NOTE FROM THE GRAND KNIGHT Worthy Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

I hope that your Holidays were festive and joyous and that the New Year has found you all well and refreshed -as we all

have a Busy next few months with the upcoming Mardi Gras Dinner, Lenten meals and the St.

Patrick Dinner that will be in March- Plus a Blood drive held in the Hall on February 24th.

What will be needed are a “front of the house” Chairman from the Council & Chairperson from the Auxiliary that

would also serve as a direct Liaison to the Ladies for the dinners. This can be a filled by a husband and wife team

(if so desired) and you would be in charge of Tickets sales and hall set ups for dinners.

December 1st the Annual State Midyear meeting was held at Markich Hall.

December 2nd and third we had our Button Drive in the Plaza - I couldn’t make the one on Saturday due to my being at the Mid-Year

Meeting that day but attended the Sunday Masses all day. Besides getting really cold- the ending results of the drive were even colder. The

worst the Council has seen in a while, due in part to low Council participation and tighter purse strings. Hopefully in future drives this will

improve.

December 7th was the Business meeting and we had a guest speaker- Brother Pieter Scholte - a 30 year Knight, also a PGK and FDD of Utah

currently serving as a member of the St. Francis Assisi Council 13456. He is a Knight Commander with Star in the

Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem. Brother Pieter addressed the Council about the strife the

Christians are facing currently in the Middle East and the movie Open Bethlehem.

December 8th the Ladies had their Christmas Party at the Siena Bistro which was well attended. Everyone present

had a good time with good food and good fellowship. A BIGGGG thank you goes out to the Ladies.

On December 9th we set up the kitchen and hall for the Breakfast with St. Nick that was held on Dec 10th. There

was a good turnout from the Council and the Ladies and the attendees from the Parish. I’d like to give Thanks to

everyone who helped make this successful. Big thanks to Brother Afton Kidd who again served as St. Nick. Thanks again, Afton!

Also a big thank you to Jessica from the Office who was also there on Saturday to check and fingerprint any who were due to be rechecked

or had not yet been done. Folks, this is a big to-do with the Diocese. They want ALL VOULNTEERS to get this done every 5years. All are

asked if you haven’t had this done yet to please make an appointment with Jessica in the Office. As it stands from the Diocese no one can

serve as a volunteer in any parish/organization until this is done, so please check into it.

At the last meeting of the O’ Callahan Assembly it was decided to forgo their business meeting and instead to have their Christmas Party at

New York Pizza and Pasta on December 16th, which was well attended by SK’s and Ladies. The CWV was also having their Party on Dec

8th so there was a lot of celebrating in December to say the least.

Hope you all have a Happy, Healthy and Blessed 2018!!

May God Bless and be with each and every one of you this New Year !

Yours in Christ, Ray Foster Grand Knight Council 10442

CONGRATULATIONS ARE IN ORDER….. To our Council and PGK Bill Koss, who recently received the Star Council Award for the 2016-2017 year during his term. Star Council is a very special leadership award; given to a Council that meets the Criteria of 3 different categories – service, membership growth, and Quota for insurance members. In order to earn the Star Council Award, a council must qualify for the Father McGivney, Founder’s, and Columbian Awards. The Columbian Award is awarded for Council conducting at least four programs in the major Service Program categories: Church, Community, Council, Family, Culture of Life, and Youth. The Founders and Father McGivney Awards are for insurance member quota and membership growth, respectively. Congrats to PGK Bill, who will be first to tell you he had plenty of help, and will always be grateful for all of it. But it was under his quiet, worthy, effective and excellent leadership that this great achievement was accomplished. Here are some pics of Bill receiving the award from GK Ray :

PRAYER FOR THE CANONIZATION OF FATHER MCGIVNEY Founder of the Knights of Columbus in 1882

