The vision of St. Juliana Falconieri Catholic Community

is to live as a people of God with Christ at the center of our

lives through liturgy, faith formation

and community.

Our mission is to be a welcoming family dedicated to

proclaiming the gospel, celebrating the Sacraments,

educating, serving, and providing opportunity for all to enrich their faith.

THE PARISH AS ONE BODY “If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole body were hearing, where would the sense of smell be? But as it is, God placed the parts, each one of them, in the body as he intended… The eye cannot say to the hand, ‘I do not need you,’ nor again the head to the feet, ‘I do not need you.’ Indeed, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are all the more necessary . Now you are Christ’s body, and individually parts of it. “ (1 Cor. 12:17-25)

~ A NOTE FROM FR. MIKE PONTARELLI, O.S.M. ~

Two weeks ago our instruction on the sacraments left off just as we were beginning the Sacrament of the Sick. In this sacrament, see Jesus who is very much concerned with sick people. He cured many who were sick, even when those who were cured didn’t return any “Thank You Very Much!” He was there for the other, loving the many as he served them. That service said: “You no longer need to be alone (as those with leprosy were) and you don’t have to suffer pain or worry in distress as sick people do. The face of God is seen in a sick person, the healing of Jesus is experienced in the Church’s Pastoral Care of the Sick. Vatican II, in its mission toward liturgical reform, re-established the intention and practice of the early church. The sacrament is no longer understood as the “Last Rites” or “Final Anointing” (Extreme Unction) given to a baptized Catholic. It is not a sacrament for those who are only at the point of death. (The Rites of the Church)

The Sacrament of the Sick is the sacramental anointing for all those who are afflicted by serious illness or old age. The Instruction for the sacrament offers the following directives:

#97: “… It may be celebrated in the home, in a hospital or institution, or in church. #99: “The priest should ensure that the abuse of delaying the reception of the sacrament does not occur, and that the celebration takes place while the sick person is capable of active participation. … (It is) the intent of the conciliar reform that those needing the sacrament should seek it at the beginning of a serious illness. Because of its very nature as a sign, the sacrament of the anointing of the sick should be celebrated with members of the family and other representatives of the Christian community whenever this is possible. Then the sacrament is seen for what it is – a part of the prayer of the church and an encounter with the Lord.”

It is celebrated in a beautiful and rich way when a community is gathered. In this sacrament that community is often a gathering of family and friends. It is celebrated before a serious surgery or when a person is seriously ill. Elderly people may be anointed especially if they are growing weak with age although no serious illness is present. The prayerful words and anointing (on the forehead and hands) of the sacrament are both simple and grace-filled:

“Through this holy anointing may the Lord in his love and mercy help you

with the grace of the Holy Spirit.

May the Lord who frees you from sin save you and raise you up.”

There are options for prayer after the anointing. I especially like this one:

“Father in heaven, through this holy anointing, grant your servant comfort in his/her suffering.

When he/she is afraid, give him/her courage, when afflicted, give him/her patience, when dejected, afford him/her hope,

when alone assure him/her of the support of all your holy people.”

Two weeks ago the Second Collection was taken to benefit the mission the Servite Order staffs in South Africa. To date, June 22, 2016, your kindness totals $4,814.00. Fr Luke and I along with the Order internationally thank you so very much. Your generosity will benefit the Servites in South Africa. God bless you, each one!

JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY

June 26, 2016 Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Yet again in Ordinary Time, Jesus seems to demand extraordinary commitment. A would-be disciple enthusiastically volunteers to follow Jesus “wherever” (Luke 9:57). Jesus replies that “wherever” means “nowhere to rest his head” (9:58). To other candidates, Jesus brusquely denies reasonable requests to fulfill family obligations (9:59, 61), declaring that discipleship demands total com-mitment—now! But Jesus also demands that we not judge how others respond. When James and John volunteered to “call down fire from heaven” (9:54) to destroy an unwelcoming town, Jesus “turned and rebuked them” (9:55). All violence of any kind is completely unacceptable among Jesus’ disciples, a lesson this Jubilee Y ear of Mercy is teaching the Christian community once again. Paul’s challenge to the Galatians and us reinforces Jesus’ decisive command to James and John that they express their com-mitment to him through compassion for others. We must abandon the violence of “biting and devouring one another” (Galatians 5:15), choosing instead to “serve one another through love” (5:13). —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

PENNIES FROM HEAVEN

Start saving your pennies and other loose coins now for the Pennies From Heaven Collection which will take place on Aug. 27 & 28. Most parishes in the Orange Diocese have this fund raiser to help fund the 3 Life Centers, the 6 Birth Choice Obria health clinics and the homes for pregnant moth-

ers in need in Orange County. They rely on this collection for their annual operation costs. Encourage your children too, to save their change during the summer months to help these un-born babies live. The parish Respect Life Group will be hand-ing out baby bottles after Masses on August 13 & 14 to take home and fill with these coins. Then return the bottles on August 27 & 28. You can also insert paper money or checks in the bottles for this collection. We like the light weight kind of money.

R.C.I.A. (Rite of Chr istian Initiation of Adults) classes for 2016-17 begin the end of August...at the end of the summer.

Please spend some time this summer reconnecting with Jesus. Pray everyday with purpose. Strive to be an intentional disci-ple of His. If you or someone you know is searching for a way to connect with our faith and are interested in being bap-tized in the Catholic Church or have not completed all Sacra-ments of Initiation (Eucharist and Confirmation) and wish to do so, please call our Parish Office at 714-879-1965 and ask to speak with a RCIA Team Member. We are gathering a list of names and interviewing candidates now for the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) 2016-17 sessions which will begin the end of August. We look forward to talking with you and assisting in your discernment.
