t have family members in the program anymore and simply came to spend time with their friends and the staff. It is great to see that the bond created between our students and the program is truly long lasting.

As always, Santa ended the night by giving out presents to all of our students and their younger siblings. We are very thankful to all of our friends and supporters who donated gifts; most of these boys and girls do not usually receive many presents, and the smiles on their faces tell us how much they truly appreciate even the smallest gesture of kindness. Thanks again to everyone who donated or helped out. When we say we can’t do it without you, we mean it; our program depends on your generosity! We can’t wait for next year!

This spring, a group of students at the Pathways-Senderos Center will develop a three-part documentary series on the experiences of teenagers in New Britain, Connecticut. They have been given complete autonomy to cultivate their ideas to truly capture the youth perspective. This project will provide a great opportunity for students to learn and acquire a variety of skills that they can apply to their academic pursuits, personal lives, and possibly their professional careers down the road. Our participants are engaging in all facets of the production process, including: planning, writing, filming, editing and promoting the project. They are making weekly visits to the ParaDYM Academy, which is located in downtown New Britain at the CCSU Institute for Technology and Business Development building. ParaDYM boasts a studio equipped with computers and an array of multimedia equipment that gives our students a glimpse into what it is like to actually produce different media platforms with the same equipment and software used by professionals in the film and music industry.

This is a collaborative project with ParaDYM, whose motto is “engaging education and innovation through digital youth media”. After meeting their Director, Duane Pierre, it was a no-brainer to have our students visit the studio and learn about the same media that they consume regularly. We all have our favorite film and music tastes, but it is important to realize that we all have the potential to create media as well. Students learn about videography, photography, music and audio production, graphic design, and more. It is hands-on learning that engages youth in hopes of teaching them how to express themselves in a variety of ways. ParaDYM provides the tools necessary for youth to create whatever they want. On our first group visit to the studio, students were shown video games, podcasts, and videos that were developed by high school students in the past year. It will be fascinating to see what our students come up with when their final project is complete.

By being a part of a group project, students are learning the value of teamwork, compromising and building on each other’s ideas in order to make a successful project. They are able to learn different skills that they can apply in the real world, making their ideas manifest into something tangible. Our students are learning the importance of planning and organizing through the pre-production process, mapping out the vision that they have for the project. Technology and media are a regular part of their lives and they are learning how to utilize it in a more sophisticated way that allows them to express their worldview. The final project will be online through platforms such as YouTube by this summer. Soon we can all watch and listen to what they have to say!

This newsletter is printed in color due to the generosity of Barile Printers, who covered a substantial part of the color-printing costs.

Part of our successful methodology involves creating a long-lasting bond between our participants and the program and staff. As a holistic program, we understand that recreation and leisure activities are important for children and oftentimes the most effective way to create that bond. One main reason participants stay with our program for the long term is that they enjoy being at the Center, and they enjoy the company of the other students and staff. Once they are comfortable at the Center, learning can more effectively take place.

One of our most popular recreational activities is going to the Haunted Graveyard at Lake Compounce. This has been an annual trip for many years now, and it is always a fun experience that creates long lasting shared memories among our boys and girls. We get to the park early and have easy access to all of the games, roller coasters and other rides. Later in the evening, we all walk through the Haunted Graveyard, where our young kids get easily frightened and our older kids act like they don’t. On the ride home, there’s always a huge debate over who was the most or least scared.

Other activities that establish bonds between our participants, and allow them to express their creativity, are the numerous art projects that we do throughout the year. In the past few months we have done several fun projects. For one project, students used acrylic paint to create images and designs on small canvases. For another project, they worked with our friend and volunteer Marsha on a Polaroid collage. She has a modern Polaroid camera and took individual pictures with all of the students, most of whom had never seen a Polaroid picture develop. A few students then helped her put all the pictures on a posterboard. Students and staff also created a multi-media collage representing all the different people and activities at the Center. This giant piece now hangs up on our wall in the main room.

Lastly, one of the most fun projects we did this winter was building (and eating!) gingerbread houses. This was a first time experience for most of our kids, and an activity most of the adults hadn’t partaken in for many years, so it was a good time for everyone. The students made some awesome creations using a wide variety of toppings. Most importantly, they were delicious!

Established in 1993, Greater New Britain Teen Pregnancy Prevention, Inc. (GNBTPP) is based onDr. Michael Carrera’s successful prevention model developed in Harlem, NY. The Carrera philosophy states “In order to create an environment wherepositive change can occur, it is necessary to influence multiple facets of young people’s lives over a continuous and prolonged period of time.”

Because academic success is the key to teenpregnancy prevention, the core of this programintegrates educational support with career/vocational preparation and family life education.

To accomplish its goals, GNBTPP has createda public-private partnership involving all of thecommunity’s key stakeholders that maximizes existing local resources.

Programming and participants at GNBTPP are evaluated annually by an independent social scientist to ensure that outcomes are measured accurately.