God, our Father, protector of the poor and defender of the widow and orphan, you called your priest Father Michael J. McGivney, to be an apostle of Christian family life and the lead the young to the generous service of their neighbor. Through the example of his life and virtue may we follow your Son Jesus Christ more closely, fulfilling his commandment of charity and building up his Body which is the Church. Let the inspiration of your servant prompt us to greater confidence in your love so that we may continue his work of caring for the needy and the outcast. We humbly ask that you glorify your venerable servant Father Michael J McGivney on earth according to the design of Your Holy will. Through his intercession, grant the favor I now present (make your request) Through Christ our Lord. Amen

HELP WANTED

Our Council is in urgent need of two Brothers interested in learning and assuming some of the cooking

and kitchen management responsibilities for our events. If you have cooking experience, or just have an

interest in learning more about cooking, this is an opportunity for you to serve us and your Parish. You will

work alongside our current cook and learn our systems with the intent that you would

assist with food planning, food purchasing, food prep, and health code compliance. The

long term plan would be that you would alternate with the others and take over an event

and make it your own. Last update was that Brother Danny Iliscupidez has stepped up and

become a “regular” great helper in the prep/cooking part of the kitchen, which we totally

appreciate. We still need someone to learn/assist/backup PGK Chuck in the buying of the supplies and

getting them to the kitchen. Most are purchases at either Restaurant Depot or Smart and Final, or

wherever has the best prices at the time of what we need for the Breakfast/Dinner in question.

The scope and breadth of our activities has gotten way too much for one individual to manage. If you are

interested in serving the Knights in this capacity, contact Fred Smith, worthy Financial Secretary, via phone

or text at 509-499-1622 or email him at [email protected]. He will facilitate a meeting so that

you can learn more before committing. Please prayerfully consider this call for help.

A RENEWAL OF THE FAMILY 12/1/2017

by Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson

IN FOCUSING ON “BUILDING THE DOMESTIC CHURCH,” THE ORDER HELPS CATHOLIC FAMILIES

TO FULFILL THEIR MISSION

THIS MONTH, we fix our gaze on the Holy Family and are able to see how, in the words of the Second Vatican Council, “authentic married love is caught up into divine love” (Gaudium et Spes, 48). In his apostolic exhortation Amoris Laetitia, Pope Francis reminds us that the Holy Family exudes the beauty of family life (65). He then recalls the words of Pope Paul VI that the Holy Family “illuminates the principle which gives shape to every family” (66). During the past several years, the Knights of Columbus has begun a number of important initiatives to help our families draw closer to the Holy Family and, in this way, to get “caught up into divine love.” One of our most important initiatives is our program of family consecration to the Holy Family.

In his apostolic exhortation Familiaris Consortio, St. John Paul II wrote, “The family has the mission to guard, reveal and communicate love” (17). He went on to say, “Man cannot live without love. He remains a being that is incomprehensible for himself, his life is senseless, if love is not revealed to him, if he does not encounter love, if he does not experience it and make it his own, if he does not participate intimately in it” (18). This task is revealed in an intense and

intimate way to the members of the family — both as individuals and as a community. Pope Francis states that in fulfilling its mission, “every family, despite its weaknesses, can become a light in the darkness of the world” (Amoris Laetitia, 66).

We might add that the layman is also called to convert that part of the world which is uniquely entrusted to him: his marriage and his family. Seen in this light, the Order’s program of family consecration to the Holy Family will help many of our members to take an important step in fulfilling their responsibility as husbands and fathers to consecrate their “part of the world” to God. By understanding the Christian family as a domestic church, the Order’s initiative to strengthen Catholic family life calls attention to the family’s identity and mission.

Much can be said about the family as a domestic church. (These duties also apply to the domestic church.) The family has the duty to evangelize, to worship and to perform acts of charity. In order to help more brother Knights take up their leadership role within their families — to help transmit the faith to their children and lead them in worship and a commitment to Christian charity — we have made available the new guide to fostering masculine spirituality, Into the Breach.

Pope Francis also tells us in Amoris Laetitia that “the Church is a family of families, constantly enriched by the lives of all those domestic churches.”

With this in mind, we unite all of our family programs in the initiative Building the Domestic Church While Strengthening Our Parish. In this way, all of our Knights of Columbus families can be at the service of the Church in greater ways and help to lead a renewal of both family and parish life.
