We are thrilled to share the first edition of the newly reformed Acorn Magazine.This is a unique magazine, written and compiled entirely by Priestlands studentsfrom Years 7-10. Each student has chosen an area that they are passionate about then createdand designed their own pages. Meeting every Wednesday lunchtime; using afantastic piece of software, they've put together this first edition in just a fewweeks. Special thanks to Miss Squibb for letting us use her room each week. Ouraim is to publish an edition of the Acorn every half term. We are always looking for new people to contribute articles so why not join us? Our inaugural issue has a festive, wintry theme and we hope you enjoy the funfeatures included inside!

HEAD GIRL &HEAD BOY

Chloe Treacey, Head Girl has joined innumerous sporting opportunities during hertime at Priestlands including; Captain of theSchool netball team and playing rugby andrepresenting the school in athletics. Her school trip highlights include the Historytrip to France seeing the trenches andappearing in the Trapdoor theatre productionAlice in Wonderland. Being Head Girl has helped improve Chloe'sconfidence with lots of public speakingopportunities and the chance to make adifference.

Tom Renshaw, Head Boy is a talentedmusician, performing at the Royal AlbertHall playing the violin. He has also enjoyedthe Duke of Edinburgh Awards, publicspeaking competitions at Priestlands. Some school highlights include the Icelandtrip in Year 9 seeing the Skogafosswaterfall, Y10 Summer Kenya trip helpingto build schools and teach children. As Head Boy, Tom has enjoyed listening tostudents and putting forward the changesthey want to see at Priestlands.

Some game designers have been busy trying tomake their games popular again by giving bigupdates to their games.

Fortnite has had the biggest update, a blackhole opened and destroyed the Fortniteisland. Now there is a brand new map with afew old places and the game has started tobecome an even more popular game thanbefore this update.

The Ingredients250g icing sugar1 egg white, beaten3-5 drops of peppermint essence

15 chocolate sweets ( to taste)

The Method 1. Sieve the icing sugar into alarge bowl and add the eggwhite a little at a time. Stopadding egg white when it formsa soft dough.2. Add 3-5 drops of peppermintessence and if it isn't mintyenough, add a couple moredrops.3. Roll into 15 balls and flattento make the main head shape.add a nose, eyes and ears andleave them to dry for 3-4 hoursor overnight. Eat within amonth.

The IngredientsVegetable oil400g of dark chocolateLolly sticksIce lolly mould 3 whole cardamom pods, husks removedand seeds ground to a powder2 tsp unwaxed orange or tangerine finelyzested2 tsp candied peel, finely chopped pinchof freshly grated nutmeg4 squares white chocolate, finely gratedor shaved1 tsp freeze-dried raspberries¼whole star anise finely ground

The Method 1. Lightly oil the ice lolly moulds. Melt thechocolate in short, sharp bursts in amicrowave. Put the spoons or lolly sticksinto the holes of the lolly mould.2. Divide chocolate into four bowls. Nowadd the different flavours and pour intomoulds.3. Chill the moulds in the fridge for atleast 2-3 hrs. When the chocolate has completely set, ease the stirrers outof the moulds, wrap each spoon in cellophane and secure with string.Keep cool until you need them.

Chocolate Stirrers

25 mini candy canes4 cups chocolate chips (700 g)1/2 teaspoon peppermint extract 3 cups white chocolate chips (525 g)

The Ingredients

Place the mini candy canes in a ziptop bag and use a rolling pin tocrush them into small chunks.Transfer to a medium bowl. In a separate medium bowl, stirthe peppermint extract into themelted chocolate chips. Pour ontoparchment paper-lined bakingsheet and spread evenly with aspatula. Freeze for five minutes.Take the pan out of the freezer andpour the melted white chocolateover the chocolate, spreadingevenly with a spatula. Sprinkle the crushed mini candycanes over the white chocolate. Freeze for 1 hour. Remove the bark from the fridge and break into pieces. Enjoy!
