Regional Library Karlovy Vary
There are at least sixteen reasons for visiting Regional Library Karlovy Vary...Our special services include:
• for the visually impaired there are 2.019 titles of sound books • for the deaf many of the lectures are interpreted into the Czech
sign language • Seniors can take part in Literary Seniors Club • A help service is offered to unemployed • for children there is a beautiful new children´s field equipped
with wooden components , etc.

For deaf and hearing impaired visitors
For several years already the Library has been providing Czech sign language courses for „the healthy public“ (since 2006). Last year four courses took place (48 participants incl. 5 librarians). In 2009 six courses have taken place (79 participants altogether). The lecturer of the course is Mr Mirek Plachý – the Chairman of the Deaf and Deaf-and-Dumb People´s Club in Karlovy Vary who cooperates and communicates very actively with the Library.
All services are free of charge. Special websites are available for deaf and hearing impaired visitors.

Courses and services for deaf visitors http://www.knihovna.kvary.cz/cs/pro-navstevniky/pro-neslysici55/ Bc. Michaela Kožíšková, email [email protected] There are some librarians who know basic sign language and others are
learning it. The Library had adopted the idea and named it „Visually and Hearing
Impaired People – Come and Join Us“. Several courses and events are organised in the library
• PC courses• Series of Lectures (e.g. in astronomy)• Outdoor Programmes like a Day in the Czech forest and other
excursions
www.entitlelll.eu
Evaluation and feedback
There is evidence that the users of the Department for the Disabled are satisfied with the services provided . This is proven by their repeated visits to events offered and their interest in the activities. As a result of questionnaire e.g. provided at the end of the computer course for the deaf we found that all eight participants (deaf) wanted to continue their education. The Library is now discussing another financial grant with the Bariéry Foundation to continue the course.
The same can be said about the interpretation of lectures in the Library – the repeated interest is a commitment for the Library to ensure the availability of more interesting interpreted events for the deaf. All information on services offered is also drawn by the disabled from the Library websites. When planning events (for the visually impaired, the deaf) partner organisations are consulted to discuss content and find out ideas that may be of interest . At end of the event the participants complete a questionnaire giving their opinions about the event and expressing their interest in continuing with the subject. These are analysed and used for planning of future events.

Central Public Library of VeriaMagic Boxes
www.entitlelll.eu
Central Public Library of Veria - Greece
The Magic Boxes, the renovated children’s area in Veria Central Public Library, is a place to meet, explore and acquire knowledge. It is a place where the library is being transformed into a laboratory for children to experiment and develop skills needed in the library of the future.
The main driving force behind Veria’s Library vision is a child's approach to knowledge. This favours thematic presentations that contain the element of surprise, discovery as well as continuing renewal. In this respect, the name ‘Magic’ aims to stress that the emotional and pleasurable aspects of experiencing creativity are central issues of the project and furthermore the terms ‘fun’, ‘wonder’ and ‘excitement’ need to be adopted in the vocabulary of the users of the new children area.
www.entitlelll.eu
Central Public Library of Veria - Greece
The “Box” (open or closed), is a determined space that aims to communicate with the environment or with other boxes; a box invites people to open it, to touch it or discourages them to come in contact with its contents. It is a space that offers shelter and safety but also encage.
A box helps people to arrange and store thoughts and objects; a box is a theme of knowledge. Hence the main target of this thematic approach is to empower children to discover the way to transit from one “box” to another, to create their own connections between different areas of knowledge and to explore continuously wider thematic spaces.
www.entitlelll.eu
Central Public Library of Veria - Greece
The very concept of the project is to bring together the combined elements of the “Magic Box” and create a children-centric environment that is open and accessible to all, is aesthetically children-friendly, addresses personalised learning requirements, provides the means for children to express their creativity and curiosity.
The renovation started in Oct.2008 and was made available to the public for evaluation in Dec.2008. The initial proposal was made to the Niarchos foundation in Oct.2006.
